This is a silly question. If it's a choice between Ash or Schiano then duh Schiano.

But I personally don't want our ceiling to be 7-5. Schiano most years will fall between 5 to 7 wins. There is a proven body of work. I want more than average. The people on this board have a sick obsession with Schiano as if he is the only coach that could possibly ever get us back to the Motor City bowl.

I want a youngish coach with offensive playcalling experience....not another Defensive guy that will further our revolving door of offensive coordinators and offensive systems.

I say yes because I have no faith that they will find the next big thing

Selfishly I will be in NJ a few years more and the 2nd honeymoon with GS would at least generate some buzz and butts in seats

Ash is such a complete fail do you want Hobbs picking from a pool of young assistants who will rise? I don't....

Yes but.... not gonna happen

1. Rutgers is too low profile for Schiano now. He almost got the Tenn job last year.
2. Rutgers is all about coaches who are clean. It seems Schiano may have not been 100% clean at PSU
3. Schiano would use Rutgers as a stepping stone again. Make Rutgers into an 8-9 win team and then go to Miami, SEC school, or even higher profile ACC school.
4. Schiano as D-coordinator at Ohio St is an easier job for him that pays almost as much as a lower level head coach. Recruiting top talent is easy at Ohio St. The talent and tradition lead to 9-10 win seasons every year. He makes $1.5 mil a year at Ohio St plus bonuses.

Are you truly convinced another University President would allow their chosen AD to persue GS after the Tennessee fiasco and the most assured protests that would ensue?
Why?

I have said in the past that Schiano will be the greatest Rutgers coach after hearing so many negative comments about him. I enjoyed 10 years of a Rutgers football. Rutgers is now worst than when Schiano took over and I don’t know if we will ever return to above average.

I don't see GS getting a HC job anywhere else...age and the Tenn mess
poisoned that well

If Meyer said he can stay as long as he wants I do see that as a lower pressure alternative but GS does have an ego...that job does nothing for that

the PSU stink is a factor but I think that is not a deal breaker here...

the real question is does a stadium of PSU or UM fans and no fans for other games move the needle this year...if RU stays with Ash do they have 10k season tickets next year? as Michael Ray Richardson aptly stated many years ago..."the ship be sinkin'"

There are probably 10k season ticket holders who have had season tickets since at least the 80s and will still buy even if we are 0-12. This board has a few thousand visitors and a few hundred very active participants. While this board represents the die hards that are the reason fan is short for fanatic, it does not represent the average fan. We have 8-10k students at each game, a few thousand employees of the university, and at least 10k alums who are die hard supporters who will buy tickets regardless. What winning gets us is the casual fan or non-Rutgers alum football fan. It also may convert the NJ non-Rutgers alum Michigan / PSU fan who buys tickets to 1 game every 2 years.

In the new age of college football Rutgers is in a tough spot.
- if we were in the AAC we would be forgotten as UConn is now
- in the B10 NJ gets recruited by the big boys (ND, Ohio St, Michigan, Alabama, PSU) where it is tough for RU to get the top NJ kids.

The best we may be able to hope for is what Northwester does.which has been 3-4 below average seasons and then 1-2 winning seasons. Since 2012 they have had 3 10 win seasons, 1 7 win season, and the others below 6 wins.

Rutgers lacks a business oriented President that is Sports minded.

Sports drives the bus at successful schools and Football is the cash crop!

Nothing is going to happen with Schiano or anyone with Head Coaching experience until Barchi is shown the door!

When is the last time Barchi was seen at a Basketball or Football game?

I don't think a Charlie Strong would come to Rutgers for under $3mil. There are a lot of good names that have coached at top schools that are unemployed. None will want to enter a situation where they are set up to fail. Rutgers has a tradition of underperforming athletically in a region that is pro-sports 1st and college 2nd. We also are a region with many transplants that went to colleges not named Rutgers and have weak allegiances. The school is academics 1st and athletics is not as much a priority. Louisville, Memphis, TCU, and a host of other schools are easier jobs with better fan bases.

Only if he has moved on driving away good coordinators because he was an EXTREME micromanager that absolutely held us back at times.
We should be so held back as we were in 2006-2011. It's far better than the sh!tshow we're seeing now that isn't getting better anytime soon.

No doubt GS brings the team juice and respectability.

However, just to play devil's advocate, would we be OK if results for OSU/UM/PSU were similar to VILLE/PITT/WVU back in the day..?

Yes, his recruiting would go up, but the caliber of opponent should also be taken into consideration.

[Edit]: I see Schiano's effect as similar to Jim Harbaugh's on Michigan.

Simple yes, no, or undecided. Based on the situation today.

As you can see from the thread I started, it is hard to explain why Schiano would want to come here except with demands (control and a huge salary) that he is extremely unlikely to get. So I have decided to stop reading threads that debate whether Schiano was a good coach (he obviously was) or about whether it would be good for him to come back.

Ask yourself if you could ever see a Schiano team beating Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and/or Wisconsin. If you can't---and I can't--then you are settling for mediocrity. And I know plenty of our fans would be happy with that. And maybe what really holds Rutgers back is not the administration but the fans. We had a guy come in from Houston and try to give us a new offense. It was terrible but it was the FIRST year and the guy didn't have a single player that he recruited to work with. Never mind. Rutgers fans were pissed and he ran off and the coach went back to more or less the same old failed offense. Until the fans screw their heads on straight this program might not be able to achieve anything much.

I've been very outspoken in the past about not bringing Schiano back, but right now, we could use him. We aren't bringing him back to compete with Ohio State and Michigan. We're bringing him back so that we can beat the Kansas and the Buffalos. We may never be fully competitive against the super elite programs in our division, but we have to at least be able to beat the teams that we're supposed to beat. Less than that from a B1G program in a football talent-rich state like New Jersey is not acceptable. We have to stop the bleeding and return to respectability. Schiano is the most surefire choice we have for that.

Hard to put it better than this.

The problem wasn't the offensive style, but the guy that Ash chose to run it. If I recall correctly, one of the main concerns when Kill was hired as OC was that he had never run the type of offense that Rutgers had just spent a year running, so it was clear that 2016 was going to be a waste and not building towards something.

Big thing is how evolved has he become on offense in his time away. I say this for any defensive coach. Will he and can he hire competent OCs (yes plural because people leave) and leave them alone to do their thing.

Frankly I wonder how we ended up with McNulty and if it wasn't friendly suggestion by Schiano. I don't think Ash/McNulty had any prior connection so that kind of thing would make me wary of just how evolved Schiano has become. It could have been similar to the Shoop/Moorhead PSU connection even though they didn't work together at PSU.

I mean look at Ash he worked with Herman, similar to Schiano with Wilson/Day and see what we're running now and how confused he was in filling the OC position. So I would prefer to see much more offensive influence.

Where the program is today, people shouldn't be worried about what type of offense, who the O cord or D cord would be when/If Schiano comes back.
We need Schiano right now to save the reputation of the program, rebuild the damage Flood and Ash have done and also make recruits, fans and the rest of the nation respect Rutgers Football again.
Schiano is a program and Culture changer.

I think people are too enveloped in the RU bubble and don't see what goes on outside of it.

You think there aren't other coaches out there who could beat the Kansas and Buffalos on the schedule. Everyone thinks we're in this deep dark blackhole of oblivion. I understand the despair but the kind of things we're in now isn't all that uncommon.

Infrastructure is improving and money will only go up and those things are all permanent.

I've given examples in the other thread about similar situation where coaches brought their teams to respectable.

Marrone after Robinson at Syracuse, Brohm in his first year after Hazell at Purdue, Littrell taking over a 1-11 UNT, Leach after Wulff at WSU, Mark Stoops at Kentucky these last few years, Mullen at Miss State, Frost at a winless UCF...these are all lower status schools and the coaches that pull them out weren't rock stars for the most part, arguably Leach maybe. There are other turnarounds too.

Too often people don't see what's going on outside of RU. Reading the board I don't always get the impression people watch other games outside of RU and maybe the B10 but that's about it for the most part. I watch other games but I can't watch everything but I still read about what's going on around the country to see what's happening. If you do that more you'll see what the norms are what has happened at other places, etc...

So Schiano is a choice but certainly not the only choice which everyone seems to think. He could succeed or fail just like anyone and to me that very dependent on his evolution on offense since his last time here.

Ru football,Rutgers politics and the HS politics in NJ recruiting are a huge hurdle for a new coach at RU unless you are bringing in a Myer,Harbaugh

That's the thing where we are today is lousy but no more lousy than a lot of other lousy situations you find around the country. There are coaches out there and that aren't big names and aren't Schiano that can beat the Buffalos and Kansas' of the world.

the other poster is wrong..this is so much more then beating the Buffalos and Kansas of the world..this is about rebuilding a program to compete, not lose by 50 each game, and WIN in the B10. Schianos done it before and will do it again if the blockheads who run the place (Barchi and Hobbs) give him the chance, and IF we dont get shown the door first after this November by the B10.

First step is respectable second step is going after the big guys and becoming a Wisconsin type team but that's way longer term. My vision of that hasn't changed regardless of what's going on now.

I mean look at IU. Kevin Wilson had them on the verge of being a .500 team before he got let go. His defense in the early years was his biggest issue and I think Tom Allen who he hired as DC (now he's the HC) would have been a nice combo with him. They are still slightly in that area but maybe a step back. So you see you get the right coach and you can take those initial steps at these lower status programs and to me offense is the first key and pair it with just a mediocre defense and I think you can make some noise and then over time you can build on that.

Then bring in someone else in Year 2 to continue the transition. It's always something. Our fans are paradoxically patient and impatient at the same time. If we had stuck with the plan by this year our new offense might've been falling into place in Year 3. Instead we started the season at Square One, yet again wondering who the QB was going to be and going with a totally green true freshman.

I wasn't mentioning him to say he'd come to RU. Just giving examples of lousy situations around college football that have been turned around to a degree with coaches who weren't generally rock stars and those programs were about similar to us status wise as well.

People think we're stuck in a perpetual black hole and there's no way out or only one solution (Schiano) and I'm saying that's not the case on both counts. Our situation isn't all that uncommon and there are a suitable pool of coaches that can take us to respectable.

I agree with you. But the "we" in your response was Ash. He could have hired anyone he wanted for year 2. I'm sure he spoke with Kill about what kind of system he would run, and he has been in college football long enough to know that transitioning offensive systems is a multi-year process.

And because this one is a rockstar int NJ high schools and with NJ coaches. As they say on this board, he has stain.

Rockstar in NJ high schools? When did he ever bring in a top player from BC? He got a few Bosco kids toward the end, but for the most part he had a testy relationship with Toal. He lost the South Jersey kids on the regular. He augmented some of it with his South Florida ties. But stop acting like this guy walked on water.

I’ll try again to answer for you, but warning, I may be repetitive!
Answer:
Guaranteed 50 thousand in stands home opener...which translates into buzzzzz all off season.
Florida recruiting
NFL level players
Bowl games
Best recruiter in league now

Does that sound rhetorical?

Guaranteed 50K in the stands to see Schiano? Were we even getting 50K when he was 4-8 in his 2nd to last year?

People need to wake up. We aren't playing a watered down Big East with OOC against 2 service academies and a historically black college. He can't schedule his way to 7 wins. He couldn't beat Dantonio at Cincy. What makes you think that's gonna change with the resources he has at MSU. He couldn't beat Rich Rod, who couldn't win in this league.

I know mediocrity would be better than what we have now, but let's call GS what he is (at best): mediocre.

Ahh you are right. After that he faced Brian Kelly. The results:
L 28-23 at home
L 13-10 on the road
L 47-15 at home

Seems like GS struggled against top notch coaching.

stick to baseball, you're probably an Orioles or Mets fan

I'm actually a Rutgers Baseball fan. One of us has to be proud of NJ Sports, right?

But while I have your attention, let me please remind you that Schiano's career record in college is 1 game over .500. That he never won a conference championship. That he had as many losing season in the Big East as he had winning seasons after 2006. That he never beat West Virginia. That the most prestigious bowl game we ever got invited to under him was the Pinstripe Bowl. That he went from 7-9 to 4-12 in the NFL.
