I’ll never figure it out,
And we likely never will, as the algorithm is proprietary. Like McDonalds special sauce and KFC's 11 herbs and spices.

However, what Pomeroy does emphasize (and so will I) is that the algorithm is FORWARD-LOOKING. It is meant to be predictive - to rank the relative strengths of the 353 D1 teams RIGHT NOW. It is not meant to assess the team's overall body of work.

Kenpom also heavily values experience. Next season we’ll be one of the most experienced teams in america. We could possibly enter the year as a top 15 kenpom team due to that.

It’s odd when the analytics ignore head to head.
How can analytics possibly include head to head? The computer is ranking 353 teams using whatever metrics is uses, and comes up with a composite score for each. If Team A's composite score is higher than Team B's, then Team A will be rated higher, regardless of how the two teams fared head to head.

Now if you feel that subjective human beings (like those on the Selection Committee) should consider head to head, then I'd agree with you. However, they don't, at least not officially.

Kenpom is effective in comparing you versus everyone else not necessarily head to head. It doesn’t make any assumptions if you’ve played each other and is effective to predict how two teams might do playing the same schedule.

Purdue kicked the crap out of Iowa, Virginia, and Michigan State (all 29+ point wins). This floats their efficiency.

Ken Pom appears on the team sheet as only a number. Its really such a minor part of the selection process
