unless he's one hell of a liar, dude might be a helluva poker player, or we up the offer big time. We're not gonna be able to lure the coach from formerly known as USL and UL-Lafayette (U Laf) and he was our top choice. Think about that. We were in a better position before Moorhead. LSU had to settle on Coach O and Mullen left convincing people you could win at State. Dak gave us some national attention and some writers even learned there was a difference between Mississippi State and Mississippi. Now LSU is on the precipice of a national title and is expected to be Top 5 in recruiting for the foreseeable future. Then there's Bama and Auburn. And A&M wants to win and is spending huge bucks on football (Jimbo was essentially paid a cool $1 million for each win this year. Those Texas schools have lots of cash). We’ve got a TOP 30 recruiting class yet 10 other SEC schools are ahead of us. Playing in the SEC West is brutal and it’s a hard sell for Mississippi State. And although we can pay a coach some big bucks, the wives of millionaires don’t exactly dream of living in Starkville.
You can win at State but it’s incredibly hard and requires down years from the big three in the West, perhaps soon to be the big four, and mediocre/awful years from Arkansas and Ole Miss. That’s the challenge a coach on the move faces. We just don't have much of a winning tradition in football.
We have a great tradition in baseball and an awesome new stadium, but we’ve never even won a national championship in that sport. Schools in the Pac 10 with tiny baseball stadiums have won them repeatedly. Even Coastal Carolina, a school in some city in one of the Carolinas, I'd have to google it to find out, has one. And when other SEC schools decided to invest in baseball, that made it much harder for State. Five SEC schools have won national championships in baseball since 1990, LSU has six of them, but none of them are located in Starkville. We turned baseball into a legit SEC sport, but we haven’t capitalized on it like some other schools.
Some of y’all seem to think it’s gonna be easy to get whoever we want. It's gonna be hard to get a coach with lots of head coaching experience unless he’s from this area (Hud) or has some ties to State (Grantham). We’ll likely settle on a coordinator which might work out fine for us. But even getting a coordinator might not be as easy as it once was because those guys are now millionaires. Maybe this Judge guy will be the real deal. I hope so. It was fun being a State fan during those good Jackie and Mullen years. But if the Giants think he’s head coach material, we’re not getting him. That’s just the reality of the situation. We're in rebuild mode although not like after Croom. We've got talent, but we're gonna have to give whoever we hire more than 2 years unless it's absolutely evident that he's in way over his head.
