How would you fix College Hoops?

It’s obvious that interest in the sport has significantly dwindled in the last decade, especially the last 5-6 years.

What would you do to fix it? Some obvious ones for me are:

-Two and Done
-More big time Home and Home series (Duke vs UK)d still
-Start the season in January to avoid College football/NFL season.

What say you?
No charging call. If defender makes contact with or fouls driver to basket, it will always be against the defender. You should not be allowed to play defense at the last possible second by cutting in front of a player driving to the basket. This does not eliminate the concept of "help-side" defense; however, the same is true for them as well...if the shift over to pick up a driver and make contact on the shot or drive, it's a foul on the defense. There are way too many missed calls that result in charging calls against the offensive player who has beaten already one man put cannot beat two or three, or who makes contact with a defender who is still sliding laterally and still gets called for the charging foul. Refs cannot get this thing correct--it happens too fast and the semi-circle arc has done little to correct questionable or wrong calls.

Go to NBA Timing Format. Four quarters 12 minutes each. More kids get a chance to play. Better bang for your entertainment buck. More Rupp Arena ice cream sales. Football games do not last too long for me; basketball games are too short...two hours and you're out the door. They are over too fast.

Add a sixth foul before fouling out.

Basketball season begins 1 December.

How would enforce the 2 and done ? If a kid decides to leave after 1 year there is no way to stop him and the nba would take him after 1 year .
exactly, it's dependent upon the NBA
They and AAU have screwed college ball, neither one gives a damn

But, if the NBA rule was immediately after graduation (completion) from HS a player must either declare for professional or wait for 2 years removed from graduation (completion) of HS
Somehow, fix AAU ball (I have no clue, how) except getting rid of the sponsorship or at least diminishing it. Something like, any player on an AAU team that receives over x amount is declared as not eligible for NCAA. of course, that would really screw things up for two or three years...
but, then maybe the college game would be better

Better refs (hold accountable)
Make flopping a bench technical on the head coach... and actually call it.

"College baseball" doesn't have anything figured out. How do you propose getting the NBA to adopt the MLB draft rule?
Okay, let me clarify, College Baseball along with MLB have it figured out. As for the NBA, surely they are intelligent enough to see that the college baseball recruitment and draft eligibility works for all. In my opinion, I don't see a negative to that formula.

If they agreed with you, they'd have already done it. They disagree with you. Neither the NBA nor the NBPA care one iota about the NCAA and their decision making has nothing to do with what's good for college basketball. They do not believe that making people go to college for 3 years in any circumstance has any benefit for them.

Illegal defense rules, specifically defensive 3 seconds, no off ball double teams, no charges by secondary defenders in the paint or otherwise expand the arc

Increase paint size to pro/international measurements

Eliminate perimeter ball fakes as automatic travel violations. Players have to actually shuffle their feet in order for a violation to occur.

Eliminate the one and one, and award a double bonus on the 8th team foul.

Make almost everything review-able for P5 games, have a 3rd party reviewing plays for refs similar to the NBA's Secaucus set up.

Eliminate all preseason practice restrictions.
All great ideas especially widening the lane and no sagging off your man.

I am onboard with much of what you suggest. But, the charge call cannot be eliminated completely. A defensive player has a right to his space. Whether he is in the lane or trapping out near mid-court. If he is established, he owns that space. Offensive player can't just bowl him over.

Agree completely with the 4 quarters format. Long overdue. Men's college bball is the only version that doesn't play the game this way. 12 minute quarters is fine too. No 18 year old kid is going to get tired.

6th foul is fine too as long as refs don't see it as a opportunity to call MORE fouls.

I still like college basketball with Thanksgiving Turkey so, lets say 2nd weekend of Nov. is Opening Day.

I would also add, make refs employees of either the conferences or NCAA. Hold them accountable by offering bonuses for evenly and fairly called games. Penalize them if they screw up too often.

Bring back the jump ball on tie-ups. Hate to agree with Dookie Vitale here but, alternating possessions is a terrible idea.

Any coach that leaves a program on probation gets a automatic 5 year ban from college basketball. No if's, and's or but's. It's disgraceful that coaches can get caught cheating, resign and be back on the sidelines within a year or two.

For UK:

Bring back holiday tournament play. Too bad if Calipari doesn't like it. Or, as a compromise play in a holiday tournament every other year and bring back the UKIT or better yet, Big Four Classic in the off years.

No mens/womens doubleheaders. This ain't high school. Besides, the women would never get to play on TV like this. No network is going to devote 4 hours + to two schools.

1. Refs can be questioned by coaches and the media. They are not Faberge eggs.
2. Simplify the block/charge call.
3. NCAAT reduced to 32 teams.
4. Get rid of the alt possession on held ball. Jump it up.
5. Move 3pt line to NBA distance.
6. Four 10 minute quarters.

The college baseball rule does not make any player go to college. The NBA is forcing them to enroll at a college for one year, which in my opinion is completely ridiculous for the player. If he is good enough to pursue a professional career, what is the real difference to the NBA if he attends college for a single season?

The player that is good enough to be drafted basically has to enroll in a college, attend classes for about two months, achieve a passing grade, then skip classes the last semester because grades don't get posted until the season is over. Leave it up to the player and his family to make what they feel is in their best interest.

This won’t be received well but here goes.

1. Stop trying to emulate NBA. It is a different game with a different fan base. Enforce rules to stop things like Euro-walk (or is it “step”), palming, etc.
2. Increase shot clock to 40 seconds except for final 5 minutes of game. Players get frantic fast at college level and force things. It actually hurts offense.
3. Move back 3 point line further. Teams rely on it too much and it hurts offense. Now the only good shots are threes and dunks. Need to have more room and reason for mid range game.
4. Give every school 16 scholarship slots. But all slots are locked for four years. If a kid leaves you cannot award his scholarship until his four years are up. Doesn’t matter the reason: transfer, pro, quit, die. Doesn’t matter. Will force coaches to recruit carefully. Set minimum at 8 if a mutiny occurs and bunches leave. With new rules for using likeness to earn money make it so players who register to earn money use up one of the slots to keep blue bloods from filling roster with walk ons who will leave after one year with cash. Fifth year players (red shirts, transfer, etc) do not count toward 16 limit.
5. The sport was more popular when regional. Perhaps players who graduate HS within state of a school do not count against scholarship limit.
6. No reclassification for players. It is bad enough that frosh play but letting high school kids play is bad idea.
7. Change nothing in tournament. It is what people watch now. Best of three ideas are for the NBA. See #1 above.
8.Limit replay to 30 second review. If not obvious on 30 seconds then leave as called. Also do not look so closely to see whose finger touched the ball last. See who primarily knocked it OOB.

The NBA doesn't force a single person to enroll in college for any amount of time. You could always just elect not to play in college and work out for the draft, to play overseas, and now to play in the G league. I believe the NBPA prefers being able to go straight to the NBA from high school, but no one in the NBA or the NBPA entertains anything like the MLB system. We're simply never going to have a system where people who go to college are locked into staying there. We can dream about it, wish about it, talk about how much better it would be for the college game, but there is not even the most remote possibility of it actually happening.

Fair enough, and you are probably right, good discussion, I just see it differently. They used to be eligible for the draft directly from High School, and it seemed to work out just fine for all of the parties involved.

Rule changes: No more charge/block call. No more possession nonsense. Tie ups become jump balls. Move shot clock back to 35 secs.

I would like to see the NCAA disbanded and let colleges form their own Org. NCAA dictates too much and is too uneven in their enforcement.

The NCAA could drop the amateur nonsense, and go to a minor league pro model. All college players would sign a 3 year contract for $50,000 a year, free room and board, and would be permitted to attend class if they chose (but not required). High school players not wishing to go to college could go to the G League or play overseas. Little League baseball and football teams are sponsored Coca-Cola, Lowes, etc., or local businesses without the parents being employed by the companies in most cases. Why couldn't colleges just sponsor the so called college teams? It would end so much of the phony pretense. What percentage of big time college football and basketball players do you think have as much as 6th grade academic skills? It was maybe 20 years ago or so, that some former college athlete sued his former college (ACC schooI, I think it was), because after four years of college, he still couldn't read and write. Just how someone who can't read and write gets admitted to college much less stays eligible for four years is beyond me.

The thread is about how to improve college basketball. We understand why the system is what it is. That isn't relevant. His suggestion is completely spot on. It WOULD improve college basketball, which is what the thread is about. Whether the NBA would go along with it isn't relevant, every last person here is well aware that they haven't and wont.won't. Sorry you misunderstood the thread title I guess?

You can’t get rid of 1 and done unless you control the NBA. You CAN make it lucrative for star players to stay be allowing them to be paid for endorsements.
There are ways to keep it from becoming a bidding war for recruits. Freshmen are not eligible for endorsements. Everything has to be disclosed and based on market value.
Zero tolerance for undisclosed payments/promise of specific future deals.

Get college basketball out of the ncaa at least the top 32 or so teams. Reconfigure those teams into a league that’s isn’t governed by the ncaa amateur rules. Make it a playoff format and maybe have an ABC type of division so you get 96 schools involved maybe even a D division. Everything else can stay governed by the ncaa like a club team

Seems covid killed college ball for a few seasons and maybe it bounces back or maybe it's gonna be like watching high school ball for a few years. I been a fan of the good and bad years so its not our fault the product turned to ****. I wanna know how two years without March Madness fells like so I'll find myself less depressed when we lose big games. Hell it already don't matter much I just smh and say a few bad words.

alot of the fix really is up to the NBA when it comes to how the NCAA is run. with that said I think ways to not be beholden to the NBA is:
1) let kids go completely through the draft and if they don't like where they were drafted or don't get drafted the NCAA should not rule them ineligible. they just have to get rid of any agents before returning to school. (this is the only way to get some of these guys heads right as far of where they actual are and what they actually need)

2)let the kids make money on their likeness during the off season if they can, there won't be that many that can do this and this is like telling a college kid they cant have a job during the summer because they are on academic scholarship

with one and dones ive always felt that kids and the people around them have always overvalued their worth in the NBA and they dont get that hard lesson until it is to late.

I'd make scholarships 3 years and the 4th year is optional (school or player can decline). Although I'm not exactly sure how this would work with transferring.

Players that want out of the scholarship after 1 or 2 years have to pay a hefty buy out back to the school. $1M? $2M? So if you want to enter the draft after 1 year of college, you better be damn sure you're getting drafted.

I'd let players enter the NBA draft out of high school - or develop the G-League to where those players can go there and get paid.

I'm tired of these players coming to college with both feet already out the door before they ever step foot on the college campus. If you're not willing to make a 3 year commitment to college, then sign on to a G-League team, or Europe, or some other professional avenue. Can't get a G-League or professional team to sign you? ... Maybe you're not as good as you think you are.

I'd rather watch college basketball where players develop and grow as a team than to constantly watch these players showboat thinking their too good for the college game and just biding their time for the NBA draft. I'll take a player that can consistently hit layups over an "I'm too good for college" player trying to windmill a dunk from the 3 point line and have it clang off the back of the rim.

Shorten shot clock to 25 seconds

Add 6th foul

Eliminate secondary defender charge calls. If you beat your man you shouldn't be penalized for a guy standing by the basket who left his own man. What effing sense does that make.

4-10 minute quarters

Emphasis on players flopping. No warning. Auto free throw and ball under the basket.

Jump ball instead of alternate possession
