unless he's one hell of a liar, dude might be a helluva poker player, or we up the offer big time. We're not gonna be able to lure the coach from formerly known as USL and UL-Lafayette (U Laf) and he was our top choice. Think about that. We were in a better position before Moorhead. LSU had to settle on Coach O and Mullen left convincing people you could win at State. Dak gave us some national attention and some writers even learned there was a difference between Mississippi State and Mississippi. Now LSU is on the precipice of a national title and is expected to be Top 5 in recruiting for the foreseeable future. Then there's Bama and Auburn. And A&M wants to win and is spending huge bucks on football (Jimbo was essentially paid a cool $1 million for each win this year. Those Texas schools have lots of cash). We’ve got a TOP 30 recruiting class yet 10 other SEC schools are ahead of us. Playing in the SEC West is brutal and it’s a hard sell for Mississippi State. And although we can pay a coach some big bucks, the wives of millionaires don’t exactly dream of living in Starkville.

You can win at State but it’s incredibly hard and requires down years from the big three in the West, perhaps soon to be the big four, and mediocre/awful years from Arkansas and Ole Miss. That’s the challenge a coach on the move faces. We just don't have much of a winning tradition in football.

We have a great tradition in baseball and an awesome new stadium, but we’ve never even won a national championship in that sport. Schools in the Pac 10 with tiny baseball stadiums have won them repeatedly. Even Coastal Carolina, a school in some city in one of the Carolinas, I'd have to google it to find out, has one. And when other SEC schools decided to invest in baseball, that made it much harder for State. Five SEC schools have won national championships in baseball since 1990, LSU has six of them, but none of them are located in Starkville. We turned baseball into a legit SEC sport, but we haven’t capitalized on it like some other schools.

Some of y’all seem to think it’s gonna be easy to get whoever we want. It's gonna be hard to get a coach with lots of head coaching experience unless he’s from this area (Hud) or has some ties to State (Grantham). We’ll likely settle on a coordinator which might work out fine for us. But even getting a coordinator might not be as easy as it once was because those guys are now millionaires. Maybe this Judge guy will be the real deal. I hope so. It was fun being a State fan during those good Jackie and Mullen years. But if the Giants think he’s head coach material, we’re not getting him. That’s just the reality of the situation. We're in rebuild mode although not like after Croom. We've got talent, but we're gonna have to give whoever we hire more than 2 years unless it's absolutely evident that he's in way over his head.

Holy wall of text. Stopped after the first paragraph. Where do you get that he was our first choice? Because a snowball picked up a little speed on message boards?

Well ****, might as well just close the athletic department I guess. Sorry, but I don’t buy the “wives of millionaires don’t want to live in Starkville” bit. The only reason they’d be millionaires is because of the school in Starkville. Hell, my wife would be okay with living in Meadville if I was making $4 million a year to do so.

You’ve certainly touched on a lot here, but I’ll sum up my feelings by saying I generally agree with you. State fans are known for being realistic about our place in the collegiate world. We just need coaches and players who are scrappy and don’t settle for being at the bottom. Toughness wins over our fanbase in every sport, so our new coach needs to embody that mentality, first and foremost. It’s possible to win in Starkville. It happens in other sports and it can happen in football.

Well, if a coach is scared to take a gig in the SEC West because of what it is, then I'm not sure I want him as a head coach. If he's not confident enough to take the challenge, then hopefully he'll have fun making much less money elsewhere.

I don't think it has anything to do with Starkville and whether or not the wives of millionaires want to live there either. I mean, Oxford is the center of the universe and we have accomplished WAAAAAYYYYY more than they have since integration.

Good grief man. We are one of the top 30 jobs in the country. If we wanted Napier, we could’ve gotten him from ULL. Let’s just see how this goes with Judge if he is in fact the man. We provide a coach an amazing opportunity to coach in the best league in the country against some of the best coaches and become a millionaire in the process.

So we cant win at football because we arent elite and we cant win at baseball because we are elite? You could have just posted injuns or We are Mstate and saved us the 30 minutes of reading.

That's exactly what I said, we can't win at football, even though I mentioned when we did, or baseball. I didn't write that we haven't won a national championship in baseball despite having a great program. Instead, as you interpreted, I clearly wrote "we can't win at baseball" even though I actually didn't.

Sarcasm aside, coaching at State is incredibly challenging and Starkville, even though I like the place, might not be the ideal destination for some people. Coaches who have options to go elsewhere for similar money, or to stay where they are, might prefer to do so.

Remind me of the number of our past 5 head coaches with overall winning records who have gone on to better gigs (yes Jackie retired. Love Jackie btw, really a good guy). Moorhead had a winning record but I doubt he gets a better job in the near future. Just bringing a bit of reality to what Cohen, who may or may not be a good AD, is facing. We'll get a good coach, likely someone with ties to State, but not necessarily our first or second choice. Of course, we can always say the coach we hire was really our first choice or not mentioned how far down the list we had to go. I hope it's Judge.

I know this is a sports message board so I'm aware of the types of responses to posts. I also know there are a lot of quite thoughtful people on this site.
