Dems are missing a golden opportunity to to swap the wall/fence/barrier/whatever for protection for the DACA kids (that they claim they want) and help out the asylum seekers at the border. Do the Dems hate Trump so much that they're willing to squander this change? Sadly I think they do .

He's giving them every chance. He said he's going to do it regardless. Might as well get something out of it.

Not on the table. It's $5.7 bn for the wall in exchange with nothing. The Dems and moderte Rs agreed to more wall money last year in exchange for DACA, but the WH and House Rs blew it up. What's the incentive to negotiate with such a flip flopper (Trump)?

Plus moderate Rs are going to side with the Dems shortly.

But here's the thing -the Dem's position at the table is much different now than it was a year ago. Dems now control one half of one third of the gov't and they (if they were smart) would demand something in exchange for the wall. Also tend to believe Trump was willing to strike some sort of a bargain yesterday, but walked away when Nancy said no. BTW, i bet when Nancy was younger she had a nice rack

None of that has to do with shutting the government down. Just yesterday, Senate Rs tried to get Trump to support last year's deal and he refused. I don't see the incentive for dems. Trump is unreliable. They should open up the government and debate immigration reform.

Edit to add - PS: This whole shutting the government down needs to be eliminated. It's garbage. Both sides use it, both are to blame....but let's just eliminate that procedure.

Trump was willing to open up the gov't, then he asked Nancy if she would (after the gov't reopened) consider the wall, and she said no. At that point, everything ended, the talks shutdown, and the Dems will walk away with nothing.

That's not the way I read the meeting yesterday. Had he said will you negotiate immigration in 30 days....the answer would have been yes (or Dems would lose most o their public support, imo). All he did yesterday was ask for his money 30 days later. Didn't offer anything up.

Dems are just playing the game like Trump is but I think it's advantage Dems right now.

That's when things became heated. Pelosi and Trump argued how there are women with electrical tape on their bodies smuggling drugs across the border, coming across where there is no barrier and not at the ports of entry.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer jumped in to stress the importance of opening up the government and then negotiating on border security funding form there. Trump then asked Democrats if he opened up the parts of the government that are shut down, if Pelosi would be willing to build a barrier. She declined. He left.

After Trump left the room, Pelosi and Schumer got up to leave. Vice President Mike Pence then asked for a counter offer from Democrats — asking what are they willing to work on because then the White House would have a better idea to move forward. They didn't offer one, something that has frustrated White House officials since they first privately offered less than $5.6 billion the day after the government first shut down.

Trump wanted to open the gov't as long as the wall was part of the discussions, Nancy said no, and that was the end of it

I had a different read on it. Regardless, he's not accomplishing anything by shutting down the government. House dems will need him for something in these next 2 years. DACA, other immigration policies, infrastructure, liberal ****. That's the time to negotiate with them. It's called leverage. I would have thought a master deal maker would know this.

No disrespect intended for Pence by this, but he's negotiated for concessions on this before, and Trump said those concessions were things he wouldn't sign.

What I don't get is Pence and McCarthey actually came out of that meeting to the cameras and an attempt to show Trump was willing to negotiate, he brought candy. Really? Does Trump think the WH and negotiating with the Dem leaders of Congress is like a Girl Scout meeting discussing where they are going to Summer Camp? Does any whacko actually watch that he brought candy and think Pelosi is going to hand him 6 billion dollars with no distinction of where the wall is going to be built? Damn, you people are nuts supporting Trump's position.

I am trying to figure out how someone could find a way to twist him bringing candy to the meeting as a negative.

It's like a car salesman offering you a cup of coffee. How much ground do you give up in negotiations for that cup o' joe?

last week Pence said they'd come down to 2.5 billion, hours later Trump said he wouldn't budge from 5 billion. so, why waste time on Pence

You give up nothing but you appreciate that they are professional enough to offer it. Again, finding fault in that is like trying to prove to everyone you just hate the guy.

It would. And thankfully the adult Repubs will start opening up the government soon. Then Trump and his cuck followers can blame da RINOs!!!!!
And as i said in another thread, how do you get something past the extremists in both parties. Any deal is going to require moderate Dems to come to the table as well.

And the Dems won't come up from $1.00 - soooooooooo yeah
They are saying that this should be a separate negotiation, just like the GOP said when the Dems held things up for DACA. So the Dems are saying that we should open the government, then negotiate a deal on the border.

No no no.....explain it all,....and in great detail.

So, The Republican controlled Senate approved a CR to keep the government open and before it got to The House of Representatives Laura Ingram tore Donnie a new one and he closed the government thinking Nancy Pelosi would give him what he wanted. oh yeah i forgot, Donnie went on tv and said he owned the shut down and not blame the dems. got it?

Okay great, but it's going to require the Dems to give a little about the wall and so far...they're not interested in doing that. So how do you negotiate when you already know that the answer is no?

I could be wrong, but I don't think Bru was painting it as a negative, only that it wasn't proof that Trump was super serious about cutting a deal.

Except your timeline is way off. There was a chance to keep the gov't open, but Chuckie said no.

He spent more time talking about the candy and girl scouts than he did about anything else. Exactly how does bringing candy or coffee or donuts to a meeting suggest you are not serious? I see this happen every day.

To open up the government? I don’t think there will be an issue at all. For immigration reform, it will take moderates from both sides.

I will laugh uncontrollably if Trumpers try and negotiate and Gang of 8 type immigration deal.

That is exactly what took place in Lindsay Graham's office yesterday and is being discussed by Rep Tom Cole and Sen Blount this morning.

I mean I hope it passes, but man am I gonna laugh. Little Marco!!
I know. But I'm sure many on here don't remember what you are referencing with your "Little Marco" comment.

I've been saying for weeks with some numbnuts constantly twisting words (what else is new?) that I favor Congress working on comprehensive immigration package. But it will get nowhere. Trump isn't interested in solving problems. He is interesting in creating chaos and having someone and something to ***** about as he is already in re-election mode. Without complaining, he is nothing. And he doesn't give a rat's *** about what is best for the country; just what is best for his ego.
