I agree. But that’s plausible given the strength of the SEC and our non-con schedule.
The SEC was far weaker in 2001, although we played a strong non-con. I think we all agree Pope has to perform to keep the job. That’s the point and I’m with you there.
(Also, worth noting — I’m speaking purely in terms of what I assume would cause UK to move on.
For me personally to trust Pope is the guy, only an Elite Eight can do that. Period.)
I think Pope is on the right path with the assistants he brought in/is bring in, but this is a different time now. There is a ton of money on the table and if you lose the donors, you're done.
The thing is, there are programs out there that are consistently great every year (UConn, duke, Florida, Houston and now, Michigan), UK is a basketball school and we've gone too long without winning big.
This is Pope's third year and he needs to check himself on some of his methods (defense, substitution patterns, interviews, not getting blown out etc… ) His sub patterns are terrible and it looks to me, based on his comments and the recruiting misses, that he's bound and determined to stick with that. Everyone else sees it's a bad idea, he’s the only one that thinks it's the way to go. You don't rest guys that are cooking and you don't pull your entire starting 5 and put 5 bench players in.
Yes, college basketball as a whole, is much more competitive than it was in Tubby's years and most of Cal's years, but when other programs are consistently great, it shows me that it can and should be done at UK.
I'm supporting Pope, 100%, but he’s on some very thin ice. I never want to hear the word "beautiful", or "fatigued" ever again, not from anyone. I cringe every time Pope says those 2 words.
