My thoughts are "yes." I imagine he circled this game as a legitimate chance to beat a ranked team. He got his team to play well on the road. But could not get the win.

Stick a fork in him after the season.

My opinion.

That would be a mistake. I think he is a good coach. Purdue's program was in shambles when he took over. I think if they give Hazel a couple of more years, he'll make them competitive. I really like their freshman QB and RB.

Read their recruit list to date. They do not appear to be trending in the right direction.

He usually is able to motivate the team and they look better than in previous years. I know that may not be saying much but I think he is a good coach. Recruiting, I don't know. Getting talent to West Lafayette while in a down period has to be tough.

Purdue AD already said he'd be back next year.

I agree. I think the QB was pretty strong. I hate saying this because I've got scars more than a decade old, but I also like some of the wrinkles in John Shoop's offense. He used motion to give tactical advantages, which is not something NU does frequently.

Sometimes bad decisions can have consequences for many years to come.

Tiller's preferred successor was Brock Spack who would have been a great choice. Instead the astronauts in charge chose Danny Hope.

Hazell is still digging out of that mess.

By my reckoning they look improved over last year and remind me of our 1994 team, hopefully less the gamblers.

Dumping Hazell would be a huge mistake and would most likely set the program back another 3-4 years.

He came to Purdue when Purdue was empty, although his recruiting is suffering. I don't see why he wouldn't get another few years.

Brock Spack is doing a terrific job at Illinois State. They finished 2nd in the National FCS championship game by the slimmest of margins to North Dakota State last year. Although Spack is from the defensive side, they have a very potent and entertaining offense, but no transfers from the SEC that I'm aware of.

His players also have a graduation rate that is higher than the general student population.

PU AD on BTN last week gave him the clear "thumbs up" citing the usual cliches: new facilities going, his recruits need time to grow into starting rotations, etc. He stated over and over that at PU "we do things right". From the most senior BT AD he seemed sincere but clearly the real focus is a facilities upgrade that transcends who is coaching now.

They had 14 2 stars in 2015 and 10 2 stars in 2014. I'd imagine they'll be doing another 2 star grab between now and signing day.... So in other words, Glades will be picking them for next years National Title.

Is that true about Spack? I knew Hope was named coach-in-waiting - I had assumed that that was Tiller's doing, as I think that's typically been the case.

Note: Spack has a spack-tacular moustache.

No. They already announced that they were bringing him back.

There are too many better openings right now. Maryland and Illinois are better jobs in the conference. They might as well hope Hazell can show signs of life in Year 4.

Fair... but there are always going to be better jobs than Purdue open.
