I have been having a serious case of the I Don't Wannas here lately. For those of you with kids you know what it is. You try to get the kid up from school and they reply, I don't wanna. Well here lately I don't wanna get up and go to work.

So I need to take a couple days and go somewhere else. But I can't figure out where I would want to go. The beaches are still way too high. The Smokies in the summer aren't that great. I want to go soon, so flying anywhere would be expensive. Atlanta I have been there and done that.

I don't care for country music. So is there anything in Nashville to do other than Opryland (too old and fat) and the Parthanon?

I am thinking Savannah would be unbearably hot right now.

Do y'all have any ideas?

Edit: I just looked at flights. In the time frame I can travel between now and when I do have a trip booked, flights anywhere are too stupid high right now. Cheapest round trip to Chicago is $516. I have crap i don't want to do this weekend, crap I don't want to do the last week of August so those weekends are out.

If you like a walkable downtown city Chicago is fantastic this time of year. Hotels and flights are cheap.

Driving distance from South Alabama in August without oppressive heat. Well, looks like you are going spelunking in East Tennessee. The Lost Sea was cool when I was 10.

Or get of your pocketbook and buy a ticket somewhere in the mountains.

I could book you a trip to the Rockies that would cost less than $1k for the 20th-23rd. Bham to ABQ flight, U-Haul pickup truck for a car rental, drive up to Taos, AirBNB a converted school bus, and go check out adventures with groups.

Highs in the low 80's with no humidity and lies in the 50's.

Nashville.

The Frist Art Museum is a cool place.

There are a couple exhibits going on that I’m interested in (Mackintosh and Glasgow Art as well as one by a Chicago based artist that piques my attention). Their Picasso and Western Art shows this spring were very cool.

Also check to see who’s performing. They don’t just play Country in Nashville. Or Western either for that matter. Phil Lesh and Friends played at the new Brooklyn Bowl there last week and Phish is playing at Ascend tonight and tomorrow night.

I like Charleston as a quick get away. Food is great, drinks are good, easy to walk around, beaches around the city, go out in the Harbor if you want, plenty of history, plenty of shopping.

I usually take a quick flight over from Nashville, but it’s certainly drivable.

Freaking covid kept me away from Charleston a year ago. I wanted to go a nephew’s graduation from The Citadel.

So eat and drink? I mean, it's just me. So nice restaurants make me feel weird going to. And there is only so much one man can eat. I would really like something more than just get drunk at a bar.

I went a few years ago. It was nice. Hordes and hordes of kids at the aquarium. I should have stayed at the Choo Choo. But instead I stayed at the Roxy. It was nice but small rooms and very hipster. The whole first floor is a bar. So it would be a really good wedding hotel or group meet up place.

Just make sure you have your Google maps or Waze app on when driving to Chattanooga. I took the scenic route going to the city because of an accident on the interstate.

Charleston flights are reasonable for when I can go. What is there to do there? I know nothing about the place. What is the best way to get around?

Well it is on the coast so most are restaurants you can go to in flip flops. If the bar scene is not your jam and you don’t like dirty ocean water then I may go somewhere else besides Ocean Springs. I have only been twice but went with friends and really enjoyed the food and nightlife though.

Go somewhere out west and learn to fly fish. Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah. Head west young man.

Chattanooga dude. Good food, good drink, cool bars, free outdoor concerts on Friday nights https://www.visitchattanooga.com/events/concerts-and-live-music/, raft/swim the Ocoee, Lookout Mnt https://www.nps.gov/chch/index.htm, drive up to Monteagle and walk around Sewanee (cool campus with gothic architecture). If you golf, Gil Hanse renovated the university course 8 yrs ago. It's matured now and is a fun little course. http://www.thecourseatsewanee.com/course/ (hole fly overs don't do it justice). Chattanooga is a great option for a 2-3 day get away. Pretty inexpensive and not too far of a drive.

North Georgia mountains might not be bad. You can do a little hiking on the southern part of the Appalachian trail, Helen GA is a recreation of an old Bavarian village, and the area around Dahonega is nice.

North Ga mountains - do cheap rafting with other groups. I also like the Florida freshwater springs swim holes.

As much of a hell hole Chicago is - the millennium mile and downtown museums are ok for solo. I solo travel a lot so like to join group tours. There’s some solo travel FB groups if interested

My son and I caught 37, 38, and 41 inch bull reds today in Biloxi, along with a Jack and several specks. It was a good day. Plenty of fishing to do if nothing else on the coast.

I don't have time to go that far west, nor will I ever go camping again. Too old for that.

But thank you for the suggestion.

Not sure how long you’ve felt this way, but you may benefit from bringing it up to your doctor. They can give you a prescription that can help a ton.

I did that, they gave me a pill that gave me permanent vision damage and required me to have eye surgery.

The city has quite a bit of culture and history. I consider it sisters with New Orleans. It doesn’t have the same french fingerprints, but you’ll notice parallels.

It has some very good food across all price points. For every Fig and Husk, there’s a BBQ or burger shop with great food. Rodney Scott has roots around town.

From a historical perspective, it’s very old (at least by American standards). There are carriage tours, ghost tours, Fort Sumter is there as well. It’s right on the water. So, you can rent a boat for the day and go out in the Harbor. There are beaches right outside of town for an easy day trip. Don’t expect the Florida Gulf Coast, but it’ll be fine for a day.

It’s very accessible. I usually grab a VRBO off King Street. The whole city is walkable, but Uber makes it even easier.

Love Chattanooga. I think the future is really bright for midsized cities around the South. Chattanooga, Fayetteville, Lexington, Huntsville, etc.

So find a rental in the old town, uber from the airport to there, hoof it the weekend, and uber back to the airport?

Drive 6 hours, pay airport parking, to fly. By all means let me spend half my vacation driving to and from the airport.
