No he’s just afflicted with iowa QB syndrome.

McNamara couldn't run or pass. Gronowski isn't any better throwing the ball but he can run with it. If you're alluding to the fact that the staff knowingly bought another broken QB, then yeah. It's inexplicable really.
That wasn't rust. That's what they said about Cade. Gronowski played all of last year and had all summer to prepare. There's obviously something wrong with him.

He had the balls and the arm strength to fit the ball into tight windows, and force it into 50/50 situations where he had a receiver that was capable of making the play. He is THE reason BF ever coordinated a decent passing game.
The Shanahan offense excels at getting the primary receiver open. Either Mark is too scared to hit guys in their windows, or the receivers are just that bad again. Probably some of both.
Albany was likely the easiest possible opponent to schedule for an opener.

I'd like to think so but in an interview he was asked if he was nervous and he said no, and he was just excited to get out there and get started.
You have to wonder truly what it was today though. He was extremely inaccurate with his passes, reminded me of Christensen. I sure hope he snaps out of it next week.

I think nerves explain the little wild first throw, and the throws at the ankle. But I don't know what can account for the failed TD pass. It's HARD to throw it that short. I remember Christensen throwing some dirt balls, but that throw was inexplicable.
His footwork was God awful on his first few passes. It was better with the last few and they were much better. Hopefully it's just the first game yips. I guess we'll find out next week.
Nerves seem like a stretch given this guy's past. One of the most experienced qbs in college football history. I'm worried.
Good post and great call on the JC compare….I saw some Sully in his throws. Definitely a higher QB IQ than Sully though…I would think that over excitement would translate to overthrows (IE Spencer), yet he seemed to have the ‘yips’ against an inferior opponent…I can see KF really pulling in reigns going forward.

Yeah, we have definitely been down this road before. All we can do at this point though is hope this time it ends differently. He looked good running the ball at least and apparently Iowa has about 12 running backs who are all pretty good. That probably had more to do with our offensive line being pretty much unchallenged today. It won't be so easy next week.
11 rushing attempts is asking for him to get hurt. Nearly every running back looked solid. Why have your million dollar qb run 11 times
Gronowski threw for pas completion percentage of 60% in 2024, 68% in 2023 and 65% in 2022. Based on this I think he will be fine. Need to throw the ball to beat ISU. The running game looked great so this should also help the passing game going forward.
Now we know why Ferentz always schedules patsies for the home opener.
