Joe Ganz is among my all-time favorite Nebraska players. He took such abuse from the self-proclaimed "smart" recruiting experts on the Internet boards at the time he came to Nebraska. Yet, he proved all those experts didn't know a damn thing about his ability. Such a great underdog story rising above all the critics.

How does Mason and Ganz have a connection? Is Joe’s dad BFF with Derek? I don’t understand how a coach can be hired like this, “based on what you know and not who you know.”

I guarantee you that they have a network connection. Ganz wasn’t hired to coach a position that he’s coached previously. Somewhere they’ve crossed paths and maybe no more than at a bar at the national coach’s convention. They’ve either met or Ganz and Mason have a buddy in common.
