What was his major issue with UK? He happened just slightly ahead of my following. I remember his quote "If two people fell in a hole, one would be a UK fan".

Joe B. wouldn't hire him as an assistant as part of the Minniefield deal
This ... and he took it upon himself to destroy Joe B. So he started following Otis and bad mouthing UK program by saying DM had gone to the wrong school because of it and of course Otis lapped him up and gave him a forum to do his thing...one of the reasons I started hating Otis and had no use for him selling himself out like that...think he since has apologized to Joe and mended some fences, but Otis used him up and casted him aside after a while...good riddance.

IIRC, he was somewhat critical of UK (and Joe B) regarding the so called flex offense that was popular at the time. Joe and UK took it a little personally and that started the falling out.

DOn't know what his issue was. But what the hell does that quote mean?

Great question. I know there is a bible verse about he who digs a pit will fall in and if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on him. Maybe Sutherlund was trying to be funny and got mixed up.

Dirk could have been a great nba player, but had far too many issues off the court that held him back...was sad. Don't know what he is up to today.

....maybe the original loserville douchebag behind a mic. Loved to take shots at Rupp's record because of UK being in the SEC. Sound like he was maybe Zipp's Grandpa.

Hearing him call games was about as classless ear piercing thing ever. Bob (pitinosuckass) Valvano is heading in the same direction..The more ghetto the announcer the better the tard fit...

Sutherland laid that blame on Joe B as well..He thought Dirk was an early version of Jordan..Still remember him getting a lay up blocked when he should have dunked the ball for the win versus Tard U in 83..Fans blamed Dirk for that hence even riled Jock more..a dunk would have gotten a plus one..still hurts to watch. The cats lost in OT

I remember back in the early to mid 90's, Van Vance would have him on his SportsTalk show on 84 WHAS every now and then. He would always get his little digs in at UK. Pitino was owning Denny and UL at that time, so I think he was a little butthurt about that. I can remember soon after UK got beat in the tourney in 94 or 95, he was on there, and said Pitino would never win a title with his pressing style of play. [laughing]

I used to enjoy following U of L and the Cats...I was a big Denny Crum fan and would cheer for Cards until Jock started working for U of L and trashing Joe B and the Cats....he is really the main reason for the hatred today....

Jock got mixed up, a lot. That is why Joe B. wouldn't hire him.

Bits and pieces. Jock loved UK and scouted for Coach Rupp. Joe took over and his style of play was methodical and he became so so conservative. Developed a quick hook on mistakes. Frustrating to watch. UL was uptempo and the contrast was apparent. Jock was critical of Joe holding the team back and voiced it. UL seized the moment and hired him to broadcast their games and WHAS used him for talk radio ratings. I guess he was the original local controversial sport talk show character. Rough on Joe. Loved Rupp. Is he still alive?

Jock used to often say on the radio that he never had a UK fan challenge him on any of the negative things he said about UK. I was at the Derby Festival in Louisville to see some UK recruits with my dad, uncle and nephews. This was in the 80s. Jock walked past our seats and my uncle (about the same age as Jock) stood up and gave Jock a piece of his mind. Told him he'd kick his *** right there if he didn't keep walking. Jock was completely humiliated and turned and walked away. I never again heard Jock say a UK fan had never stood up to him.

Pretty much the bottom line,it is kinda funny to think that UL is still in the same boat now as they were then. They are playing a poor second fiddle to UK in basketball(in spite of Pitino's best efforts to make it otherwise)

As someone said in this thread if DM dunks the ball then 83' doesn't happen,it seems so long ago but the memory is still as vivid as ever.

Weirdly UK seems to have several guys that were once UK guys who went over to the dark side. Sutherland, Reed, Terry Meiner (UK grad), and Paul Rogers (worked for Cawood and I think he went to UK too).

I followed them a bit since I used to work for UL in the Crum hey day. I remember when Peck Hickman was the color guy on tv...LOL. He was terrible. Never was a fan of UL anything more than casually since I was a Wildcat since conception. Didn't have to hate them because they really were not relevant until 80. When Sutherland got in board, he got a lot of UK fans blood boiling. The fever has risen ever since.

To his credit, Jock did make amends with UK fans/Joe B. later on in the years following. He was on a radio show a couple years ago (with Dick Gabriel?) and really cleared up the reasons for his disdain toward UK and seemed to have buried the hatchet, moving on with life. He acted like all that was in the past and that he was on good terms with coach Joe B. and UK fans in general now.

Some very good answers in this post,a lot of people knew Jock.He did hate on Hall for ruining Dirk (his Opinion),but he was a heck of a good high school coach, kind of a legend in Kentucky High school.I believe he coached early on at Gallatin County when he went out on the floor to question a Ref's call and the ref told him for every step back to the bench he was going to call a technical.Jock supposedly ask the ref (each step back) and the ref said yes.Jock motioned for two players on the bench to come on the floor and they carried him back to the bench. No technicals we're called.I heard this years ago, myth or legend I don't know.

Jerk Southerland is a man who should be pitied. It was amazing to watch him go from a man with little ability on the sidelines to a man of no ability behind the microphone. His hatred for Coach Hall led him down a path of jealousy that was truly sad to watch. He was such a discredit to the UL program one has to think that even the ul fans were ashamed of him.

I just remember him as the coach at Lafayette in the 70s when they got their asses kicked regularly by the other 3 high schools in Lex. He was an a-hole then too, before Dirk came along.

Terry Meiners only went to UK for one year I think and was a fan while his brother played FB there...he was one of the original Benedict jock stiffers and became an Otis fan when Benedict took that job...As for Rogers it is his lively hood and he has been their broadcast guy for I guess 30 yrs so I can live with that..
