Well, in fairness, my experience is sociology is perceived that way at pretty much every large university. Seriously, has anyone ever taken a hard sociology class?

Your link does not really describe an analogous situation to the UNC/AFAM thing. It merely says they were taking "easy" classes ...well, there's nothing surprising about that, nearly every big school has those designated "jock classes" disproportionately filled by athletes for their easiness. But the UNC/AFAM scandal was not about the paper courses merely being easy, instead it's that they were not real classes at all.

Of course UNC took it to a whole other level, and there was never an accusation of a Deborah Crowder type at Duke who was changing grades and such. But my point is that both of these supposedly academically superior institutions made sure their star basketball players majored in the easiest thing possible, a major that attracted few if any non-athletes. "The Duke Way" and "The Carolina Way" were both jokes.

There was an entire ESPN Outside The Lines episode about it, which that article referred to. I remember it well. Almost no non-athletes in those days went to Duke to major in sociology. Most of the classes were filled with athletes.

Look, every college with a sports program has its "rocks for jocks" classes. But not every one holds itself up as sanctimoniously as Duke does (and UNC did) and pretend it is something special academically.

Hm, looking at this breakdown of degrees at Duke...

https://www.collegeraptor.com/colleges/majors/Duke-University-NC--198419

... sociology seems to be about as popular as anatomy or environmental studies, and more popular than chemistry, English language, or History.

Now, I am not surprised at ALL if the major sports teams have fewer engineering folks and more "soft sciences" folks (although there have been ball players who were in engineering and such) compared to the student body in general... the Duke student body is a very specific group, and there is no great surprise that Public Policy and Econ and Biology and CPS are more popular, given the type of people those degrees attract. I haven't seen anything that indicates that sociology is a sham degree, though, or anything that indicates that Duke athletes aren't also being held to certain standards as students. As I said, in my personal experience, the opposite is true.

I have to say, I don't think of Duke holding itself up as *particularly* sanctimoniously, when compared to other comparable academic institutions, except in that Duke athletics are far more successful than those comparable academic institutions. I DO think that Duke values the education part of it student-athlete more than SOME schools that are as famous for athletics but not for academics; I mean, just look at Duke's basketball APR scores over the years... it is usually very high, especially compared to some less academically-oriented schools. And obviously there is a level of rigor across Duke classes that is likely a bit higher than at some universities. My guess is that there is an approach that Duke athletics takes towards academics that might not be the same as, say, the approach at South Carolina, but I wouldn't know about S.C.... I can only speak for Duke.

BTW, about classes not at Duke yet still getting credit; that is common. I took two science courses at a local community school between my freshman and sophomore year because... well, because I took some science classes at Duke and they whipped my ***, so I figured I'd get a few credits in a much easier environment. It was pretty simple, and my grades were noticeably different. This isn't uncommon, and it certainly wouldn't be difficult for a basketball player to do a few hours of work a week, which is all that classes really require at MOST... and that's if you want an A.

And btw, UNC STILL holds itself up as some paradigm of education. Such is the delusion of UNC folks.

Anyway, not really here nor there. There isn't really going to be factual information about Duke cheating, just as there isn't factual information about nearly any school cheating. If you hate Duke, you'll likely see stories and assume that there are clear malfeasances... if you like Duke, you'll likely see stories blown out of proportion and assumptions being made.

Well, he did not say it was popular with the general student body, only with the basketball players. Your chart does nothing to disprove that.

One little observation. My experience has been that sociology majors are usually female, but at Duke it appears 63 percent are male. Gee, I wonder why that is ...how many of that 63 percent do you suppose are basketball/football players?

Sociology is a "hot" major nowadays for kids interested in "social justice" and "intersectionality." In the early 2000s that was not the case. These were the years that ESPN looked into. Kids went to Duke in those days primarily to get STEM degrees that would lead to high paying jobs, or to medical/law school. It's a very difficult school to get admitted to and an even more difficult one to pay for....unless you play basketball.

FYI

A BA in Sociology may have concentrations in Criminal Justice, Criminology etc.., some schools may not offer degrees in the aforementioned disciplines or at least this was the case when I graduated 18 years ago from my recollection.

Just curious if as a student at Duke you would have been able to buy 100K in jewelry? That seems like a benefit that an average student wouldn't have been able afforded. Now we will never know the full details of this since the NCAA basically told Duke to not talk and they could do nothing to which the Devils and jeweler clammed up and nothing came up. Now does that mean there isn't any information? Maybe from a technical stand point but people aren't stupid.

Creed -- I understand where you are trying to go with this argument. We are talking Lance Thomas -- correct? Did anyone think that Lance would be in the NBA? His senior year he averaged 4.8 points per game. Let that sink in. Are you trying to make the argument that someone within Duke arranged a special deal for Lance to purchase $100k worth of jewlery because he was that much of an impact player? Did that loan occur when he was a freshman? I think it was when he was a senior -- past the season.

Look I don't know why the kid made a boneheaded move, but I am pretty sure that he needed some Bactine when he left Coach K's office.

In case anyone wants to check what I am saying is correct here is his stats. He did better his junior year at 5.3 ppg. And you know, that just scream "Easy ticket to the NBA".

Well no, I don’t think I would have... but my family had to pay that tuition. Maybe if they didn’t I could/would have? That said sure, I think it is fishy. For me personally I do feel okay with it because A) it really wouldn’t have involved Duke in any meaningful way (like it didn’t win a game or land a recruit or involve anyone from Duke) and B) bc **** I would hate to lose a title over an ugly black Jesus necklace:). Far more importantly for this thread though, there are certainly no facts or proof or anything; there is literally just conjecture and assumption.

No, I think most people see it as an impermissible benefit from an outside source, not from Duke, which I think would still render him ineligible.

Btw, a number of Duke students COULD get that loan. I’d still bet on fishy over not, but I did want to point that out.

Going back to 07? Neat, I’ll do it for uk:

07- second round
08- first round
09- NIT
13- NIT
16- second round

Point being, uk and Duke are both elite programs and to try and cherry pick like this to try and paint a different picture is just silly and intellectually dishonest.

"Like Duke, Kentucky has built a cottage industry in “one-and-done” players. I asked Williamson why he ultimately picked Duke over Kentucky, and he went back to Krzyzewski.

“It was always more than basketball with Coach K,” Williamson said. “That basketball can stop bouncing for you at any time. If basketball was to end for me tomorrow, I would know I’m in good hands at Duke University.”

And later, Williamson noted a telling truism– college basketball is not fun and games. Coaches make millions. Players go where they believe they can maximize their exposure. Fans cheer for a player until he is badly injured or ineffective and then mostly forget him.

“In the end,” Williamson said, “this is a business. People don’t really care about your feelings. They can always go find somebody else.”

He has played 9 years in the NBA and while most of it is just a role player he has made enough to pay back $100K in jewelry. Don't even try to change the subject to say he wasn't a NBA prospect and act like he didn't get the loan because he was a Duke player and that don't even bring up the fact of where did he get the cash for the down payment? I would think a true Duke fan would know a former player has played in the NBA that long but then again maybe you do and are just trying to deflect. Either way working at a bank I can tell you that we would never loan an unemployed college student 100K on his own accord. Now with a wealthy co borrower backing him well that is a different story.

I think you guys are talking about two different things.

LT was saying that he didn't think that Duke had anything to do with the purchase because Lance wasn't a guy who was looking like some NBA player, so it wasn't likely the school tried to recruit him or whatever using some big payoff. I don't think he was making a comment about a loan vs future earnings... I think he was saying that it was unlikely that Duke itself was involved.

Obviously once LT got to the league, he could pay for it.

When you say a wealthy co-borrower, is that implying something about Duke (i.e. the basketball department or someone co-borrowed?) or is that a general statement? I had a number of friends at Duke who could have gotten that sort of loan because of who they were and who their family was.

I am implying a booster. We can both agree that most athletes do not have the financial background of a typical Duke student. Either way if he was given a loan that a typical student of his financial standing couldn't have gotten just because he was a Duke player and future NBA player then that is an illegal benefit and thus rendering him ineligible.

I think we can both agree that Coach K has had some guys get into trouble for shady stuff and let's face it if they were around a squeaky clean guy and learned from him they wouldn't be doing those things.

ok -- so who is the co-borrower? Someone at Duke? Seriously?! Would anyone -- I mean anyone on this board consider that Thomas was going to be in the NBA? If you look at the stats -- Lance is 6th on the team.

Do you think some agent would take this on? Or would it be some shifty pawnshop jewler who knows naive when he sees it. I don't think LT had a co-signor and Guido didn't care if LT was going into the NBA -- he knew that he could just make it known and the whole thing would get dealt with.

It's not bad company. Not sure what I would do with a sociology degree. And I know that I would not pay my kid's tuition for one.

Zion Williamson's parents moved from South Carolina to a $900,000 house in Durham they can not afford.

The FBI has proof Zion's stepdad asked a Kansas assistant for cash, a house, and a job.

Well, if they got the cash and the job they asked for could certainly afford it.

...implied illegal benefit. Illegal benefit would hinge on that Thomas got something that no regular Duke student could get, right? That isn't necessarily true... there are Duke students who could get that loan with that down payment. In fact, LT seems to say that it likely WASN'T that... no co-borrowers, and the jeweler didn't do it because he thought Lance was going to the NBA (although what would a jeweler know?)

And yeah, gotta restate that... NOBODY expected Lance Thomas to play in the NBA. Nobody.

I am not saying he is innocent, of course... it does look shady. But looking shady and BEING shady are two different things, and there isn't any proof or whatever the OP was looking for.

Not really. Who is the co-signer....if there is one.

If there is none the you are saying a jeweler loan an unemployed college student 100K on his own. Think about how stupid that sounds and you will see my point that he obtained a benefit that would not have been afforded to any other unemployed student.

Those blue tinted glasses have you blinded my friend. As I said earlier no bank would loan an unemployed college student without a job 100K. Trust me I know as I have been in the banking industry for close to 20 years. Banks have guidelines that have to be followed and one of them is proof of income to repay the debt. He had none unless he had a co borrower on the loan with him. So either he had a Duke booster help him or he was given a loan that nobody else would be able to get not even a student of a prominent family unless that family was a co borrower with them.

Is this where someone brings up "Strict Liability" the NCAA used in regards to UMASS? How would the Duke cases have gone if the NCAA used this standard for Lance Thomas and Corey Magette?

Those blue tinted glasses have you blinded my friend. As I said earlier no bank would loan an unemployed college student without a job 100K. Trust me I know as I have been in the banking industry for close to 20 years. Banks have guidelines that have to be followed and one of them is proof of income to repay the debt. He had none unless he had a co borrower on the loan with him. So either he had a Duke booster help him or he was given a loan that nobody else would be able to get not even a student of a prominent family unless that family was a co borrower with them.

If his family (who saved 120k+ with his scholarship and was well off) were the co borrower, would that be okay?

Got it -- So how good is the Duke Sociology program?

It's ranked #7 in the country.
Berkely
Harvard
UCLA
Princeton
UCSB
Univeristy of Chicago
Duke
UC Irvine
Cornell
Columbia

It's not bad company. Not sure what I would do with a sociology degree. And I know that I would not pay my kid's tuition for one.

I also seem to remember some Duke professor going off on Coach K and your shady 3-year Sociology program for athletes.
And UNC is ranked #2 in AFAM studies so I wouldn't put much value into these rankings.

That would depend on what you call well off. If they make a lot of money but owe a lot then no a bank still wouldn't consider an unsecured 100K loan. If they secured the loan with real estate and signed as a borrower with him then maybe but again it would depend on other factors. Banks have govt regulations to abide by and they have to lend according to those regs.

That's pretty cool that Duke players taking huge payouts from Nike are still eligible because Duke didn't pay them directly.

I wonder if the NCAA would agree that Big Coal could do the same for UK?

We'd be burned to rubble before the new moon.

Maybe Joe Craft just needs to start an AAU team.

Think about your own post. I’m just saying. It’s 2018. There are journalists that are independent and use YouTube as their platform. Do you honestly think that after the info that came about from the FBI probe about Zion’s folks asking for money that if there were a 900 K home the family was living in that there would be nothing more than a message board investigation? That’s not even realistically possible. Now granted, maybe Yahoo or someone is working up a story as we speak but I’m telling you right now, there’s no hiding that if it’s true. But it’s hard to be mad at folks for doubting something that’s not even heavily out there witb little to no results when you conduct a simple Google search

Man, you are naive. There’s zero ability to deny the Lance Thomas stuff. That’s a fact. What mental gymnastics do you perform to get around that gem?

Where did the senior get $30K in cash? And if it was on the up and up then why did he make the jeweler sign an agreement to not speak to the NCAA about $68k loan?

Duhon’s mom getting the booster job, her house paid for, and her son getting a brand new car is comical to me. K, like Wooden, is protected. It’s pathetic.

I never claimed Duke is clean. A kid from UK can get an envelope of cash from someone associated with the program this morning and that would equal UK dirty. It’s impossibke to stop but your references examples are a big difference from getting a million dollar house from Duke. There’s no hiding that.

I think someone should take a poll of the UK fanbase.

I think if you asked the poll on those above 55 and those below 55, you would find a large part of the anti-Duke feeling is found by those below 55. Have they gotten away somethings that others might not have gotten away with? Yes. It is aggravating that ESPN is particularly is a constant recruiting tool for Duke? Yes. But, just pure dislike for Duke, I think that is held by you young people.
