Why don't we ask the question? Why didn't he compete at all, in anything last year? Why haven't we seen him in Folk? He took a RS and didn't see any foam in public.
Good questions. The kidney issues supposedly came when he tried to cut to 57.

In a recent interview, Ono said himself he doesn't know why he never wrestled folkstyle. He could have at least wrestled unattached in some opens.

5 for 5 will help Ono with the grind aspect. He won't have to wrestle a full season of weight cuts. They can send out the backup as much as they want against lesser competitions so he's fresher at the end.
Oh yes, if he stays five years he will get better and better. He will adapt. If he embraces the style then I will absolutely change my tune. But I think it's going to take a while. And will he want to, given he is so unbelievable at freestyle? Globally freestyle is king.

He needs mat time in Folk.

EXACTLY! Why didn't he wrestle in any open competitions just to get a taste of the style and competition. There is a very obvious reason for this...

He was cutting to 57 for a tournament in Japan and got a kidney infection I believe it was. He was gonna hit a few small opens in Jan and Feb before the infection. The plan was always for him to wrestle in Japan some 1st semester and hit a few opens the 2nd. He couldn't do 5 dates because he's not considered a true freshman.According to Blaze and Pierce no one can ride him in the room 🤷
This was recorded the week between Big 10s and NCAAs

I will come back and eat crow if he can't be ridden and turned by the elite guys. And the scoring is so different. We all saw the crazy points Jax gave up this summer in freestyle that aren't points in folkstyle.

I could see him having a strategy of takedown and immediate cut and doing that a bunch of times. Someone else mentioned it earlier that at 3 to 1 that can get out of hand pretty fast. And he could also choose neutral every time. He will be good. I'm just not worried about him at 133 or 141 with who we have. :)

Any of you folkstyle chest-pounders ever heard of Yojiro Uetake?

Lightweight freestyle guy, probably never did much in folk. Not sure.
Nobody has heard of this nobody. Give us someone who actually did something.

all jokes aside you can’t compare then to now, kids become specialist so early now in sports they have decades of experience in a style and they are only 8 years old … I know mathemagic …
