5 o'clock on a Friday and Kenny Payne still has a job.

At this point, is anyone in charge at UofL?

I bet Kenny checks this thread every 5-10 minutes for possible updates.

This seems more like wishful thinking from Louisville fans thinking about the Kentucky game coming up and how bad it could be.
If Payne is not there for the beatdown, it gives them some psychological hope for the future.

KP reminds me of Joker Phillips in football. I believe if he's let go during the season it will be just before the Kentucky game. The players will rally around the new coach for a game or two, extra excitement for the Kentucky game too.

This is the best comparison.

Joker was an alum and was thought to be a damn good OC. But, he was in over his head and it was obvious fairly quickly. Payne is the basketball equivalent.

A UL fan suggested Bob Huggins as a possible replacement for Payne

that's an interesting choice

clearly some baggage
clearly a guy that can get that team above .500
probably a short term solution, but a given their options, a real coach that can be had for less than $2m a year with no serious buyout

There were more people at the UL graduation last night than a basketball game. Even the commencement speaker took a jab at their basketball program. That was a shock more than the attendance.

I think Kenny finally broke Louisville fans. On their site they're repeatedly saying "phuck Kenny and phuck Knox" and hoping Hierd says no to Knox's visit because this is all a UK ploy to make them believe they have a chance with him even though Kenny is about to be fired and his brother played at UK. It's basically a conspiracy involving Payne, the Knox family, and Cal and they don't want their AD to fall for it!

I'm not sure I've ever seen fans of a school actively say "phuck that big time recruit" and "we don't want him to visit" because they're so consumed with their rival. I mean, sure...we'll take him if Louisville fans are on social media cursing the young man out and pretending he's involved in some wide angled sports conspiracy.

Lots of parallels. Both great right-hand guys, lead assistants, recruiters, developers.

Both thrown to the wolves I think a bit too early which isn't totally their fault. Neither one had ever been an HC before. I've said for years there is a lot of fault to be put on the UK brass. The plan should not have been HCIW for Joker, it should have been behind doors "hey Joker go be an OC and learn at a bigger winning program for a few years or go be a HC at G5 win a bowl or two and we'll holler at ya."

Joker has always been able to get a job essentially wherever he wants as an assistant. Currently the AHC at a 9-3 NC ST who could very easily be the surprise UL type of team next year playing in the ACC title game. Lost to cards by 3 points this year or we would have seen him on the sidelines v FSU.

Same goes for KP. Has never been an HC. He's coached at like 2 places. Most of his career has been at UK under Cal where a lot of things can be masked. Shame on UL for thinking he was going to be able to save that mess any sooner than 4-5 years. It's a total rebuild.

KP will have offers the second UL cans him, probably already has some people reaching out. Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up back in Lexington.

Head coaches in college need to be arrogant, vain, and somewhat volatile (Wooden an exception). Kenny simply lacks those qualities.

I would still take him back as a developer of the big man.
