All players you listed had much better freshmen seasons than IQ.
Again, what you do in college has very little bearing on getting drafted in a lot of cases.
Remember Skal? Remember his one season here? Remember where he got drafted?
What did Diallo ever do here? What did Orton do? Wenyen? Briscoe?
Yeah, they entered college, but they got exposed at UK for being bigger guards that didn't have the athletesism or quickness you need to be an NBA guard. Where are they now?
I'd sell my soul to get Quickley back a 3rd hear but if he does leave (especially if he doesnt cool down from shooting) we will be fine.

Skal entered UK as a probable top 5 pick.
He slipped a lot but still stayed in first.
He was also 7feet tall.
IQ did not come to UK as a projected first rounder and did nothing last year to change minds.
Aaron Andrew and Lamb were all 6'5 and weighed at least 210.Teague should have returned but I wouldn't want to replay the 2012 season with IQ as my frosh PG.
Why are you so hung op on where these kids were in the mock drafts before they got to UK? Why do you think that matters?

That crap doesn’t matter. Yeah, Skal was a 7 footer, but he absolutely stunk it up at UK.
You may not want to hear this, but the fact that he is playing at UK makes a huge difference. If he was playing at Arkansas or Tennessee, I would definitely not say Quickly would be gone after this year, but you have to consider what we have seen the last 10 years. We have had soooo many kids leave that weren't on draft boards or were on draft boards, but were not ready to sustain an NBA career.
UK sells these players to the NBA. That's what these pro days are all about and guess what, it's working. UK and the NBA are tied at the hip.
But I hope you are right. Quickly is probably the guy that makes me the happiest on this team. He has a great attitude, plays hard and appears to like UK.
But it's not easy to play here. The workouts are pretty extreme, the pressure is high, Jerry is creepy and there's that hole going to class thing.
Exactly. That's why EJ almost left last year after not accomplishing anything his Fr year. It's probably why Whitney will have a decision to make in May even though he's given us very little this year.

If you’re saying IQ will leave regardless of draft input and/or Cal’s advice you could be right. I don’t think it’s a given. Lots of factors including how a guy likes classes and being in college.
If his goal is to get some money ASAP then maybe he leaves. I predict he returns unless he gets some kind of guarantee from an NBA team.
Because the higher you enter the greater the likely hood of you NOT being able to "play" your way out of the first round.
Little from UNC is a perfect example.
He entered college right up there with Zion and RJ but didn't perform nearly as well

IQ has a great opportunity next year as Askew doesn't project to be a "beast" PG that Cunningham may have been.
IQ has a legit shot to win the starting job at PG and that could really impact his stock
How many thought Herro was going to be gone after one year. I know IQ has been here 2 years but I will not be surprised if left after this year.
you’re both right imo. i think people can see his ceiling as an offensive player. but if you can shoot and play defense there will be a pro career somewhere waiting. now that he’s been scoring 15 a game you start to get a little buzz and if i had to guess like you guys it’s probably a tossup. i think he should come back and develop his passing and scoring off the dribble. that would all but guarantee him an nba career imo.
Wait a minute. Doron couldn’t lock down defend the way quickley can. Doron lamb never had the handles or vision to have a thread in his honor of whether he’s going to be a pg. doron lamb could not drive the ball like quickley. I don’t remember doron lamb as good from the line as quickley.
I love what doron lamb brought for UK but he was a shooter no more than that honestly. To think quickley is a doron lamb does not compute. Quickley Imo is more versatile than herro. If he ends the season with us on a run and he’s averaging 20 down the stretch he is gone. He will be taken in the first round by a team looking for a pg.

We all know Quickly wasn’t on any pre college NBA draft boards, but that has zilch to do with Quickly going pro after this season. You said it yourself, Herro and Shai played themselves into the first round regardless of where they were (or weren’t) prior to coming to UK.
This is UK, there is no other program like UK. Duke is close, but that coaching staff actually tries to retain players. At UK, these kids are groomed for the NBA and the culture we have in place is very NBA farm system-ish. We have lost too many non NBA ready kids to the NBA (short stay), G-League and overseas to sit here in January and say for certain that a very talented SOPHOMORE is definitely going to come back.
The way things go here, you might want to assume players are going to leave and be surprised when they stay.
Vanderbilt is another one. He couldn't even hit a 2' jump ****. I've never seen anything like it, he literally didn’t know how to hold the ball to shoot it, but he left after a half a season.
I bet you can count on one hand how many kids, that were recruited buy Cal, stayed more than 2 years after being a major contributor the first two seasons here.
Richards is one, WCS (injury) is one, Poythress (injury) is another. There just aren't many.
Doron had a lot better freshmen year plus went to a FF and won a championship.
He still was a late second rounder..
IQ and Doron are different players but IQ is not better.
Oh yeah, there are a lot of variables that are in play here. But all these kids have done their homework. They know they have a shelf life. The NBA, especially when it comes to guards, wants those 18/19 year old athletic guys that have potential. They don’t want the 23 year old college seniors, they're thinking, "why is this kid still in college"?
I would be ecstatic if Quickly came back, he would be a huge ingredient needed for a title run. I won't even allow myself to think about it at this point. We have been burned by so many kids that underachieved in college, weren't on any draft boards, but left anyway.
When you organize NBA pro day events and pump the NBA the way our coaches do, you won't be hanging on to too many kids. They come here to go pro quickly when you create that kind of environment.
You’re just looking at Lamb's offensive production. He never rebounded or defended like Quickly does.
Totally agree that our track record doesn't support him returning.
There's just something about a freshman that the NBA is enamored with.
Orton, Vanderbilt,Teague, Goodwin Skal all used this to their advantage.
They don't seem to be nearly as intrigued by sophs.
I remember Lamb running the point when Knight was out.
Can't really say how he rebounded without looking it up.
He was 6'5 210
He barely got drafted after a championship year.
Don't know how IQ would fare if he were thrust into Ashton's role.
And forget Juzang. Another year will be huge for him.
(frankly I don't like this reclass thing. Regular one & dones have problems adjusting to the college game, and having kids that should be enjoying their senior year of high school is only exasperating the problem of youth trying to compete against full grown JR and senior college players.)

All those dudes left early. There would be no NIT in 2013 if Teague and Lamb return. DJ was the missing cog we needed in 16 and wow, Orton on our 2011 team would have been awesome.
We keep running a young roster out there every year and most of the time it's because dudes leave way before they were ready to go. Cal didn’t push them out, they made their own decisions, but most of those players were never here for UK, they were here because this is an NBA farm system.
Now, I get the feeling that Quickly likes it at UK, he's invested in the program, but he also has dreams of playing in the NBA. So it'll be interesting.
I think both players are comparable as far as the group that they are in. They're both good guards that can shoot. But neither is an athletic freak, so all you can do is hope that Quickly's family sees what happened with Lamb and make the best decision.
One other thing to note though. This is an extremely down year in college basketball. There really aren't any transcendent players, just a lot of good players. So if Quickly has a big NCAAT, it might be in his best interest to leave.

Teague has always been my number one because he knew that Harrow wasn't in his league.

You gotta back up your claim with something more. Like I said handles and vision IQ by far, shooting even maybe a slight edge to IQ bc of free throw percentages, athleticism/ability to drive the ball IQ by far again.
IQ is a much more dynamic player he has lottery pick potential. If herro can go lottery i don’t see why IQ can’t become that level player albeit a bit different in that he can run the point.
Come on man, I am a huge UK homer, but the reality is IQ is at best a fringe second rounder. Hagans, who is the starting PG is a fringe first rounder. IQ is a very good college player, let’s leave it at that. Back to the question, I think Cal will not recruit another guard.
Doesn't matter if he's a fringe first or second rounder. Briscoe, Vanderbilt, the twins, Teague, Lamb etc… all proved that it just doesn't matter.
How in love with college are these guys? They all want to play ball for a living, but in college, these kids have to go to class and they have practice restrictions.
Going to the G-League or overseas allows them to work with pro coaches 24/7 AND get paid. It sucks, but it's the truth.

Oh hell no. Quickly is nowhere close to the lottery. But even if he's a 2nd round pick, he still might go. He might as well get paid to play instead of going to class and playing for free.

Apparently ESPN(Giovanny) doesn't have IQ as a top 100 prospect.
That seems waay low but some say he is the only draft guy you should pay attention to.
I do believe that scouts go tone deaf in regards to certain players as in "I've already evaluated player x and I don't need to re-evaluate"
I remember a scout being asked if he had seen Bogans during his senior year and he replied he had not and had no plans to do so because he had already been evaluated.
Still no way there's 100 better players than IQ.
Well, maybe Quickly will be that Ultra rare unicorn, which is a 5* star guard that plays big important minutes from Freshman year on and stays 4 years in the Calipari era.

I bet it doesn't happen though. If he's not NBA material now, staying 2 more years won’t change that. He might as well get paid to play G-League ball and work with coaches 24/7 instead of on a restricted basis.
The only dudes that stay 4 years here are the ones that have no career beyond college, were 4 star players that sat behind stars their first 2 or 3 years (Willis and Hawkins) or big guys like WCS and Richards that were very raw when they came to UK. Bigs are in a different situation than guards and forwards.
I would love to see a guy like Quickly stay 4 years, I just don't see a guy with his abilities and star rating, turning money down to play at UK for free and go through seal training every year (Cal works these guys hard).
How many of those guys can shut down nwora too though? There are way more than 50 guards shooting better than maxey right now too but a lot less than 50 guards better than him
Quickly is gone until someone convinces him otherwise. His dream is to play in the NBA and he wont get any more attractive to the NBA than he is now. He's better than Lamb overall and has a much better shot at staying in the league as well.
