Anybody else hearing he will be fired today?
Several UL people are saying today is the day.

Another Cal assistant not exactly holding his own.

How many does that make and how are the other former assistants doing?

I thought he'd be fired yesterday.

That being said, he's shown how poor of a coach he is. We should not put him back on staff to languish here.

If they ditch Payne today, it might make Cal want to pour it on when we play them. He'll hold back if Payne is still there, but he'll have no reason to without him.
I don't think they want him coaching against UK, I think they want him gone and hope that fuels a little fire in the players or something. I know their roster isn't great, but it's not a roster that should be losing the games they're losing. They have a few decent players who could compete with the right coaching and attitude.

When I look at their roster, Clark, White, Huntley-Hatfield, and Traynor remind me of a poor man’s version of Askew, Boston, E. J., and Skal.

I just do not understand it, a HOF Coach and every headcoach tied to him flames out.

If they fire Payne before our game Cal will have no reason not to run up score.

You can do the same with Coach K...
How's the Bill Self coaching tree?
What about Roy Williams?
Should we look at the Tom Izzo coaching tree?

Point being, hating Cal aside, most assistant coaches are RECRUITERS first and foremost. It didn't used to be like that. Assistant coaches HISTORICALLY had specific coaching roles first and foremost. But now, it's all about recruiting. So when it comes to being a head coach, that might have some clout and street cred, but they just simply aren't the basketball minds that their predecessors were

There are numerous examples of this but you don’t underestand?

Coach K: Mike Brey, Jeff Capel, Jon Scheyer.

Most elite coaches don’t have strong coaching trees. Phog Allen and Larry Brown are notable exceptions.
I always thought Mike Brey was solid at ND. Not like he got much support up there

Hoping he makes it until after the UK game. With as bad as they are under Payne, we'll be them by 50 and that's with Cal trying to call off the dogs.
Cal will undoubtedly have sympathy for Payne which doesn't bold well in a rivalry game. No offense to Kenny Payne but I hope they cut ties before we play UL so there's no additional emotions.

Said in another post, KP is a great assistant.

People generally like him. Specifically, I think young men really like him which is important in coaching. That's why he was a coveted assistant, college and pro.

He's probably not a HC, not many people are though.

I think the NBA probably suits him. Would look for him to end up back in the league considering he recruited, developed, and has some sort of familiarity/relationship with at least a player or two on every roster it seems like.

How many of these other coaches are shooting a zero, zip, nada.

I feel for Payne

I didn't understand why Louisville wanted him and I didn't understand why they thought his contributions to the UK program, while important, qualified him to run a program being vacated by Pitino (yes, I know Mack was in between).

Maybe Louisville was desperate and realized the names they wanted, they couldn't get

all that said

I cringe when fans on here think someone with similar experience, just because they have some connection to the program should be considered

Kenny Payne wouldn't have been contacted if he had no connection to Louisviile, yet that connection for whatever reason, overrode all the logic that said he wasn't qualified.

IMO, Kenny Payne is a heck of an assistant coach. and thats it. some people arent just cut out to be a head coach. he was always the good cop here, so when calapari ripped some players rear for screwing up. he would be the 1st coach to soothe his feeling sand calm the player down. nothing against kenny payne. i would like to see him back here as an assistant, because hes a top notch recruiter. however i believe he will go back to the pros in some role.

Kenny Payne thread used to take a shot at Cal. No matter the topic they find a way.

It’s the same people who seemingly hate Cal more than they love UK.

I swear some of these people would rather the Cats lose so they can be “right” online about Cal instead of being happy UK won. And this is coming from someone who’s been frustrated with Cal since the 9 win season.

it doesn't look like we missed much on recruiting this year without Kenny. I'm not here to dog Kenny, I just don't know that its imperative that he is back at Kentucky. I wish him well, if Cal wants him back, that's fine but I'm not sure its necessary at all
