I remember him when he coached Lafayette. He brought his high school team to play Ashland in the AIT tourney. He was up on the Tomcats late in the 4th Qtr....game was in hand and he had someone get him a hotdog from concessions and finished the game while eating that hotdog. Needless to say the post game handshake was a challenge.

Joe B. wouldn't hire him as an assistant as part of the Minniefield deal
And after that he never missed a chance to talk bad about Coach Hall. I remember that he was on a call-in show in the early '80's and was constantly degrading UK and Hall.

I remember that show very well. I was still living in Lexington at the time and he never missed a chance to diss Joe B.

Pretty crazy I found this- was googling my Dad, Kurt Rose/Lafayette and found this forum.
My dad has nothing but good things to say about Jock, I’ve met him myself a few times and was a really nice man. My dad says Dirk Minniefield was the best athlete he’s ever seen and based on the dunk he had in ‘83 he’s not wrong!

Couldn’t stand to listen to that mush mouth hack. Van Vance I liked cause of his day’s doing the Kentucky Colonel’s games. Him and Van had a regular caller on Vans’ weeknight show name of Minnie, Indiana Minnie. She was a IU fan and called in to bad mouth Kentucky so her and Jock got along great. She was a big time Bobby Knight defender and she hated Kentucky. I remember I called in a few times just to give IU hell and tried to guess how quick she would call in. I’d sit back and laugh cause I used to get her so mad.

I remember reading an article or hearing an interview with Jock, maybe on WLAP, where Jock said that he was sorry for all the negativity toward UK and Joe Hall. He indicated that he wanted to be on good terms with everyone.

I enjoyed Minnie. VV and I are good friends I remember that Jock had a radio call in show on WVLK and he bad mouthing UK and Joe B Ralph Hacker who owned the station called him in and told him UK was the Big Dog
Jock persisted and Hacker fired him Ralph made sure Jock could not get hired anywhere on Central KY
So Jock hooked up with WHAS

I remember when Jock apologized to Joe B. After that Jock became a pretty big man in my eyes..... There was another member of the media back in the 80's that treated Coach Hall like crap. And to this day has never apologized. I'm talking about one of the biggest P.O.S. that ever put pen to paper Billy Reed. That maggot Reed actually criticized Joe B because Hall would send his players to a class that would help them do interviews with the media. Reed said that Hall wasn't letting his players be themselves.

My favorite Sutherland‘s story:
Louisville was beating Auburn by 20 at the haft at a tournament in Puerto Rico. Sutherland said no wonder Kentucky dominates the SEC with teams like Auburn in it. In the 2nd haft Auburn opens a can of whoop *** and beat the Cards by 10 points. 😂

This ... and he took it upon himself to destroy Joe B. So he started following Otis and bad mouthing UK program by saying DM had gone to the wrong school because of it and of course Otis lapped him up and gave him a forum to do his thing...one of the reasons I started hating Otis and had no use for him selling himself out like that...think he since has apologized to Joe and mended some fences, but Otis used him up and casted him aside after a while...good riddance.
I never understood a single word he said. I think Coach Ogeron could translate.

....I'm glad he didn't.... can't stand that guy's voice.
He isn't as emotional as Tom Leach but, Rogers seems to be very professional when calling a game. He rarely offers a personal opinion during the game. Seems like a decent guy. Hate that he is stuck with Valvano. They don't seem to mesh very well either.

You nailed it. Jock Sutherland was the most spiteful and vengeful call in show host in the history of Kentucky radio. He despised the ground Joe B walked on. He berated Joe B with every opportunity and when the radio station finally booted him, Jock high tailed it to Louisville where he continued his bad mouthing of Joe B and UK. He eventually sucked up to UL enough to become a color commentator on the UL radio broadcast.

Dirk could have been a great nba player, but had far too many issues off the court that held him back...was sad. Don't know what he is up to today.
About 10 kids and living in Lexington. Hell he had 3 in high school.

My dad used to listen to Jock’s radio show on WHAS and my dad would get really mad at his comments. One time before the 83-84 season started, Jock said if Kentucky doesn’t win the championship they should turn Rupp Arena into an ice skating rink. Then before the 85-86 season he said Kentucky’s shoes look like space boots(Sutton’s first year when they switched to the Kentucky Dunks Nikes). When you think about it, some of the stuff he said was kind of funny. He was UL’s version of Matt Jones. I think my dad listened just to get mad while UL fans listen to KSR for the same.

There seems to be some kind of disconnect here - all the posters who actually knew/know Jock seem to have a level of respect, while those who's only connection is via his tenure as the Louisville color man despise him.

I think this is correct. U of L fans don't like Matt b/c he's on Louisville radio poking fun at U of L. UK fans didn't like Jock because (particularly at a time when this was not done) he was on radio in the state of Kentucky poking fun at UK.

He was a horrible color commentator for those that didn't get to hear him. Of course, UK fans were spoiled listening to the legend Cawood Ledford. But Jock was just awful.

I was a Sophomore in '79, did your Dad ever tell about the time he shattered a backboard? We printed a picture of it for the school newspaper. Your Dad was a beast (and a helluva nice guy)

Bingo. This is the truth.

UL hate preceded Jock. Denny the Crum was the ignitor of the Flames.

1. My memory is kinda fuzzy as it's been over 40 yrs now, but as I recall Jock's '79 Lafayette team was absolutely awesome, one of the best in KY HS history. I think at least three D1 players were on that team: Dirk, Tony Wilson who went to WKU and Junior Johnson who went to UC.
2. I recall Jock saying that coming out of HS in 1979 Dirk was at least equally good as Isiah Thomas. Isiah went on to be an all time college and NBA great, and Jock blamed UK/Joe B for ruining Dirk.

Jock Sutherland went out of his way to try to destroy UK and especially Joe B. It was personal not based on results of anything on the basketball court. One would think he may have wanted an assistant position on the UK squad when Dirk Minniefield signed with the Cats.

What ever it was Jock came over the radio waves looking like a fool because every week night he blasted Joe B Hall and said things that would make you want to whip his puny ***.

I am thankful he made peace with those he mistreated but as a fan, I will not forget him and the harm he did. The two biggest anti-UK basketball people in Kentucky history were Jock and Billy Reed. Billy Reed ranks #1 in my book. He is a drunk hater

He certainly was. Until Denny Crum came to town I had no ill will towards UL. But Denny Crum ended that. He started it all and I am thankful UK has owned them ever since they were ordered to play Louisville every year.

Had UL and Crum seen what the future held as far as UK dominance I doubt they would have insisted on the game and cried until it happened.

Jock started the ruination of Dirk. He enabled poor decisions by him in HS by looking the other way. My memory of Jock in HS was that he was never, you know, AT the HS. Roll some basketballs out for gym class and be on his way. He probably had a real estate listing he needed to show.

He was an empty gas bag with nothing but that ridiculous good old boy obsequiousness.

Remember when Denny the Crum said Ricky Gallon was better than Robey, Phillips and Danny Hall COMBINED!?

TWA Tony Wilson Airline. Good career st Western. Junior Johnson started 4 years at Cincinnati. Dirk was the stud. Rose played at Transy. Kenny Minnifield at Pikeville. Hatton could play. Great team. My first Sweet Sixteen. Played Caverna and Sutherland’s pre game quote was Lafayette has more kids skipping every day than Caverna has in their school.
