And we likely never will, as the algorithm is proprietary. Like McDonalds special sauce and KFC's 11 herbs and spices.I’ll never figure it out,
Kenpom also heavily values experience. Next season we’ll be one of the most experienced teams in america. We could possibly enter the year as a top 15 kenpom team due to that. And we likely never will, as the algorithm is proprietary. Like McDonalds special sauce and KFC's 11 herbs and spices.
However, what Pomeroy does emphasize (and so will I) is that the algorithm is FORWARD-LOOKING. It is meant to be predictive - to rank the relative strengths of the 353 D1 teams RIGHT NOW. It is not meant to assess the team's overall body of work.
How can analytics possibly include head to head? The computer is ranking 353 teams using whatever metrics is uses, and comes up with a composite score for each. If Team A's composite score is higher than Team B's, then Team A will be rated higher, regardless of how the two teams fared head to head. It’s odd when the analytics ignore head to head.
