Apparently prince fans are shitting on timberlake for paying homage to him last night. I'm in my mid 30s and don't consider myself a music snob at all but do understand the importance of Prince had in certain genres but i kind of think he's overrated in terms of a male pop musician. His sound does not have lasting power to me and think there is a ton of pop music from 60s, 70s and even the 80s that resonates generation to generation. I feel like its definitely a sound of the time. Timberlake is a better pop performer/artist than prince in my opinion.

Prince does suffer from some of the production excesses of the '80s, particularly the big puffy synths (and his inability to edit himself). "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" have the same problem Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" has - great songs, but they're tied to the '80s, where something like Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" sounds timeless (at least to my ears).

That said, this early-40-something definitely doesn't think he's overrated, but I admit he was a fixture of my childhood and youth (as much as was possible in Starkvegas). I caught part of the Sign O' the Times film Saturday night and was blown away at how great it is - amazing singer, guitarist, dancer and overall showman. He was the heir to James Brown. If Prince had shown any capacity to edit and only release the best 10 songs he has at the time rather than have seemingly everything from 1997 be a multi-disc album I think he would've demonstrated his impressive ability to reinvent and stay fresh.

And all 5'3" of him whipped Charlie Murphy and crew in basketball

Timberlake wishes he could play the guitar like Prince. You need to throw away the **** you're on.

Should he even be considered pop though? I'm looking at his discography and looks like he was mostly nominated in r&b categories in the major awards. I see his music listed in all time pop categories. List him with rock or r&b but pop seems displaced.

He wore a rasberry beret, so yes.

Admittedly, he wasn't my flava, but he did have talent. Seriously - when you can write songs that become hits for lots of others. Yeah, he's probably a big deal. Springsteen is like that but was more my style.

Prince and Timberlake are both talented singers and songwriters. Not only was Prince a great performer he was a songwriter, studio owner, musician and movie star. He wrote songs that became hits for Sheena E, The Bangles, Tevin Campbell, Morris Day and the Time, Sheana Easton, Alicia Keys, Chaka Khan, Martika, Stevie Nicks, Sinead O'Connor and TLC. Timberlake has written for about 7 performers and there may be more during his career but the impact Prince had on the music industry is huge!

Go get your hearing checked. Timberlake sounds like a rat with bronchitis

I don't know what he sounds like most of the time, but all he was doing was groaning and crooning last night. Sounded terrible. I don't pay much attention to him, but I think I've heard him do other songs that were to my taste. Prince had a few that I liked ... Little Red Corvette, Purple Rain to name a couple ... but I was never a huge fan. Michael Jackson was better.

Prince isn't overrated. He apparently used to write/record a new song just about every day for awhile. He's considered a musical genius. I am not a Timberlake fan but he should know that when you agree to be the SB halftime show you're about to get a whole bunch of heat coming your way. Comes with the territory. Lots and lots and lots of haters in this world that don't like people getting the spotlight if it isn't their favorite artist.

Without a doubt, Prince was the best concert that I ever attended. Definitely not even among my top 10 favorite artists, but damned he put on a show.

You need to seriously go back and listen to Prince which you've clearly only done the newest. He is a trendsetter, brilliant musician, brilliant songwriter, and many of his songs, to me, are timeless (I'm 51). Listen to private joy, controversy, do me baby, 1999, delirious, DMSR, little red corvette, and just dozens of other songs. Had he not gone off too poppish with raspberry beret and then swung too far back to be anti-pop and just stayed the course of the late 70's early 80's he would be considered closer to Hendrix for the 80's generation. Someone who bridged pop and r&b and blues and rock. Funny though, he opened for the stones in 78 in California and they booed him off stage. 3 years later he was HUGE.

Prince was a phenomenal musician. No doubt about that. With that said, I’m not a huge fan of his songs but there is no denying his talent. He deserves all the praise he gets.

No. Dude had more talent than just about anybody....ever. His style may not be everyone's taste but he had a little bit of everything. Most underrated guitarist of all time.

Somebody asked Eric Clapton one time what it was like being the best guitar player in the world. He said I don’t know, ask Prince.

He's probably the most prolific songwriter ever. There is an entire room at Paisley known as "the Vault" that contains all of his unreleased material. The estate is in the process of figuring out release of some of that. He played 27 different instruments very well... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SErtl9N5kdY ...still moved like a gazelle after double hip replacement (would do the splits and push himself back up)and is respected in the musical community as one of if not the most underrated guitar player of all time.
