Life has unfortunately put me in social contact with a few Duke fans. Please ONLY give me facts, with PROOF, about Duke Bball and recruiting. ( ie. Duhon, Thomas, Maggette, Bagely, Williamson, etc) Thanks. Again, substanciated facts ONLY.
Obviously you won't find any facts with proof about Duke cheating; if it was out there... like, actual facts with proof... Duke would have gotten in trouble. The same is true with nearly every program.
Traditionally people go after Duke for a few stories.
One is the Duhon one; namely, that Duhon's mother got a job as part of his agreeing to attend Duke. There aren't really any facts or proof there... Duhon's mom got a job in the field she was working in. Some people say that she wasn't qualified or whathaveyou, but that all comes from that single article that was linked earlier, and one or two sources... an article which also paints owning a Nissan Altima and a decade old SUV as a possible issue, so it may not be entirely on the up and up. I've never seen anything more about it. Not a good look, for sure, but not facts or proof.
The Maggette thing didn't have anything really to do with Duke; at no point did anyone suspect Duke of doing anything involving it. The NCAA had other players who got wrapped up in the same situation and had to sit a few games. They said that that was not a possible option with Duke since Maggette was already gone, and that wiping all the games out would be both over-the-top and inconsistent with what they had done with the other players. It really has nothing to do with Duke, and was consistent with how the NCAA has treated these sorts of things over the years (for example, John Wall sitting a game or two because of... what was it, a plane ticket?)
The Lance Thomas one is one that looks bad, but again, you won't find anything close to proof or substantiated information. Thomas went to a NYC jewelry store when the team was on a trip there and spent 100k on some REALLY ugly jewelry. Or more accurately he spent 30k, and then the other 70k was a "loan" from the store. The store then said he defaulted on it. That's it; nobody involved has talked about it openly. It would be odd for this to involve Duke; he wasn't a recruit when this happened, but a senior, and it happened many states away from campus and in a store with no obvious Duke connections, to it is unlikely that the staff organized this as some free payoff or whatever. The more likely scenario is that he got the loan based on his potential future earnings as an NBA player, although at the time NOBODY thought Lance Thomas would play professional ball anywhere other than possible Tibet. This would create a situation where he was ineligible. But again, you won't find "proof" or anything like that.
I admit I don't know a lot about the Zion thing... something about a house. Everyone seems to have some story settled upon. Until an actual reporter gets on it, rather than some random message board poster, I'd treat that as a bit suspicious.
So yeah, you aren't going to find what you want.
(Having said that... as a Duke guy, I am sure the program is dirty in SOME way... to me, the Duhon story, for example, seems very likely to have been some improper setup. But I also am a person who thinks that EVERY program, unfortunately, works this way... when there are billions of dollars involved, that happens. Fingers crossed that I am wrong!)
