I never had an issue with him at vandy. he definitely looked uncomfortable and out of place on Pitt's bench...
good luck to him I say.

I've worked every day I wasn't in school since I was 15, have had some decent paying jobs, and after more than 40 years my Social Security account indicates I haven't totaled in all my labor even half of what Stallings will get to walk away from a job in which he failed miserably.

He should feel sorry for me, not the other way around.

of course the other side of the coin is the kid taking out a student loan to pay for his tuition, student fees and whatever else they tack on.

You could say the athletics programs cover that cost but really, its poor management to be in the position where your decision as an AD results in a $10m loss to the University. That's about $300 per student

How many people survive a mutli-million dollar mistake? In colleges, it happens 20-30 time a year with the major sports

That number gets much larger when you take into consideration revenue lost due to poor performance of an athletic program.

He's obviously a good coach (maybe not as good as I thought). But seems like this was a classic bad fit between coach and program.

I can't feel sorry for anybody with a 10 million dollar buyout , that alone makes him comfortable the rest of his life if he invests it right. If a schools willing to pay it I don't feel sorry for them either.

I never worry about coaches getting fired. That's typically where they make the most money. I'm concerned when people lose their income potential. For coaches however it's like getting a $10 million dollar bonus.

It’s more the assistants and their families who really get their lives disrupted. And on a much larger scale in football.

He doesn't even have to invest it at his age. I could live like a king on that much for the rest of my life.

$10 million not to coach. To go away. To leave.

But all that money involved would ruin the game if players had it. Just like Tubby Smith can leave Texas Tech for more money and prestige, but it's poaching and terrible if a player transfers to a better program or opportunity.

Honest to God, there's a real live news story about Bam Adebayo maybe getting a $30 dinner at the Melting Pot. That's a scandal, but Kevin Stallings, with his mediocre resume` is freely given 7 figures *not* to do his job anymore. And some people don't see a problem with that.

That just shows how clueless Bilas is. This was a very unpopular hire and for good reason. Pitt doesn't recruit the same kind of kids Vanderbilt does. The entire culture is different.

What about a Cam Johnson transferring out to UNC. May have lost his job anyway but Pitt would have been a lot better.

Not sure why people are worrying about his buyout. The school contracted him and they're the ones at fault. Have to think there's some issues other than a really bad year on the court.

Pitt job is not that attractive now that they are in the ACC.

i think most people are just blown away at the fact that a coach can get this much money for failure. As someone stated, "It is like winning the lottery."

Agree. I think there is more to this than just losing games.

Just put the money in an annuity that pays 5%. He would get $500k/yr without touching the principal. Not to mention that he has been paid well for several years and should have other money saved and invested.

Something tells me that the crazy money involved in nearly all levels of sports is not sustainable.

That shows the amount of money College basketball generates, all my life I have not been rewarded for overachieving but definitely been docked for not delivering a acceptable product. I can't imagine why anyone would give out contracts like that to unproven coaches, if you take a Calipari, K, Williams, Self or very few others that have consistently performed at the top of their profession then I can see locking in monster deals, but for all others they need to be paid on performance and docked when not performing and no buyouts. I have no agenda against any of these others but Tubby, Stallings and all of these middle of the pack guys getting monster deals just defies economic logic to me.

Cam Johnson leaves Pitt, AD who hired Stallings left for Oregon St and Pitt goes 0-fer in the ACC. It’s a huge buyout but the new AD has no allegiance to Stallings and is staring at a lot of empty seats in the arena.

I can’t stand Stallings; he’s such a whiner
Plus didn’t he have some questionable press conferences?

Great article on why Stallings failed so miserably. And, to think, Bilas thought he was a great hire![roll]

https://sports.yahoo.com/kevin-stallings-wrong-choice-pittsburgh-moment-hired-162342977.html

Seldom has a coaching hire been more clearly bungled from the get-go than Pittsburgh’s decision to pluck Stallings from Vanderbilt two years ago. Pittsburgh erred every step of the way, from lowering Jamie Dixon’s buyout to encourage him to leave, to needlessly raising expectations for the hire with a fruitless run at Sean Miller, to ultimately hiring a candidate whose previous school was happy to see him go.

Personally, since the FBI will chase anything these days, I feel someone should look into these deals. Someone in charge that is making these deals is receiving something when it falls apart. Tubby's huge buyouts, Stallings getting 10 million to leave. Something is off.
