Iowa offense won this game. Defense hasn't been the same for a few seasons now. Just too much turnover. Holes in all 3 levels this year. Lacked star power or difference makers.

The D will be green next year but I think there is potential for more star power next season with guys like Entringer, Lutmer, Buffington, Epenesa, and maybe a few guys like Godfrey and Watson.

On Offense Iowa has plenty of potential studs. I just hope lack of a QB doesn't bring it all down.

It looked to me that we went super conservative on defense.

We did awesome in the 1st half.

I was proud of the offense today.
This game from the defense looked a lot like the second half vs USC.

The front four simply couldn't get any pressure and the linebackers couldn't cover.
The only difference was the offense produced points.
It really was another second half collapse and mystifying why PP didn't blitz as much?
That said...Iowa's front seven aren't terribly athletic.

And the defense this year was dreadful creating turnovers. If I read the stats correctly, they only had 11 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries total in 13 games.
That ain't good.

Four sacks the first half and Vandy had 8 yards rushing. Pass rushers looked athletic

Vandy made good adjustments at half. They cleaned up their pass protection and went for the deep ball. They gave up on the run game, and kept the ball in Pavia’s hands to move the ball. On D, they started loading the box on us, but Grono had a great passing day to loosen up the box down the stretch. Vandy’s adjustments were good, but we were able to adapt just enough to hang on. It was a good chess match.

There’s a reason the guy was the Heisman trophy runner up. In the first half you could tell he had a lot of arm talent but was getting rushed. In the second half we didn’t get as much pressure and they also decided to go deep a lot where his arm talent was able to shine. He put some perfect throws right on the money that not a lot of college QBs can do. The defense played well, not amazing, but well.

For crying out loud people. Vandy has a really good offense. They averaged almost 40 points per game this year. Iowa‘s D was solid and great in first half.

Today’s game was played in almost perfect weather conditions. I think this helped both offenses a little as well.

Can you people ever be happy? Please tell us what kind of Iowa win would do it!

Vandy came in here mad they weren’t in the playoff, they expected to blow out the Hawks.

Iowa early on drove at will on Vandy D, should have been 21-3 if not for dropping td pass. they couldn’t stop the offense, and they knew it. That’s why they had to open up in the 2nd half just to try keeping up.

Did anyone here really believe Vandy would come back and win once the 4 quarter started?

4 sacks first half, zero 2nd half and I don't remember one holding call on Vandy in the 2nd half. What does everyone think the Vandy Oline coach told his team? My guess is keep them off our QB, I don't care if you get called for holding. Vandy had at least 9 penalties accepted by Iowa, it could have easily been over a dozen.

the 11 on defense under any other DC probably would've got 50-ed today by vanderbilt
need to get 1-2 elite disrupters (could be anywhere dl, lb, secondary)...maybe they will emerge next year

The 2nd half against USC is exactly what it reminded me of too, but maybe worse. It wasn’t a matter of if they were going to score, but how quickly.

Yeah, I did think it was a possibility.

All they needed was to get one stop on our Offense to get back into the game at the end.

Knowing that we needed to match them TD for TD in the 4th was not exactly comfortable/ sure win kind of stuff.

I’m always happy with any win.

But, I certainly would have preferred that after we scored the first TD of the second half, we would have put the game away.

Instead, we gave up a bomb for a TD(very unlike our D). And the way their O dominated our D in the 2nd half was cause for concern.

Thankfully, the Offense took their turn saving the day!

Our d-backs are not great. Hopefully will get at least one starter level in portal. Sorry to offend, but Hall is f’en horrible.

I don't have the stats in front of me, but this defense gave up some really fast scoring drives and some huge pass plays this season.
If I remember the pbp guys on TV, I thought they said Vandy had three touchdown drives of less than three minutes.

I guess if you want to paint something positive to that, Vandy's defense didn't get much rest before having to go back on the field.

That was part of the concern, how quickly we were letting them score.

If they had gotten a stop or two, they might’ve gotten an ungodly amount of Offensive possessions with how quickly they were scoring. Fortunately our Offense was able to drive to burn clock and score to keep the lead.

We had no one that could run with #6 though, that became very apparent.

Kakert stating to Nwampa that they were able to keep Pavia in check made me chuckle...if 347 yards is keeping a QB in check than I guess 330 yards is shutting a QB down. For the record though, I'm beyond elated that we beat Vanderbilt.

I didn't like Nwampa's hips in the very first All America game I saw him in, and he still is average at best in pass coverage. I think he can play in the NFL on a team that has a spot for a hybrid LB/Safety, but he's not an NFL safety.

Needs to ditch the union card on D. Running Harrel and Montgomery out there all season cost us. They just aren’t B10 caliber.

Hall might be one of the most bi-polar players I’ve ever seen at Iowa. Looks great for a few games and then absolutely awful for a game.

There were at least three blatant holds that were not called on Vanderbuilt.

I've said this a million times. I'm sure Harrell is a great guy and I'm sure a great teammate. I'm glad he wanted to be a Hawk. From day one it was obvious the speed of the game was too much.

Montgomery will absolutely be here to stay at MLB because of what you said. I feel he is an upgrade from Harrell but too small and still a step slow. I keep hearing we have all these studs waiting in the wings for their turn. I sure hope we get to see it.

I don't disagree. I still am glad he became a Hawk and wish he was playing in this spot the last 3 years.
Yeah, he's good, I just don't think he totally lived up to the hype though. Very good player still and will be missed.

Our CBs couldn’t keep up with the WR. To be fair Pavia extended several plays where he was almost sacked. Not running in a touchdown and throwing the pick continued to give them hope. Had we been up 20 plus they may have thrown in the towel. They also stopped running the ball because they lost their center.

Which was exactly the point I was trying to make. The Iowa offense stepped up and ran clock and kept scoring, making a comeback unlikely. Also, the Vandy coach going for on 4th and 3, didn’t hurt us either.

I don’t know how that gets missed. It’s a rather large man moving before the rest of the line.

Looked pretty obvious to me.
The bone headed punter has got to be the strangest thing I have seen. I think it was right after a sack and it was like 4th and 20+. He took off like he was going for the marker and there was no way he was going to get there. And then he pulled up and kicked and I thought WTF was that? clearly over the line of scrimmage. We scored on the next play on the wig& pen. They had a lot of offsides penalties too. Total lack of discipline.
