We better learn to battle and switch on screens or theyre gonna get a ton of open looks and drill 3’s and youll be able to hear a pin drop
I actually think Iowa will be very tough to beat. They have so many guys who can hit threes that it will be tough to keep them under 70 -75 points. I think the real challenge will be whether we can shoot well enough to stay close to Iowa. If not , Iowa will win by 15 or more points.

Looking forward to this game as an Iowa fan. I watched a bit of your game last night and congrats on a great win.

A couple of points not made so far. Wieskamp may be the best shooter on the team. Pure lights out shooter who is getting to the rim more and more. Moss has been off for the past few games. He has games he can’t miss and then.... Luka Garza has been picking up fouls the last couple of games and has been ineffective. When he’s in and on, he a low post threat.

RU will have to get to 70 to win. I just don’t see the Hawks scoring less than that. The Iowa defense has improved, but from putrid last year to somewhere around below average. Maybe poor. Really really susceptible to guards that drive and dish.

Well we have guards that drive the dish. Thanks for some hope Iowa.

Iowa's a much different team on the road vs. at home, the Northwestern home escape notwithstanding.

They got smoked at Purdue and Michigan State and lost at Minnesota too. Okay, no shame in that, but they haven't blown anybody out on the road. Northwestern by 10, Penn State by 7, Indiana by 5. Northwestern and Penn State both had second-half leads against them too.

Think this may be a game to go small with Gene at the 5 and Harper at the 4 so we can switch almost anything..We need our 5 guys to be able to cover threes and the pick and pop. Need to switch as much as possible.

If you want to disrupt their offense you put Mathis on Bohanon to make him work initiating offense. There are some multi dimensoial scorer on iowa so I'd think Baker would get Bohannon

I am worried about Harper Jr defensively.
harper has been damn good on the defensive end of the floor. You've been posting some **** that is just totally off-base lately. Geo is who I'm worried about the most on D vs iowa as he is awful at dealing with screens

You’re going to need to cover a pure post up player in Cook, who can get 20 pretty easily and Garza, who is 7 feet and has some post up moves as well.

Iowa has had some success with a trapping press. They are pretty long and it’s made teams turn the ball over, particularly NW. they also use it to shorten the shot clock. Your thoughts on that?

Iowa also has had success with a 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone, making teams shoot over that. Again, your thoughts

Zone will give us problems in my opinion, but will help us on offensive glass. We have no pure shooters and often times try to force high lows vs zone and turn it over.

Have only watched Iowa in spurts this year, but obviously we have plenty of 7 footers to deal with size, i just worry about their mobility on the perimiter, specifically Doorson; so we may see more Myles Johnson who moves better, or even Shaq Carter at the 5 with gene at the 4 who move better on perimeter.

As far as the press; we don't have a pure point guard so sometimes it hurts us, but we have 4 or 5 guys that can handle the ball ok (against Illinois pressure we only turned it over 9 times all game because we went small). What our guards can do is attack the rim especially after we break the press (Harper, Mathis and Geo are all good at attacking the rim). Mathis and Harper for freshman are really good at attacking in transition and after breaking the press.

I think with the personnel Iowa puts on the floor we are not going small. I think the minutes distribution we saw vs. Northwestern will be similar (I hope). It was obvious from the 1st possession that defense was very important (even though we quickly went out of it). The substiution patterns and minutes told the story. I also think Pike took 4 out of 5 out for a bad possession, but could be wrong.

I see
Eugene sharing the 4 with Carter 30 and 10
Myles and Doorson sharing the 5

Only change 1 thru 3 is I think Pike will see the film and see Issa did a good job defensively and you may see the 14 minutes Kissa got go mostly to him.

No player getting over 30 minutes is the way to go.

Keep in mind Iowa, other than 6'7'' Baer doesnt have a shot blocker. Important! i think Harper and Mathis will be green lighted on any DREB to go all the way to the rim. May get a charge or 2, but should get some positive results.

I am very worried about a ful court zone trapping defense. May require Geo to play more minutes than we want, force us out of pour comfort zone, cause some pick 6s (2s), and keep us from running our half court sets

agree with cutting Doorson's minutes this game. Their big have some range and play further away from the basketball, garza really

Depends on you definition of bigs. Garza plays away at times and can have a pulse as a shooter. However, of all the players Iowa has that consistently take 3’s, he’s the worst shooter. Cook doesn’t get away from the basket much. Baer is 6’7 or so and can shoot, but isn’t really a big. Kriener as a backup doesn’t shoot can play some defense though.

Iowa has a number of really long 6’5 to 6’7 guys. They are sort of interchangeable on defense. They don’t really have a dominant shot blocker.

They have three guys who will absolutely hit you from three. Bohannon, Moss, and Wieskamp. The best player of the three is Wieskamp. A freshman who is a decent defender. He’s had a tendency to make three or four in a game and then disappear when defenses focus on him.

We are very long too..We really don't have a guy smaller than 6'5 on the court, so our guards are long and big too, so hopefully this will help defensively vs Iowa. I just hope we can figure out our ball screen defense, especially on pick and pops to prevent open threes.

The one thing we can't let happen is a repeat of Michigan where we get trounced in the first couple of minutes and suck the life out of the crowd. That game ended up competitive but the opening took the wind out of the sails and meant there never really was a moment when you felt we could win. So...a strong start, please!

What's the deal with his son on the team and getting a lot of minutes....a freshman guard and he can't shoot. What's the deal here? Wouldn't some players get upset the coaches son was taking their minutes?

There isn’t anyone else. Simple as that. Connor can drive but doesn’t shoot much. Doesn’t turn the call over much either. Last year Bohannon got worn down by all the minutes he had to play. Maishe Dailey can play the point a little, but he doesn’t shoot well either.

Pure point guard is the one position that Fran hasn’t been able to recruit that well. Came in second on a bunch of recruits. Connor was pretty rated though.

Iowa takes higher percentage shots. They can also hit free throws.

I know Jay Young personally loves to throw different looks at main scorers. Here, you have Tyler Cook. He will tear apart Rutgers just like Illini inside kid did if Rutgers does not do better.

I expect a lot of fronts, and different looks. I would like to see a mix of Johnson, Doorson, Carter, Omoruyi, and Harper Jr on him. He turns the ball over a lot, so on every one of his defensive rebounds, I would put immediate pressure on him before the first outlet pass goes out.

If they can let him not have his best game, Rutgers has a chance.

Iowa has a balanced offensive attack. Rutgers has been more balanced in the past three games than they have ever in the past three years.

RAC must ROCK.

Let's go!

Yeah, ya know what, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm totally okay with giving up pick and pop opportunities to Garza when we hedge on high ball screens when he's the screener rather than have guys like weiskamp and bohanon get open looks. Personally I'd put Montez on Weiskamp and have him just follow him around all night. weiskamp is a damn good player. Bohannon just has such a quick release and just goes unconscious for stretches at a time and he has some really solid range too. Personally I'd have caleb mcconnell on him to try to disrupt him with some length that he's probably not used to dealing with. With Moss being that he's longer I'd probably try to rough him up a little bit with a mix of mcconnell and harper on him.

Looking at their conference averages home/away

Home:
Pts: IA 78.1, Opp 72.7
FG%: IA .464, Opp .435
3P%: IA .399, .318

Away:
Pts: IA 77.3, Opp 80.8
FG%: IA .451, Opp .494
3P%: IA .378, Opp .328

They allow 8 more ppg on the road, but only score about 1 point less. They do allow a much higher FG% on the road

Too many people are falling victim to stereotype of Harpers build. They see a little extra baby fat and think he’s a liability out on the wing. Fact is he might be the smartest player on the floor defensively he is always in terrific position, great help D, and as he physically matures he will continue to get better.

the key to the win last year vs Iowa was to attack a team that does not play good defensive. Much like the Illinois game, I think RU has to play at a higher more aggressive pace because thats how you will beat teams who do not play great half court D....you attack.

Iowa is better than last year and are more potent offensively so the issue will come down to turnovers and rebounding as usual...limiting 2nd chance opportunities and getting more 2nd chance opportunities, RU will not outshoot Iowa but they can outplay them by doing all the those other things that they have been doing in their wins

Note Thiam had 16 in this game last year..sigh

Wieskamp isn’t just a shooter. Do you play mainly man? The parts of the NW game I saw you were in man. He is a willing driver to the hoop. The coaches have been pushing him to be more active driving to the basket. Very athletic long guard. If you’re going to go man, they’ll run bunches of screens and try and isolate the shooters or Cook/Garza on the block.
