That’s actually pretty disappointing to watch. The crowds were epic. I used to really look forward to basketball season, Still do but am inevitably let down.

I was a student 2002-2005 and as terrible as the Croom years were in football...Basketball and Baseball were just as amazing. The Hump was about as much fun as you could have at a sporting event. And we had some epic grilling's at The Dude. Good gracious to be young and free again.

There is a much better basketball coach doing color commentary on our radio broadcasts.

Its funny to see these videos, because after last night, I’m getting a de ja vu feeling that this could be Howland’s 2011-2012 team equivalent (sans a fight). Good amount of talent including a likely 1st round NBA pick, but can’t seem to win. I want this program to succeed, but last night watching a mediocre alabama team run circles around MSU on BOTH sides was disconcerting.

Probably maroon colored glasses, but If someone told me today that Stans is our coach in 2020-2021, I’d be OK with it.

Granted we suck but honestly all of college basketball has gotten tough to watch. I can't quite put my finger on why but the games are just not as entertaining as they used to be. I am sure early NBA entry plays a huge role but it seems to go deeper than that. It is just not a good product overall.

I just don’t care anymore and it’s for several reasons. College basketball officiating is just so bad I don’t care to watch. Howland used to be a really good coach and now I think he’s just a mediocre coach that recruits well.

Yall should have been at the one back in the early 90s where we beat LSU to claim the first SEC title since Babe McCarthy. The only athletic event I have ever been to that equaled it as far as atmoshpere and sheer insanity from a MSU crowd, from build up to start to finish to afterward was Auburn football in 2014.

Thanks for that. There are a lot of State fans out there that like to act like it was all downhill after ‘04 for some reason, but there were a lot of special moments between then and the Sidney saga.

The other takeaway for me is that it’s definitely not just the Hump that has lost its atmosphere. Aside from Rupp and maybe one or two others, the atmosphere in SEC arenas is nothing like it was in those days. I can still feel in my veins just how much I hated some of those SEC west teams back in the day

I was at that Bama game...

That was one of the best endings to a game I remember. The heartbreak of losing to Kentucky on a possession arrow with Dicky V calling the game was the opposite.

That was a great game! Cameron Burns and Greg Carter doing work all season that year! Richard ended up coach of the year and got to coach an SEC all star team that summer. They came and practiced at State for a week or two. Got to meet Shaq and see him tear a goal down at the Commons basketball court when they were goofing around during downtime.

It's been eight years since we fired Stansbury for not winning enough, and we still haven't recovered. We just fired a football coach after two seasons and 14 wins, and our fans don't realize we're in danger of seeing the same thing in football.

Yep, 05 grad here too. Those games were so good that it made football bearable (and that is saying a lot!!). Good times in the Hump!!

When #1 UK came to town in 2011 (I think) and we lost in double or triple OT on a bunch of BS, I waited outside the Hump from about 10am to tip off at 8pm that night.

This was the John Wall UK team.

Yes, different times. These days, every game is televised or on SECN+. If the team is mediocre it’s going to be hard to get fans to go to the trouble of going to the games. It’s not just basketball either and it’s not just MSU.

I was at the Bama game as well. My girlfriend (now wife) asked if we were going to leave and I told her we drove all the way over here, we were staying. Glad we did.

Stand was great for MSU at that time. Y’all were stupid for wanting and eventually getting rid of him. I was never on board with that, because I knew how bad it could be. I loved Stansbury as our coach and wanted him to have time to right the Sidney debacle. If I’m not mistaken for the most part of Stand tenure, he did all that good without a practice facility ect

Just watching today where 9-7 Purdue had full house and beat number 3 Michigan’s State. Also saw Minnesota at 9-7 had full house and beat number 18 Michigan.
how can we NOT get better crowds to the games these days? The students just aren’t into it anymore and so many of us make excuses not to go. I remember from elementary in mid 70’s to high school in 80’s my dad would pick me up after school on Wednesday at times and drive to Starkville for 7:00 game then I would sleep on the way home and get back before midnight.

Too many of us are just too busy and don’t make the sacrifice to go to games.

Ikd maybe it was a mistake to fire him, but we made a terrible hire that didn’t even give MSU basketball a chance. Rick Ray was basically an unknown head coach who had no business being a head coach for a P5 team. Basically killed the program before game 1 even happened. We are still suffering from that hire 8 years later. We could have easily done better then that. My goodness.

The real mistake was allowing THE booster to make us fire Richard Williams.

I suppose the true mistake was RW’s to begin with but in hindsight....

I was at the LSU basketball game, I believe it was 1991 and it was awesome! As bad as Hank Flick was as stadium announcer at football games, he was equally great as the basketball announcer. I have always disliked the way he was unceremoniously dumped as the announcer. I wish at least occasionally prior to the basketball games that they would play a recording of him say "Everybody to the Hump for an Evening of Basketbaaaaall, Mississippi State STYLE!"

I hope I will live long enough to see another Final Four, another SEC West football championship, a baseball World Series Championship, and a Women's Basketball National Championship!

If one were to list the top 50 players during Stansbury’s tenure, I wonder how far down the list you’d have to go before getting to 5 players that couldn’t beat our current roster 80% of the time. It’s take a while for sure

We lost a generation. I was constantly on my kids to go while they were at MSU. They simply didn't go to men's hoops. They would go for women's occasionally. A more exciting product is going to have to be put on the floor on the men's side to draw a crowd. At this point, the men's team has lost so much momentum that ti will probably require winning consistently and with some semblance of offense, before that happens.

It for sure isnt as enjoyable as in years past, or even recent years. I am a basketball junkie and I just havent been interested as much this season.
- I geek on Gonzaga but they arent worth watching during the WCC slate, save against BYU and Saint Marys.
- UNC is horrific. Syracuse is meh. UK is better than meh, but I know only a few on the roster. Florida is underwhelming. UVA is underwhelming.
- Duke is really good, but doesnt have the hype/interest of last year or prior years.
- MSU has some really inconsistent offense that is tough to watch and enjoy.

Add all that up and there is some real apathy.

About a month ago, I half jokingly told one of my girls that she would be disowned if she went to Ole Miss since she jokingly claimed she would go there. I then said that if this were 2004, I would absolutely have disowned her if she went to Bama.
The Stans - Gottfried rivalry was bitter and brutal for fans.

Not really frnotrunners

Wow...thanks for reminding us of all the front running fans that used to come to the games.

Rick Ray was so tremendously horrible, and Howland is tremundously erratic. At this point low attendance is less about front runners and more about a non-worthwhile product being delivered.

I was there from 94-07. I really miss those days when they asked a Florida player from their championship team where the hardest place to play was and he said MSU without hesitation.

It's a shame they screwed up the student section to make blue hairs happy to sit there and tell you to sit down so they can see the game.
