Yes, every city has ugly parts and pretty parts.

It is either ignorant, or dishonest, or both to use that fact to try to minimize the ugly truth about Jackson, Mississippi.

Not exactly. Anything along Ridgewood and its side streets have gone down hill fast quick and in a hurry. I can assure you, when I was doing real estate and showing properties and potential rental houses to my investors, the hair would stand up in my neck in several areas that used to be the way you see it. It’s rough and getting rougher. Probably the worst southern State Capital in the USA.

And I think Jackson has less hope than Detroit ever did.

These are some hard truths of life that a bunch of people better wake up about. And it's happening everywhere, due to lack of voter turnout/concern/etc. I guess people think things will be good forever and they wake up with a buffoon in charge.

There are plenty of nice neighborhoods inside the city. I agree downtown is pretty desolate but 1/2 of the city is nice.

I wanted to live in Jackson so badly when I graduated from MSU in 92 for all of the reasons above (things to do). I did for a time live in an apartment on McDowell road, but I worked in Copiah County at night ironically. My wife works near downtown in the Cocharan Federal Building, but she leaves at 4:30 and come straight home. She's been there nearly 25 years and has seen some things.
In other news, Kenny S T O K E S just held aNOTHER community meeting and prayer service about crime in Jackson, so I'm sure it will help.****

That's silly.

- Baton Rouge: Almost 900K and holds the state's major university;
- Montgomery: Smaller but has redeveloped downtown into a significantly nicer area than anything Jackson can boast;
- Memphis and Birmingham: These aren't worth mentioning, nearly twice the population and economy and don't even talk to me about the downtowns. What's next, you gonna mention New Orleans? Come on, mane

Not even close. You MIGHT argue Montgomery but I wouldn't. They at least have an Air Force Base and has closer access to the two major universities.

I think you have to go to Shreveport or Macon to find comparables, and they are significantly smaller.

Glad this guy captured all that helpful new information on video, otherwise people would have been flooding down there to McRaes or Gayfers this week. I was planning to bop over to Diamond Jims with a sack of quarters to play Joust and Street Fighter this Friday night, but I guess I'll cancel my trip now.

Eastover is a great neighborhood. My son has 8 kids in or around his grade that live within a bike ride and 2 lakes for fishing. That being said it is definitely over priced. If we did not go to school at prep, we would be out. Went out to reunion the other day and they place is tough to beat, seemed to have the best of everything a family could want and need.

Because I'm bored today..... Memphis and Jackson doesn't even compare because Memphis is a much larger city. Or so it seems to me. Memphis can get rough but it still has the poplar corridor, midtown and east Memphis that is decent.

my impression of Jackson is, it isn't as bad as you are led to believe from this board. I wouldn't live there but ... I have to go to the Fed bldg occasionally and I enjoy eating at the mayflower. It's always a decent trip to me. The area around Belhaven and Millsaps seems ok. However I've never explored west or south Jackson.

To me and this maybe beside the point, the Pearl River bottoms running through and dividing the city is a negative. I know there isn't much you can do about that. But it definitely gives the area the feel of west of the river is one place and east is another place altogether. Rankin and Madison county are nice. I consider that all to be "Jackson" but I'm sure yall don't.

Jackson is probably more comparable to Montgomery and Little Rock. Jackson proper v LR proper, LR is nicer. But if you include the suburbs of Jackson, I think Jackson metro has just as much to offer. Montgomery is an absolute crap hole.

I’m past the stage of mincing words in my life. Jackson can improve itself, but it will be up to the dominant demographic there now, yes African Americans, to lead that charge.

I suspect that as soon as that demographic commits to improving what is obviously wrong, then other demos will get interested and possibly even excited about helping out.

I hope it happens.

I lived there for a few years in the late 80s. My take, even back then, was that it had all the big city problems with few of the big city amenities. I couldn’t wait to get out of there.
