First off, let me say congrats on getting Hoiberg. I think he's a great coach and he gave us some great years at ISU, both as a player and coach.I wanted to give a little insight on him from my perspective and answer any questions if you have any.

First, his staff - Charlie Henry is his X's and O's guy. Very promising young guy who gets a lot of tape and game planning together for Hoiberg. Followed him to the Bulls. Matt A. is a recruiter, but he was primarily the transfer guy, who went to St Johns in the interim. So I think bringing him in is a clear sign he's going to go the transfer route hard, which I think is a good idea.

ISU fans really embraced transfers, calling ourselves "Transfer U", and I think you should too. It's a lot of fun. If you're into recruiting in the slightest, it's super exciting, because guys come on the board and then 4-6 weeks later they are signed and in school for you. There isn't the multi-year will they or won't they with high school recruits. Plus, the guys are more mature, they've been through college basketball, and quite frankly most of the time they know it's their last chance and I think they are generally a little more appreciative of it. Plus, I think experience is underrated, so you consistently have a little more of an experienced team.

I'm sure some of you guys have looked at KenPom and stuff like that, statistical profile is of a team that is absolutely elite on offense but is just okay on defense. I can't remember but there was a streak that was broken when ISU scored 69 points in a game toward the end of his tenure, and that was the first time ISU was under 70 in I think multiple years. For several years they were the #1 fastest tempo team in the country with an average possession length of under 14 seconds.

Regarding ISU fans, I don't really want to get into it but suffice it to say that there are some fans on each side behaving like children right now, ones who only remember the good times of the Fred era and not the bad and are constantly pining for him, and the ones that are acting like jilted lovers. I find both to be absolutely insufferable.

How can ISU fans be so cool and Iowa fans be such DBags? One of life’s many mysteries.

Miles had plenty of transfers in his 7 years at Nebraska, so it’s not like it’s something new for us..

Most the fans from Iowa that visit here are Herky’s not Cyclones...

I can already tell the jealousy in them by landing a Head Coach they had a hard time beating..

Thank you - really appreciate your insightful thoughts. By the way, I am an ISU alum (grad school graduate in 1992), with earlier degrees from UNL in 1978 and 1980. Now I am working in Kansas for KSU. I guess some would call that "redneck eclectic". Cheers!

What do you know about Bobby Lutz? He is supposedly another candidate for an assistant position at Nebraska and was with Fred at ISU. Good recruiter? Good developmental coach? Thanks for the insight...

Lutz was on Fred's first staff. Former coach at NC State, getting up there in years. Sort of helped Fred transition to being a head coach. He is a pretty good recruiter but better at developing talent.

I'd be a little surprised if it was Lutz - that would leave Matt A. as the only recruiting focused guy, and I think Fred could use two.

IMO I think he should look at somebody that is tied in to Minnesota/Wisconsin high school kids. Close enough to Lincoln, I don't think Pitino is there for the long haul, lot of local talent there. That way you'd have Matt A. as the transfer guy, and another guy tied into more local high school talent. I think Fred and Charlie could handle the X's and O's, but Fred is ultimately a much better judge of it than I am.

Thanks. Good take. I have always rooted for ISU unless they were playing the Huskers. I have always had a great time in Ames at football games and have lots of friends and family who are ISU alums. IMO our student and fan bases are very very similar in their makeup. Lots of folks involved in ag or not many generations from it who know the right way to treat people.

Why does Matt A. only focus on transfer guys? I don't believe you can recruit a transfer well but not a high school kid, the skills are the same.

You are taking this ISU fan’s comments as gospel. If you look at articles from his time at St John’s it sounds like he is good at recruiting high school kids too. But of course transfers may be needed initially and Fred was only at ISU 5 years.

That's just where he had his most success. I'm just focusing on where I think guys' strengths are. He had a lot more success with transfers at ISU, because he was the transfer guy and the absolute 5* 1 and done recruiter guy. Where he really made his hay was recruiting transfers like DeAndre Kane and others.

Nothing is gospel here and I didn't follow him at St. Johns. I'm just giving you my impressions, and overall I think he's got a great staff so far and one that isn't unexpected.

Your good Bryce.. we appreciate the info.. talk a little more about the xs and os please. I remember his teams being up tempo transition. Alot of mid range but always had athletic bigs for rebounds.. specifically on defense does Hoiberg like to switch man to man or play a lot of zone.. or did it vary with personnel?

Hoiberg likes to play man-to-man but will go to some zone due to his players foul trouble or being unable to stop the other teams "dribble penetration". Don't forget after his first year at Iowa State he hired Doc Sadler to run his defense because prior to Doc his team had trouble stopping their opponent. Maybe he will hire Doc again?

Amen. Totally agree. I have been going to ISU(basketball/football) games for 45 years so I have some experience with it.
