What has happened in the last 30 years for a position to swing this wildly in the Democratic Party? I understand this is one person but this was a relatively common stance amongst democrats not that long ago. Has something actually changed with the laws or is this purely a matter of changing position for political reasons? Im genuinely curious as most of the arguments made by folks on the right think this change in position was to increase democrat voters.

Not an expert but I can give you how I feel about the situation:

Diversity: I strongly believe in diversity of thought, opinion, race and background as a means to success. It creates better outcomes in almost every context.
Immigrants: I want more immigrants to come to the states, and I think it's beneficial for us as a country to have immigrants come.
Undocumented/illegal Immigrants: Every single undocumented immigrant I have met has benefitted me, from services, to jobs, to interactions. They have all been positive.
No fear of other: I don't have any fear mongering about what illegal immigrants are "coming here to do." It's been overblown that they are just a suck on the economy, and they only bring drugs/guns over when they come.

Unfortunately most of the anti-immigrants/anti-illegal immigrant rhetoric (since Trump started campaigning in 2015) seems xenophobic and racist. I know those are trigger words for MAGA folks and I'll sound like a dumb lib bot, but that's simply what it comes down to.

I don't think illegal immigration is a big deal at all.

So you disagree with Mayor Adams of NYC and Mayor Johnson of Chicago who say it is a very big problem?

Bury your head in the sand.

I honestly think much of this could be fixed if we would just find a way to make an easier pathway for those undocumented immigrant's already here.

Then, sure, shut down the border unless they go through a process to be allowed into the country.

I also have had very positive interactions with immigrants, so it is a bit shocking to see the characterization of immigrants as only brining drugs, raping people etc. most I've ever met are just trying to escape abject poverty or to escape gang violence. Those are exactly the people we should want coming to America.

It's like a lot of stuff, again, from both sides, they highlight individual cases that make the point they want to make, and then magnify it and basically equate everyone that way.

So are you saying that the old democrats from just a couple decades ago were racist nationalists? My post was a question about the shift from democrats, not interested in the Trump diatribe. Also doesn’t what Schumer says in that clip sound a lot like Trump now, so how’d did it just start on his campaign 10 years ago?

Yeah almost every single one I've interacted with, which is tons, just want to make money and send it back to their family. No problem with that

Lol idgaf about ThE dEmOcRaTs and how they've lied. Politicians are the biggest liars, and our 2 party system is ****. I don't even like the Democratic Party, and only vote that way out of necessity. I too hate virtue signaling.

I was just saying my personal opinion, sorry for partying big guy.

I think there is a difference in the type of rhetoric being used today. Trump is certainly xenophobic and his descriptions of immigrants is pretty racist.

Again, if they are here illegally, make sure that's the case, make sure that they aren't already legally supposed/allowed to be here. Give them a hearing to confirm and then deport. I'm fine with that.

I am not fine with racism.

It's different when you are in charge. Clown

You are the biggest hypocrite on this board.

None of your arguments can keep logical consistency.

It's all about you and your feelings. Which way the wind blows.

Thats what democrats believe though. They think there is a "smart" group of people that know better than the rest. Yoshi is a shining example of why that is a bad way to govern. You get morons in charge. Like Joe, Kammy and AOC.

So Far we have

Obama
Bill Clinton
Hillary Clinton
Chuck Shumer
Nancy Pelosi
Amy Klobuchar
Harry Reid
Bernie Sanders

All with the same immigration stance as Trump. But NOW democrats have a problem with it? What a bunch of clowns

You have morons like @UrHuckleberry screaming about due process, but the illegals ignored due process when they invaded our country. They want to slow the wheels of justice so that the illegals can voting rights.

I used to be a moderate on immigration. But after seeing the democratic justices actively working to undermine the will of the people my pain tolerance just got a lot higher. I am all for the largest deportation force in history and taking our country back from the hypocrites.

Again, someone is spinning out of control.

Show an example of my "hypocrisy"

I think it's pretty plain to most on here that I'm not the clown Ole Fastball. I'm also not the one insulting people or calling them names.

This is just another scenario, like with transgender stuff, that most people on both sides of the aisle are in agreement.
A major issue is that there's a checks and balance process, much of what's happening today (beyond just immigration actions) are circumventing the courts.

But in general, the reason you're seeing so many older videos of Democratic leaders also talking about border control is that again, most people believe it's an important thing. How the administration is going about doing it is where you can have fair debates one way or another.

Exactly. And honestly that's the position I've seen taken by all the non-MAGAa on the board. I also haven't seen any trying to defend the Biden Admin for not doing more earlier. It was a failure and cost them.

How pathetic. No one wanted to do it the easy way, so we have to do it the hard way.

No more drivers licenses.

Squuuueeeeze them out.

Must speak English. No Drivers license. Permanent ban from the country.

Self deportation numbers rising by the day.

Didn’t want to do it the easy way and cooperate, so now we do it the hard way.

Habeus corpus suspension incoming.

Thanks for the honest answer. I’m not really concerned about this administrations stance, I know it.

What I’m curious about is what caused this drastic shift in the democratic party. We know it’s not purely altruistic, there’s a reason that they’ve collectively flipped positions here and I’m curious what that driving factor was. There’s a deeper reason, as mentioned some on the right feel it could be importation of voters, idk but I find it incredibly interesting. It’s a huge shift in a very short amount of time. To the point that the very person speaking in my OP is gloating on the house floor about killing the SAVE act today! The very same person. It’s astonishing to me. So what happened?

Sometimes I feel like you just started following politics- These 2 parties flip flop all the time on things. Obama wasn't pro gay marriage when he ran, because he wouldn't have won if he was. They flip and flop all the damn time according to the culture and their base.

Remember when Republicans were the party of "Small Government?" I was a political Science major decades ago at Clemson, and that was THE calling card of the Republican Party. Now MAGA doesn't gaf about small government (even if they give lip service) and the amount of federal government/big government/executive orders issued by the FEDERAL government by MAGA/TRUMP is astounding. MAGA doesn't even claim to be traditionally Republican, its its "own thing" and yet all Republicans are falling in line, and disregarding what has always made them, well, republicans.

Politicians pick and choose their spots, according to their base and on their read of culture. That's why the overton window is always changing.

Quit believing them. Trump and his ilk are pieces of **** just fyi

I don't think illegal immigration is a big deal at all.
IT does present a security risk that has to be controlled IMHO.

Which just adds to the risks already within our borders.

It seems like most things where polar opposites exist with hard line belief on both sides.

Sure, can get behind that in theory. And in practice. And logically, I agree.

It's just never been so much of a problem that I have EVER experienced any risk associated with it, and I've interacted with hundreds of illegal immigrants. And I grew up Lower-Middle/Middle Class in the deep south.

All South Americans I have any experience with have been hard workers, do good work, have been considered to be trust worthy and courteous.

My only problems may be some communication limitations

There may be sides to this I just can't relate to.

It is a lot harder to deal with, but the trends in climate change and changes in our approach to health worry me a lot more than immigration
