Cal didn't develop SGA. SGA took it upon himself to come early, ask questions, work hard in practice, and study film as well as hit weights. Cal has ZERO to do with what SGA was this year. What SGA was this year is because HE took initiative and got better.I will give Cal credit and say he's developed a lot of guys esp since he's been here and what he did with SGA was unreal. However, Cal has had his share of 5 star duds. Poythress, Goodwin, Harrow, Wiltjer, Briscoe, Scowl, Gabriel, etc. These guys never got much, if any better, during their time here.
Matthews was the player we were missing last year. Prototypical college 3 that rebounds, plays defense and shoots it halfway decent. Lee would have also helped with rim protection. Something we were also missing. JMO.
Matthews was MOP of the West Region and he's going to the Final Four. You really sure he wouldn't have helped us last year? What about this year?Matthews would have been another FT clanker, shooting a pathetic 50 some odd % this season.
and sometimes you hang on to scholarships because you think another 5 star is going to fall into your lap.
Cal 720-204 .779 % 26 years 1 titleGreat recruiter. Good man. Average coach
Look, he probably thought Hump would be here like I did. Can't help when Charles transfers or people leave before you thought they would. Before this season I heard Shai will be a player here for at least a couple years. For a guy that can't coach we sure do see players that are predicted to be 2-3 year players get drafted 1st rd after 1 year. He makes players better, I don't see how anyone could argue that. Not everyone pans out, but they don't always anywhere.
He could have kept Hump if he wanted him. Cal is the best recruiter going and there's zero doubt he could have convinced him to stay if he wanted.
Shai looked very good in the Derby classic, surprisingly good. So I'm not sure how much Cal developed him as opposed to how underrated he was coming in. Cal has mentioned how hard Shai had worked on his own to get to where he is. This idea that coaches develop players is pretty overblown imo. If players want to work hard and are teachable they're probably going to improve under most staffs.
Don't think Cal is just an average coach per se but I do think he has chosen to be. Does he just roll the ball out there? Compared to what coaches have to do who don't get Cal's talent then Yes, he basically just rolls the ball out there. Vanilla offensive sets, nothing special on defense and expects talent to win out. That's the reason he doesn't mind grinders. He expects the talent to carry the day. Same reason he doesn't use timeouts, run out of bounds plays, etc. He expects to win on talent and given the talent he gets why wouldn't he. IMO he's fallen into the trap that says he doesn't have to go all out in the Xs and Os of coaching.
If he worked as hard on that part of the games as he does in recruiting and promoting I think he'd get even better results than he has. Just what I see from my 20,000 foot view.
Gabriel is the same player now that he was last year. He can hit a few 3's every now and then but still can't guard anybody and barely rebounds and really does nothing else. And I'm not just talking about OAD's. I'm talking player development. Wiltjer was no better his second year. Lee never improved in 3 years so he moved on.What? Gabriel is improving he just finished his soph year. Not all are OAD. Wiltjer, won a title with us and their just wasn't space for him so he decided to transfer, still wish he didn't, loved Kyle. Goodwin was in a no win situation on the NIT team and after we lost our best player. Briscoe was who he was. He was never good enough to be a OAD, he just didn't want to work. Poythress I don't get, never will.. Harrow sucked. Scal is one I think Cal didn't do enough with, but that's about it.
Please define the tool you used to identify coaching skills. You clearly are troll material and have no idea what you are talking about. He had hd talent. He did recr
He had done the least with the amount of talent he had had.
Good recruiter, good Christian man, average game coach.
It was caused by the refs calling 51 effing fouls. It didn't favor either team but it mucked the game up enough that the Cats athleticism didn't come in to play. So, you're the one full of it.You guys can say what you will about Cal’s coaching, but anyone who watched that game and blames the loss on anything but the terrible “offense” we ran is full of it.

Knox was being grabbed and held the entire 2nd half. Almost impossible for him to cut through.Good coaches adapt and overcome. Offense should have run through Knox the entire 2nd half. Instead we ran YMCA league ****.
Knox was being grabbed and held the entire 2nd half. Almost impossible for him to cut through. Did you even watch the game?
Gosh, if only we had a coach like you. SmhYou clear out a side and let him post up against the midget who was guarding him. Instead we ran him off the same screens 100 times and expected the results to change.
Exactly, a 6 inch height advantage and we can't him the ball? Must be the aliens stopping that. You clear out a side and let him post up against the midget who was guarding him. Instead we ran him off the same screens 100 times and expected the results to change.
Cal is the best at meshing egos and players together, but a middle schooler can design a basketball play. It is not rocket science. Do you ever watch a game and see the plays develope and how the kids set them up, how they clear one side of the floor, isolate a particular player to get him the ball, or are you just a cheerleader jumping up and down and waving your pom poms? We do not even have a set play for an inbounds play. Why is that?Gosh, if only we had a coach like you. Smh
