Bomb it and start over. It’s never getting better. It’s hopeless.
I’m not sure there’s a more hopeless city in the country. Political leadership will never change. Hence, the city will never change. It seems with every term, they somehow manage to get worse than the administration before. How that’s even possible, I do not know.

A couple of years ago, Jackson had a crime index score of 3 on a scale of 1-100. It basically meant Jackson was only safer than 3% of the other metropolitan areas nationally.
Earlier this year the residents of Minneapolis were up in arms because they had recorded their 60 something homicide. They were renaming it Murderapolis. At the same time we were in the 90s on homicides.
The biggest thing Jackson has to overcome is apathy. Lumumba was reelected in June with only 18,000 votes in a city of 180,000 people. I think there were only about 30,000 voters cast total. If it doesn't change, the state will need to come in and just take over.

Democrats run city. Not much of a tax base. Not many places to work. Infrastructure is collapsing. No one in their right mind would invest there or build there. No real law presence to speak of.
One of their big problems is that they have no tax base, so the infrastructure is crumbling. They always seem to be on a boil water notice. Poverty breeds crime. I don't blame the mayor. Jackson was in shambles way before he arrived. What can he realistically do? It's a situation where it's too far in the hole to pull back out.
Here's the hard truth about Jackson.
The current leadership doesn't give two ***** about crime, lack of opportunity, education or white flight. Well-run cities do not get federal funds that are easy to pad your pockets with.
"But the tax base is leaving" - They want them to - it gives them more reason to ask Washington for a handout and guess what? Middle class families who pay taxes want roads paved, good schools and safe streets - those things cost money that can't be stolen. To the current administration, the middle class is a problem. Lower class people do as they are told, and upper class just send their kids to St. Andrews and live in a gated community.
There's an old joke that goes around Jackson.
The mayor needs a fence built. Government regulations require him to get three bids.
The first guy is a good ol boy from Brookhaven. He comes in, measures everything, does some figuring and says the fence will be $1000.
The second guy is from Pearl - he comes in and does the same thing - measures and calculates and says he can build the fence for $1200.
The third guy is from Jackson - he doesn't measure anything and tells the mayor it will cost $5000.
The mayor says - wow, you are way more expensive than the other two. What's going on?
He replies. $2000 for me, $2000 for you and we'll pay the guy from Brookhaven to build the damn fence.

It could be fixed but not with bleeding heart liberals running the show.

Nope.
1) He can help the governor with the state police district downtown. Deter crime out of that area, create a safe place for people to do business. That's step one.
2) Funnel all funds into the water, sewer and road system in a fair manner, just get the job done. That's step two.
3) Work to get the zoo over there by the museums, and consolidate attractions in a safe area. That's step three.
That's 3 practical steps, that don't have anything to do with what happened before you.
Instead, he fights all of those, for many of the reasons 615dog mentioned.
George Flaggs is doing about as good of a job as you can do. It might not be great, but he's trying.
The blame here rests squarely on the shoulders of the citizens of Jackson. There is a high probability that the perps all have criminal records and should already be behind bars but are on the street due to one of Jackson's liberal "judges" that was elected by the citizenry. Crime in Jackson will never decline until it's citizen truly say ENOUGH with one voice. That hasn't happened.
Katrina refugees helped jumpstart McComb’s down slide. Followed shortly by a joke of a mayor on Zach Patterson. Whitney Rawlings did what he could, but there was too much infighting. As long as Brookhaven and Summit remain viable, it’s not likely McComb will have a chance to recover.
Jeez, at least be internally consistent. If you can't steal money from construction projects, how are they stealing from a fence job?
There were 2 people shot at the Waffle House in Brookhaven this morning around 2-3 am. One airlifted to UMC. The Katrina refugees are everywhere from New Orleans to Jackson along I-55.
The crime in Jackson is never going to change until it gets a district attorney and four circuit court judges who actually take crime seriously. It often takes several years for a felony case to be presented to the grand jury (if at all), and at least that long to get a case set for trial. Sentences are usually lenient. It does not matter how hard JPD tries to keep crime at bay if the justice system provides perpetrators with little to no accountability.
You could also have a serious discussion about the prevalence of single-parent households and the correlation between that and poverty/crime, but that is not really a government issue.

The city I live in was supposedly a 1 on the crime index last year and a 2 this year. Which is totally crazy because it’s incredibly safe. Maybe average property crime, but nothing more. I think a lot of it has to do with people actually reporting crimes and the police recording them. I live in a city slightly bigger than Jackson, and people were freaking out here when homicides jumped from 4 to 13.
Throughout history, influential cities change & the same needs to happen in Mississippi.
The state capitol needs to be moved to Tupelo where there are two state universities within an hour to help promote the area.

The per diem and mileage they have to pay would be way too much. Hell the legislators would make more per year from that than they do pay from being in the State Government. Would Tupelo have the population base for all the positions needed? There's a lot to think through before you move state capital.
Same as any other similar city in the South, really. Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery, Memphis, Macon, Shreveport. The only difference is the size.
The only thing you can do is rope off the business center of the city and attempt to keep it clean. Moving it isn't practical. Too much ancillary services and infrastructure surrounding it.
