Insight to Iowans....

Having been born and bred a Hawkeye through and through, and then relocating to Jackson, MS for a little over 4 years I think I may have a bit of insight for those of you who don't really know what to expect from the sea of Black & Gold on January 1st. So a little bit for both sides:

To MSU crowd:
  • Iowans don't care much about what others think of them personally (although they do constantly carry around a chip on their shoulders about how the "outside world" - that being anybody from outside of the B1G footprint views the Hawkeyes). So don't expect them to show up well dressed or trying to act 'proper'.
  • Expect T-shirts and hooded sweatshirts to outnumber polos and dresses.
  • Busch Light and Natty Ice will be in abundance
  • And no, they won't care that it is only 7 or 8 in the morning when they begin the tailgating, they will be out in force boozing it up prior to the game
  • They will be friendly (genuinely so), but of course part of being friendly is seen as good natured ribbing.... try to remember there is nothing mean-spirited about it, we love a good back and forth. If people get defensive quickly, Iowans won't want to waste much more time around them.
  • Iowans are NOT Yankees..... it took me a year or two to figure out what exactly you guys called a Yankee. Of course, we are located north of 25, so by geography of course we are (LOL). However, Iowans despise the East Coast, Northeast, Eastern plains bullspit. Very blue collar crowd for the most part, with the exception of the small percentage of those from immediately around the Iowa City area where the liberalism of campus has infected the yuppy-wannabe-types.
  • Mississippians and Iowans, I have found, are much more alike than we are different. Rural states, overlooked by most, snubbed by most, but "heart and soul of the nation" types of folks.

To my Iowa Brethren:
  • Expect polo shirts and dresses on gameday.... I know, its weird
  • "Bless your heart" is not necessarily a good thing to hear from them
  • Get over the cowbells.... they "ring responsibly"
  • Be good natured with the ribbing, folks from the South tend to get defensive quicker than us
  • "Coon-***" is not a racially derogative thing.
  • If a MSU tailgate offers you oysters.... TAKE THEM UP ON IT. Trust me, its a completely different experience than that gelatonous crap our parents make oyster stew out of. Charbroiled oysters are a thing of art in Mississippi
  • Even if the Dawgs are blowing out the Hawkeyes in the 4th quarter, a single good play from the Hawks, or a penalty against the Dawgs will send the MSU faithful into full panic/meltdown mode.... apparently they have had some rough luck with 4th quarter endings over the years. The A&M game I went to in 2014, MSU was winning by a substantial margin and A&M had a big play. I asked my buddy why the crowd was so damned quiet, and in unison he and his son both replied "We've seen this movie far too many times"
  • Mississippians are good people, except of course Southern Miss fans, those Tigerhawk stealing jerks

Allow me to add a little detail from a MS perspective.

To my Iowa Brethren:

  • Expect polo shirts and dresses on gameday.... I know, its weird. That's more an Ole Miss thing. They're the pricks that time forgot. Some of us will and some of us will be at the game wearing overalls and camoflauge. Sometimes at the same time.
  • "Bless your heart" is not necessarily a good thing to hear from them Indeed it is not.
  • Get over the cowbells.... they "ring responsibly"Yeah, sure, of course. Responsible. All the time.
  • Be good natured with the ribbing, folks from the South tend to get defensive quicker than us If we know it is football related and ribbing thne we are good and most can give as well as take. As soon we we thing it is a knock on being from MS, Southern, or against MSU then we have a saying...A Southerner will be nice until he's mad enough to kill you.
  • "Coon-***" is not a racially derogative thing. That term is normally reserved for southern LA cajuns
  • If a MSU tailgate offers you oysters.... TAKE THEM UP ON IT. Trust me, its a completely different experience than that gelatonous crap our parents make oyster stew out of. Charbroiled oysters are a thing of art in Mississippi I'd confirm they are actually oysters that came from the ocean.
I asked my buddy why the crowd was so damned quiet, and in unison he and his son both replied "We've seen this movie far too many times We have seen it too many times, but we also want to dominate every play of every game. Weakness is not allowed.
  • Mississippians are good people, except of course Southern Miss fans, those Tigerhawk stealing jerks Throw in Ole Miss. They are the absolute worst. They've been described as Alabama arrogance with Vanderbilt's trophy case.

Great stuff.
I'll add some to the chip on their shoulder part. Iowa fans won't want to admit it, but some sure have a little bit of an inferiority complex. They think Iowa football doesn't get the respect they should.
Well, I say we certainly do get the respect we should!
I'd say most football fans see Iowa football as:
a good brand, tough, well coached football team who often times is pretty dang good especially at their place in Kinnick. Oh yeah, with a huge fan base.

Is that so bad?

I was pretty shocked, however, to find out that some Iowa fans view this matchup as "beneath" them. Where the heck does that kind of arrogance come from?

Not sure.
I really can't say this echoes what the majority of Iowa fans think, either.
The only thing I can see is maybe some Iowa fans are disappointed in going back to Tampa again?

My thoughts exactly. Perfect example was the play clock expiring in the 4Q of the Ole Miss game on that TD. Every MSU fan thought that play would stand, we lose our DBs and Ole Miss may come back and win or we would have had to held on for dear life.

To sum up, Iowans generally are or are descendants of hard working farm folk.

Ya'll really aren't that different from us then. Most of the rest of the country thinks we're all backwards and dumber than a box of rocks thanks to our glorious media. Personally I don't give a crap what everybody else thinks. I will admit though that a lot us do have an inferiority complex thanks once again to our national media. I'm looking forward to playing ya'll and look for a good game. Americans are americans and we love our football.

Just remember that the message board crowd (I know mainly the Rivals one) are very indicative of the majority of Hawkeye fans, just like any other fanbase really. You DO, indeed, have those that for some reason believe that because we win more than we lose, that we should be considered among the elites of college football, and that we are somehow on par with the Bama's and Ohio States of the world that are (at least in this era) perpetually in the limelight. However, anybody.... no matter what part of the country you are in, should realize that MSU (especially since the Mullen era - present) has been more than respectable, and in no fathomable way "below" the Hawks. In fact, if I was a betting man, I'd have to pick the Dawgs right now. ON the other side, Hawks are a bit of a neurotic bunch. Some games they can show up and play like world-beaters and completely shock the hell out of the opponent. Other times, they underperform to the dismay of all. This year's team hasn't had the consistency we are used to seeing from Ferentz-coached teams.

(and to the original point.... remember that many of the posters on the rivals board are college kids or Hawkeye grads in their 20's to 30's. They have that millenial, ignorant thing going for them where they buy into their liberal professors' mantra that all from the south are racist and ignorant, and when it comes to sports, they only know their school and Bama)

It comes from the fact that University of Iowa fans are the Ole Miss fans of Iowa. Having Iowa State family I can tell you that Iowa State is more like us. The idea that these are two similar fan bases is just plain wrong. The arrogance also comes from the same place it does with Ole Miss fans, they simply think they are better.

I love this week these Iowa fans are all over sixpack trying to tell us about them. That in itself shows arrogance. The only thing that I want to learn or know about Iowa fans is the final score of the Outback Bowl after we whip their ***.

As for the guy that started this post, please just stop with the whole beer comparisons and that you guys are not Yankees. Sure some of your fan base might be a little country, but you know and I know you guys are very similar to Ole Miss fans. For the state fans on this board if want to know about a school in Iowa that ACTUALLY is like us then learn about Iowa State.

Two things:

Hawks Bulldogs are a bit of a neurotic bunch. Some games they can show up and play like world-beaters and completely shock the hell out of the opponent. Other times, they underperform to the dismay of all. This year's team hasn't had the consistency we are used to seeing from Ferentz Mullen-coached teams.

That sums us up very well.

Also, the same sentiment someone expressed above about "bless your heart" applies when dawgstudent posts "thanks for reading" on Sixpack.

So how do you feel about Iowa fans who also root for Iowa State?

It's not the same as MSU/Ole Miss because there is a lot of crossover cheering that goes on. What I will say is that there are a lot of Iowa grads who aren't from the state of Iowa (mostly Chicago), but native Iowans by and large (both Hawkeyes and Cyclones) are similar people.

So you speak for all people from Iowa? In that case then let me apologize I did not realize I was speaking to such an important person. Again, an entire family of several generations of Iowa State fans and graduates will them me something completely different. Hell what would they know, they are just from Guthrie Center and all went to Iowa State. Hell my wife’s Uncle, went to ISU and lives in Guthrie Center, told me “son y’all are playing the Ole Miss of Iowa”. Again, what does he really know only lived in the state his entire life and sent all of his kids to ISU.

After all this I did a little investigation of my own, you know us Mississippi folk can learn about things when we want to. Don’t you think if MSU fans really needed to know anything about you guys then we could figure it out for ourselves? Again, that shows arrogance to just assume that you need to tell us.

What I found from reading the Iowa message boards is that you guys believe this game and our program are beneath you. Now of course nothing could be farther from the truth as you guys play in a joke of conference known as the Big Ten. The other truth is after we destroy you guys none of this really matter anyway.

Again, nice job trying to pretend that you guys and state fans have things in common. If I want to hang with people that are like my kind I will stick with ISU.

Last thing I will say, please just leave our message boards, if us country state folk want to know anything about you guys then we will ask. Until that happens please stop feeling the need to tell us. The ONLY thing that state fans need to know about you guys is where the best bars are at in Tampa after we stomp that ***.

Well, maybe ....... one way or the other, but I had it explained to me a bit differently. Either way, don't lump us in with east coast, west coast or Chicago. There are 2 very distinct "districts" in Iowa.... you have the Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Falls triangle that kinda leans white collar-liberal, and the rest that is much more blue collar, country, conservative types.

I think what is getting confused here is the likeness of the Universities as opposed to the fanbases: From the standpoint of the Universities, yes, Iowa would be more like Ole Miss (Liberal Arts based, Med School, Law School, etc. vs. agriculture, engineering, etc.). I don't see it in the fanbases though.

It's definitely a credit to the Mississippi State fanbase that it took this long to find our first *******. Congrats!
