Branson really isn’t a bad option. The Table Rock lake is beautiful. They have several great golf courses. The Branson Landing on the river is really cool with a lot of shops and restaurants. Silver Dollar City if you’re that old and wanna catch some shows or if you’re still into riding rides they have plenty to chose from. They have a cool cave tour at silver dollar city. Tons of museums and shows in town there as well. It’s nothing special but it’s affordable, the mountains and views are really nice and it seems to check most of your boxes of things you’re interested in and it’s not terribly far.

Kansas City is one of my favorite weekend getaway spots to go to with my wife. Tons to do there as well.

If you wanna be away from people there are some great cabins and fishing guides that are affordable on the white river in north Arkansas. You’ll catch tons of trout and walleye

Yep. King Street is generally the hot spot. I usually stay a few blocks north of College of Charleston. Anything south of there will be a great trip.

I’m not sure where you’re flying out of, but there’s a new airline called ‘Breeze’ which flies direct into CHS.

I am in Montgomery, Al.

Flights are good. American flies from here to CLT with a puddle jumper and from there with a puddle jumper. Looking at it Patriots Point is more my thing. That is also where the Ft. Sumpter ferry is. Wondering if it is better to fly and uber or drive and have my truck there. Regardless you hit a HR with this suggestion.

What about a MS River cruise? I'm guessing they make stops at all the big cities along the way like Memphis and St Louis so you'd get to enjoy the best of several cities while getting the peace of sailing down the river.

Fly to Belize City, catch an Air Tropic flight to San Pedro Town, rent a golf cart go north over the bridge to the "Truck Stop", order a Pain Killer (a rum and pineapple drink) and forget about your problems.

Flights from MEM to DEN can usually be had super cheap if you're just doing a three- or four-day trip and don't have to check luggage.

Southwest and Frontier both fly between those two and you can probably get round trip for under $300. I know the bargain airlines nickel and dime you, but if you can make it work for you it's a cheap way to get to the Mountain West.

In the Southeast, Chattanooga is hard to beat for a quick getaway. I like Asheville, NC a lot also. Great food, beer and independent bookstore town.

If you've never been to the WWII museum in New Orleans, it's well worth a trip there.

If you're in Mobile, take a cruise out of Mobile. I think they have 3 or 5 day cruises from there.

I shouldn't have said that. Sorry for being a jerk

Awe, man. The previous reply was much more entertaining.

As to your OP, we had a recent thread about the Highlands/Cashiers area and I'm headed back in a week. It's great this time of year when it's hot as hell in the Deep South. Granted, I have a free place to stay when I'm there. So, I have no info on the price range of accommodations.

It really sounds like you need a hobby more than a vacation. If there is not something you're particularly into and you don't like going places to eat and drink, then it's hard to find things to do.

Being in Montgomery, not sure what there is to do there other than golf. I assume hunting and freshwater fishing is also good. Wouldn't be the easiest hobby for you because it would involve a lot of driving, but scuba diving is fun and always gives you trips to do. Plus I think people sometimes dive the lakes in alabama that used to be quarries. Lots of places organize dive vacations to that will provide a group activity.
Seems like hiking isn't generally that great in the south because of the heat/humidity and generally not super interesting terrain, but that's always an option, although if you don't like camping I'm guessing hiking might not be your thing either.

But regardless, based on your responses to all the suggestions, I wouldn't be looking for a vacation trip as much as I would be trying to figure out something I might like to try that I might keep doing in the future.

I do a bit of solo travel.

Most is within the US and I usually combine visiting family and live music.

Many of the facebook groups mentioned by AO are good.

Rick Steves has some great tips about traveling in Europe.

Ireland and Spain were easy trips for me.

If you've not traveled to another country alone in several years, you may want to check with a travel agent or consultant.

If you are worried about the heat, don't come to St. Augustine. It is hot as balls here from 6am until about 2 or 3 pm when the thunderstorms roll in. I'm not sure who is not hot during July or August. Maybe Alaska?

I have been having a serious case of the I Don't Wannas here lately. For those of you with kids you know what it is. You try to get the kid up from school and they reply, I don't wanna. Well here lately I don't wanna get up and go to work.

So I need to take a couple days and go somewhere else. But I can't figure out where I would want to go. The beaches are still way too high. The Smokies in the summer aren't that great. I want to go soon, so flying anywhere would be expensive. Atlanta I have been there and done that.

I don't care for country music. So is there anything in Nashville to do other than Opryland (too old and fat) and the Parthanon?

I am thinking Savannah would be unbearably hot right now.

Do y'all have any ideas?

Edit: I just looked at flights. In the time frame I can travel between now and when I do have a trip booked, flights anywhere are too stupid high right now. Cheapest round trip to Chicago is $516. I have crap i don't want to do this weekend, crap I don't want to do the last week of August so those weekends are out.

Just got back from Savannah a couple of weeks ago. It was hot, but it wasn't unbearable. A lot of the parks are very shaded. Forsyth Park was actually pretty cool with all the hanging moss and the fountain, made it feel 15-20 degrees cooler than it actually was.

There is a lot of walking though, so after the 3rd day of 15k+ steps, my knees were ready for a break.

Glad you mentioned that. I took scuba diving lessons and got certified in my youth after college and before I got married. Did my checkout dive out from Pensacola. Also did another dive trip to Morrison Springs in Florida, but never pursued it past that. Now that I am retired and single, I am thinking about getting my certification again and doing some nice dive trips.

sorry, "Mobile Bay" had me thinking you were close to NOLA.

Drive 6 hours, pay airport parking, to fly. By all means let me spend half my vacation driving to and from the airport.

I'd go to Chattanooga or North GA and do some fishing.

I never did it, but sportzfan recommended a scuba trip to the Virgin Islands with easydiversmemphis.com. Stay aboard a boat and dive off of it. Lots of options out there and almost certainly a dive club in any small sized city or if you are near water that does similar type trips. Hope I get back into it when I'm not busy. Right now, it's pretty much just the occasional side trip on a vacation every few years.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check into it. I've always wanted to dive in a place like that.

Another, easier, cheaper trip that I have wanted to do is the flower gardens out of Freeport texas (https://flowergarden.noaa.gov/visiting/wwis.html). Only reason I haven't done that is that I want to do it after I've had a recent reef dive. I go so long between dives that I always just do a shallow water reef or wreck dive. I don't want to jump right into a 60ft+ dive unless I have a shallow water dive first just to refresh on everything.

Chattanooga dude. Good food, good drink, cool bars, free outdoor concerts on Friday nights https://www.visitchattanooga.com/events/concerts-and-live-music/, raft/swim the Ocoee, Lookout Mnt https://www.nps.gov/chch/index.htm, drive up to Monteagle and walk around Sewanee (cool campus with gothic architecture). If you golf, Gil Hanse renovated the university course 8 yrs ago. It's matured now and is a fun little course. http://www.thecourseatsewanee.com/course/ (hole fly overs don't do it justice). Chattanooga is a great option for a 2-3 day get away. Pretty inexpensive and not too far of a drive.

ETA: Sorry, didn't see Cotton's post.

There's also a course about 30 miles south of Chattanooga called Canyon Ridge. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but it was open to the public at the time. Don't know about now. It's the most scenic course I've ever played.
