Fake video. I'm pretty sure if there were any problems at all in Jackson, somebody here would've mentioned it before.
Glad this guy captured all that helpful new information on video, otherwise people would have been flooding down there to McRaes or Gayfers this week. I was planning to bop over to Diamond Jims with a sack of quarters to play Joust and Street Fighter this Friday night, but I guess I'll cancel my trip now.

1/2 is a bit of an exaggeration. Most of that Old Canton & Ridgewood stretch is really sketchy.

I worked downtown and my office was in the trustmark bank building. I was there in the 80’s-90’s. Downtown along capital street and one block either side was ok. Not many empty store fronts, buildings mainly occupied and lots of people.
When we closed office and moved to Madison in 1998 I could see the migration out of downtown to Madison, Ridgeland and Brandon beginning. Some of the older staunchest Jackson supporters were starting to procure office space and buildings out of downtown
I have not been back downtown in probably 6yrs. I was shocked by the blight from this video. down capital street. Not shocked by the blight of neighborhoods downtown and in south Jackson. Those scenes in the video of blighted neighborhoods was unreal.

Facebook decided to provide me an unsolicited post recently, the thread was a Jackson resident complaining about the homeless that have encamped on the south side of County Line road pretty much across the street from the Krispy Kreme. The OP and replies basically made it about everyone but the City of Jacksons issue. Couldn't understand why they set up on one side of the road, but not on the Ridgeland side? Apparently it is the States and Federal Governments issue for not providing enough funding. I started to type out a civics lesson of where public works funding comes from, but I just shook my head, poured another cup of coffee and moved on. We have a portion of the population that is ignorant to Civics and has the mentality that it is someone else's responsibility to fix their issues. This is how extreme Socialist have become so popular.
Elect third world leadership. Get third world results.
The people electing the leaders have a third world mentality. I really don't think there is a solution to it and it's frustrating.

There's a reason Parham Bridges put up a big fence all around the park and closes at 7:30 now. And it ain't because east of 55 is safe.

Honest question. Has any area of Jackson actually gentrified, or are the areas that are safe to live in just continuing to get smaller and more gated?
I grew up in two different houses in Jackson and my grandparents lived in three different houses in Jackson and I don’t feel comfortable or particularly safe driving by any of those 5 places now.
And I think this is very common in all places around this country with similar demographics.

Picadilly is like a roach after the apocolypse, man. They are survivors and are still going to be around after everything else is gone. There is always (always) a market for massive quantities of macaroni & cheese served in a tub.
I watched some of the video, and my first reaction is that you can make any city look terrible or great, depending on where you film. Is that the case here or is Jackson really that bad?
The last time I was there was after the super hot Memphis/State game (early 2000s) when we drove through on the way to New Orleans. It was dark then, so nothing was visible. Last time before that was an elementary school field trip to see the governor's mansion and the zoo - but that was a really long time ago.

Curious about the town you, dear reader, live in. Does it have any blight or degraded neighborhoods, or is it just two-story houses with pristine yards as far as the eye can see?
North of JA (and even around it) is awful

The video IMO is a where there's smoke there's fire situation. It's not all like that, but a lot is.
Jackson has 2 types of citizens left. People who REALLY like Jackson, and people who can't/couldn't get out. Maybe there's a small 3rd group, students who live there to finish Med School/Law School/Millsaps/Belhaven.
The city's decline has become a negative feedback loop. Something changed in the 90s (I legit don't know what), and ever since there hasn't been much reason for the 20s/30s crowds to stick around or for people to relocate here and build a life--minimal or hard to find fun activities/third places, minimal career opportunities--so people left. There is a long list of closed places that never got replaced (The Dock, Rapids, Minor League Baseball, MetroCenter Mall, etc...) so people kept away "because there's nothing to do".
The people who really like Jackson are a very small minority who try to keep the nice areas afloat but the good areas keep shrinking. They used to include most of NE Jackson, parts of South and Southwest Jackson (before about 1995). Some of the good neighborhoods like Belhaven are tending the wrong direction and are shadows of their former selves. NE and South Jackson have completely declined. Downtown is adequate at best during the day but is mostly dead, functioning as a glorified office park and mostly abaonded at night. It attempted a comeback in the early 2010s but it didn't work. Eastover (gated) and Fondren (but not all of it) have become the last holdouts.
Outside of having to work in the city, the museums, or LeFluers Bulff park, there just isn't a ton of reason to be there. Former assets like the Zoo, Memorial Stadium, Convention Center, and the Coliseum are IMO liabilities. The city is now heavily abandoned and is devoud of investment for renewal. Now no one wants to invest in / fix up property that when finished will be surrounded by blight anyway.
If Detroit can come back, so can Jackson. But I'm not smart enough to know what the catalyst might be.
