We'll see if the friendship and mentorship he and Cal share win out in the end!
Could be just a ploy by antigua to get a fatter contract from illinois ala lute olsen.
He would become public enemy #1 if this is true.
I’m not worried one bit though. We all expect him to come but if he doesn’t, Calipari will fill the spots with top quality coaches and recruiters.
Or the other way, hold out for a counter offer, tell UK, UK matches or exceeds and you get more than you would have if you pulled the trigger on the job immediately.
No way Illinois could out bid UK, unless UK thinks the amount is just so far out of bounds.
Use the money we saved from not paying the top recruits to come here.

It would be nice if O already told Cal he's coming and this is just finalizing terms. I can't see Cal sending Barbee and Justus off if it wasn't and it's no coincidence they both moe on after this horrible season and all the heat. TC a horrible tragedy, but horrible timing as I am sure the last thing Cal wants to discuss is money. Either O wants to be here or he doesn't.

I'm not sure how Cal gets back into recruiting and finishing the staff negotiations with what has to be a really sad heart. I mean I know he will get back to it, but I'm sure this dampens the flames a little bit. The guy is human and it would for anyone.

I think Illinois has more money but I could be wrong.
Per the 2018-19 athletic department revenues, UK ranked 15th in the nation with $150.4 million in revenue vs $145 million in expenses for a roughly $5.4 million profit.
Illinois ranked 29th with $118.6 million in revenue vs $120.2 million in expenses for a roughly $1.6 million dollar loss.
Ranked #1 most valuable program in 2019-20 according to Forbes 3 year average revenue. Consistently #1 or 2 over 5 years. Illinois is #10 and not even half of net revenue. I would say Kentucky has the money to handle it.
I don't think that you are wrong, but I doubt that they would be willing to spend as much on a basketball coach as Kentucky would
Whether Antigua comes to UK I have no idea. But I can’t imagine UK not out bidding Illinois if it comes down to that.
I don't really know who has more money, but I just want to point out that very little of Cal's salary is paid by UKAA. Most of it is paid by third parties. I don't know how the salaries of the assistant coaches work, but I wouldn't necessarily assume that UKAA would be paying all of the salary. When you bring in outside parties that pay a portion of the salary, who knows which school could afford to pay more.
Oh ok cool. I was thinking in terms of endowments but I guess that money can’t be used for paying coaches.
I hope he’s wrong. If he does stay at Illinois then it’s not a good look to make room on your staff and end up empty handed in my opinion. Antigua is perfect hire for Cal right now since they are familiar with one another and he knows what it takes to do the job at UK
I doubt Cal would let 2 of his coaches go, if he didn't have an assurance that Coach O was coming. I believe that the Illini is appeasing its fanbase by "counter offering". I believe in the end Coach O will be in Lexington next season.
That's a very surprising offer. A lot more than I expected Illinois to be able or willing to shell out. We'll see if UK/Barnhart are willing to step up.
Totally agree. If O doesn't end up at UK it will be ugly (less ugly because of yesterday) for Cal.
This guy was pretty insistent that he is being told Illinois' offer is significant enough that O will be staying.
Yep. I can't find assistant salary info but Payne was the highest at $900k last year. So O would be the highest by $300-500k....that's crazy! It would be higher than all but 65 HEAD COACHES salaries.
KP was making $900K and Vince Marrow is making the same. Let's see how high they will go for OA. I can't see UK getting outbid by Illinois. I wonder what the price tag is for Chin if he is indeed coming to UK.
If he does stay, Cal can find another just as good. I’d prefer Antigua, but coaches would be lining up to be an assistant at Kentucky.
I said I prefer him but it’s not the end of the world if he doesn’t. I trust Cal to hire the right people.

It might be that the UK administration tells Cal that they'll pay whatever is necessary for Antigua but, Coleman might be a no-go if his price is too high.
Not saying UK couldn't afford to pay whatever it would take to get both but, I'm sure there is a limit. Can't just hand out blank checks.
If he isn’t hired then he should have just kept Justice instead of shipping him off to another school. And to be honest looks really bad that you get rid of two assistants and can’t pull the one assistant you are after.

Justus - $300,000
Bruiser - $500,000
Lucas - $275,000
Here are current Illinois salaries:
Coach O - $475,000
Coleman - $315,000
Gentry - $315,000
As much as the program brings in each year, I agree, pay the man. I do believe the return will be worth it.
Cal didn’t let any coaches go. One left to be a head coach and the other promoted to higher level assistant coach.
