“Campbell is the one, whether through his flawed evaluations, the obstacles that Kraft’s missteps presented him, or any combination of the numerous factors that determine the outcome of a college football season, who is dragging Penn State to the bottom. He didn’t find it there and asked to pull it out, but it sounds like that’s what he wants the fanbase to believe.”

But Campbell did inherit a mess. He was hired late and many kids in the program or committed jumped ship. Of course, Campbell was going to bring his assistants and players from iowa state. He knew them and had little time to get others, especially players in numbers. He ended up with a lackluster roster, a mix of iowa state players, Franklin holdovers, and a few from the portal. It was a last-minute hodgepodge. Hardly ideal.

I’m sure Campbell knows that the iowa state players he has now aren’t going to cut it at PSU and in the b1g. He just had little time to do much else.

Let’s see if Campbell can recruit.

What is off the charts ironic is that 100% of his best players are Franklin holdovers - not the players that Campbell recruited and brought over from ISU paying them big $$$ to do so. If he thinks this kind of bs deflection and having all his best players, which again are Franklin holdovers, watch Campbell's scrubs be paid big $$$ and suck while Campbell laughably says he inherited a program that wasn't any good.... he's insane. Say goodbye to Howard..... say goodbye to Zayas........ hard to see Rojas appreciating this bs..... etc., etc., etc......

Big Ten: We're going to make this very simple for Matt Campbell. At Toledo and Iowa State, you can recruit a bunch of guys with three-star talent but five-star hearts, win seven or eight games because you've got a really good culture and get a pat on the head at the end of the season. That's not going to cut it at Penn State. Even the most pessimistic projections of Campbell's first season were not as bad as the reality of being 0-4 in the Big Ten after a 21-18 loss at Michigan. And even if somehow Penn State crushes the soft back end of its schedule to finish 8-4 (which is certainly no guarantee given what we've seen so far), it will mean absolutely nothing other than a scorching hot seat for both Campbell and athletic director Pat Kraft heading into Year 2. Even if you were on board with Penn State firing James Franklin last year amidst a three-game losing streak, nobody signed up for going directly to the bottom of the Big Ten.

Fact is that Campbell had to fill 94 roster spots. 50 kids transferred out....all 29 commitments on the incoming class decommissioned and 15 kid graduate or moved onto the NFL. By contrast, Chesney had to fill 45 roster spots. So Campbell did indeed inherit a mess.
Actually it was 30 players participated in senior day in 2025. Depending upon the source 46 or 47 transferred out. And nearly the entire recruiting class was lost with replacement by a few ISU recruits, who were not of the same quality. CMC was left with practically nothing and had to try and rebuild at the last minute with MAC level players.

I don’t really think the supporting evidence that is provided in the article (Campbell’s quoted remarks) really support the thesis of the article very well. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Nor do I, but you have to consider any author's biased perspective. All articles should be considered as crap until you've researched the author's bio.

He looks like Lucifer after toking.

I didn’t think this was a very good article and all I had to do is see the picture of the guy who wrote it and I could see why. Looks like he works from his parents basement on a DOS based PC.

He’s especially proud of the three block high Lego tower he spent the offseason building.

The Wisconsin and Michigan games were very much winnable, and the USC not totally out of reach.

Some of the negatives that were out of Campbell's control or not even aware of worked against him or tipped the balance towards the negative result.

I have no issue with him claiming to be building a foundation, although to the fan base that foundation may be seem to b returning to some of the things the program had not long ago.

I like his emphasis on understanding how players and recruits handle adversity...it may be part of why he is choosing to stick with Rocco at QB.
In all three of those losses, Wisconsin, Michigan, and USC, a little better reaction to adversity could have been the difference, and a record with one or even two losses removes a lot of the discussion and other negative side effects.

Actually, it was around 61 spots - but the gist remains that it was a **** ton of new faces.
(Your number of "new spots to fill" (94) is overstated in large part because PSU was WAY over the 105 going into the 2026 offseason, and a bunch had to be processed - not replaced - one way or the other no matter what - and that was obviously part of the plan of the old staff)

The actual new spots that had to be filled by Campbell and staff was:

15 High School commits by "signing day" - of which 14 were "new guys" (only 1 existing commit stayed on board). Plus another 7 freshmen who were not part of the signing day list.
So 21 of them in total.

Plus 40 Transfers in from other programs.

Those numbers might be off by 1 or 2, but not more than that.

Nearly every "article" cited by fans as evidence of something - good or bad, is now written by someone who has no more knowledge than my cat (who watches the occasional game, but is far from an expert :) )
