Very nice game for the much maligned Davis - 4-8 from the field and 4-5 from the line for 12 points, 3 steals and 6 rebounds (second on the team). He also drew 2 key offensive fouls in the last 5 minutes when things got close. We don't win without him.

Off the bench is a good role for him. High energy.

Agree, there's plenty to pick at in JMike's game, and we've all done it. But, as captain, he's willing to come off the bench, always shows leadership on court, has improved in significant ways, doesn't get down on himselh, just keeps plugging. Should always be welcome and appreciated as a Rutgers guy.
Since it seems like it’s already decided that Lino is leaving, it appears we’d be pretty much set at point if we kept TF and J Mike. If they have to play together 15 or so mpg it’s not a disaster. Playing 2 small guards at a time is far from the biggest issue with this team, if fact, I’m not sure that specific thing has cost us much at all. When we’ve had to play all 3 small guards together to press - that’s been a bigger issue once the press is broken.
Buchanan is the only front court piece worth prioritizing and his natural position is really the 3. I would still keep both Ogbole and Dortch if they are cheap enough because I don’t think targeting back up bigs should be a priority either.
We need for someone not currently on the roster to start at both the 4 or 5 (I’m willing to slot Buchanan in at the 3 for 22ish planned minutes).
we still have Michigan state and possibly a one and done game against a good BIg team in the tourney to potentially get blown out in to ensure Dylan Grant collects enough garbage time baskets to stay a double digit scorer. There will be A-10 teams out there willing to pay someone like him way more than he’d be worth to us IMO to be their main guy.
Our 3 smallest players combined for 12 of 26 team rebounds. That’s ridiculous.
Buchanan had 7. The rest of the team combined for 7 rebounds and that included 2 “team” rebounds. So actually 5.
And to your point - yeah - J Mike crashes the boards and his role is to stay back to receive the pass on a rebound to bring the ball up. Either Lino or TF generally have the role of leaking out in the hope of a transition opportunity before the D gets set. Which makes the data even more astounding.

“Much Maligned.” There were too many games where he disappeared and did absolutely nothing. Simpson was crucified with better numbers and was driven out of town, so not sure if much maligned is entirely accurate.
Deserves credit for very nice game.

Huh? What does Simpson have to do with where we are right now. you don’t go from what Simpson was to backing up Dylan Harper. Simpson clearly didn’t want that role so it was a mutual decision. I don’t get your comparison. Davis was friends with Ace and wanted to stay to be the back up PG. It’s apples and oranges really.

With Lino? My guess (though I really have no idea) is probably not. In his case, the “money” consideration will probably be more forward looking ahead to potential for his junior season. Just think there will be more uncertainty around what his sophomore statistics would look like returning to RU vs going to a MWC or that level and putting up pretty looking stats where he earns a large check as a junior.

Besides which he played 30 mpg at St Joes as a junior despite coming off the bench and attempted almost as many shots as he did at RU that season. He was not going to be playing close to that at RU and both sides knew it.
So many things factored into those numbers. For EO, seemed like much of his time out there UMD barely took shots because they were turning it over. He again also took himself out of a few plays by staying on the pick and roll. I'd love to know if they tell him to hedge and stay rather than hedge and retreat to his man. The announcers made it seem like it's planned. Dortch just isn't physical enough. I really don't know what Grants issue is. I don't want to say he wasn't mixing it up, because I think he had a few blocks. Weird game.

Watch Buchanon' - after he he gets a defensive rebound he almost never outlets it to a guard. He almost always takes it by itself. That slows down the break - one of my 100 problems with the staff.
The two offensive fouls were his biggest contributions IMO.
JMike did some things he hasn’t done in almost any other game this year . He defended Cout , stole the ball and converted , took a great charge at the end and was a pest and caused Lopino to push off for another offensive foul. He hasn’t been that disruptive all year. Plus he got 6 rebounds including skying for one among 5 bodies when we seemed allergic to get a rebound. Guards have to rebound and he finally did the correct thing .
Now this is the issue , next game consistency. . He has had maybe 7 or so decent to good games but 22 others where he made no impact offensively ,defensively or setting us up. Next game Jeremy Fears so when he comes off the bench for Lino let him get in his grill , force them to start their offense further away from the hoop , pick pocket him , draw a charge and help on the defensive glass because they are big. Let’s see it. He is a junior. He knows the system and knows Michigan State . The last game turned when Fears started driving past him and others last game. That cannot happen . He stops Fears from getting into his drives that is a huge win . Let’s see it.
You impact 7 of 29 games. That is a player you think is indispensable ? So many games he was in position to impact the game with a lot of minutes and did not . I like him as a person as a Rutgers guy but in 3 years his improvement if any if very very slight.
Back up pg needs to be there for stability and giving the team energy.

Since we are all knee deep in roster construction for next season, this leads to the obvious question
1. Backup PG to who: Francis? Mark? Powers? Transfer?
2. If he is the backup PG - what about the rest of those players? What are their roles (and as importantly their $$?)
