I kinda like having other SEC schools being a power in basketball. Hoping UF doesn't fall off. LSU might be ready to take up the slack by UF basketball.
Did they fire Johnny Jones? I didn't hear about that.
Did they fire Johnny Jones? I didn't hear about that.
Did you hear about LSU recruits?
Honestly lost on what that means.
Rick Barnes, Ben Howland, Bruce Pearl, Mike Anderson, Cal of course, Frank Martin, Andy Kennedy. All those guys are above Mike White or Chris Mack.
Florida and their croc wearing fans are toast.
The Gators were terrible this past season, and will likely lose their top recruit this upcoming season. I realize whoever they pick as a coach is a big factor, but unless its Gregg Marshall, I don't see Chris Mack or Archie Miller keeping Florida at the "Donovan level". With Donovan gone, I see Tennessee, Miss St, Auburn, and Arkansas passing up florida on the SEC pecking order due to their big coaching hires/current coaches.
I will love and enjoy the demise of florida basketball. Their fans were some of the absolute worst. 19 years of caring less about florida basketball unless Kentucky came to town had to weigh on Donovan. The Florida demise will be as sweet as sugar.
(blows kisses to the angry florida fans reading this)
Been there, done that. We've won national titles with 5 different coaches. Don't expect Cal to be the last, history has proven that.
Miller or mack make them tourney competitors, top 25, but a step behind elite except maybe in sporadic year. Won't keep rolling at all if they don't invest some $in the program. it seems that had really got to billy d
How long? not long---they just fell off with a no name hire.

Foley will find someone good to run the Florida basketball. Usually, the candidate is a young, hungry coach that will take this great opportunity to prove themselves. Additionally, the state of Florida produces a lot of talent on an annual basis. The new coach will just have to lock down some of the top basketball talent!
Get em Willl MusCHUMP!Everyone has to start somewhere. Many of the national title winning coaches at UF (see my previous post) did not win titles at other places before coming to Florida. The trick is to to try to find the up & coming coach (Florida AD has a good track record of that), give them resources and see what they can do with their opportunity.

Mike White is a terrific hire. Foley got a young Billy D. Arch will get a big time job whenever he wants, but White fits better at #UF
Fran Fraschilla @franfraschilla · 1h1 hour ago
If you wanted to hire a Billy Donovan clone, Michael White would be your guy. Same intensity, same maturity, same class. UF made a good hire
Dana O'Neil @ESPNDanaOneil · 1h1 hour ago
Michael White may not be 'sexy' hire but neither was Billy Donovan in 1996. Respect for Jeremy Foley for targeting winner over splash.
Jay Bilas @JayBilas · 1h1 hour ago
Michael White is a GREAT hire for Jeremy Foley and Florida! He's a star!
White has excellent ties to Florida recruiting!
Hopefully soon we will be asking the same thing bout dook and coach k...
ok so you list the top three schools in wins as the only three that can sustain it but the number 4 team in duke has no chance? Hahaha ok... Based on titles we have surpassed Kansas and have for a while and we are tied with UNC. I don't buy it Duke and UK are the top two programs in the country ANY coach would leave wherever they are for those jobsTHIS!!!
Just like UConn is slowly fading off the map - Although they won a miracle NC two years ago you can just tell they are falling off in recruiting and before too long they'll be a third-tier program. Kinda like what happened to UMass and Memphis after Cal left. My guess is that you'll see this stuff happen to several schools in the next decade like Duke, Michigan State, and Louisville to name a few. It happened to UCLA once Wooden left - although they had spotty success over the years and won the 1995 NC, they are not a true "blue blood" anymore. Same thing also happened to IU after Bobby Knight left - spotty success, but nothing like what they experienced under Knight. I believe Duke will see moderate success beyond K, but nothing like what they are used to. Probably be something like we experienced with Tubby - a good coach who wins 76% of his games, has his teams ranked in the top 25 (usually in the 15 to 25 range), but isn't going to get to the Final Four very often (if at all) and someone who will see recruiting steadily decrease over time.
There have only been three programs who have been able to sustain success beyond legendary coaches and throughout the decades - UK, UNC, and KU. Those three programs will always be who they are because their pedigree is so strong. It's like talking about Notre Dame, Alabama, and Oklahoma in football.
BTW, I, for one, hope Florida stays up where they are. Some UK fans may be happy that this may spell the end of Florida's successful run in basketball, but those same people would be wishing for the good ole days again when, three years from now, the Florida rivalry isn't what it once was. I loved it when we'd play them in the O'Dome (and vice versa). It was always a rowdy atmosphere and you never really knew if we'd win the game, so if we did win it made it that much more exciting.
Depends on the hire. Attractive job. It's been proven as a place you can win big. Talent-rich state. Coaches seem to love working for Foley.
The Gators made the Final Four two years before Donovan arrived. They will be there again. They are done for good unless something shocking happens. They will make NCAA Tourneys here and there, but do not see them making another Final Four for a long long time, if ever.
I guess between now and the end of time, it's possible. However, I wouldn't wager on it happening again anytime soon. The Gators made the Final Four two years before Donovan arrived. They will be there again.![]()

Florida will be fine; they have too many resources to not be. Florida SHOULD be better than Kentucky at all sports that's not basketball. Large population + near a beach + large endowment = success. My nine-year old nephew could coach Florida to wins over Kentucky in most sports; they have a significant advantage. Like one expert said "there is no excuse for not being elite at Florida".
Not Bilas, though. He doesn't give a crap about that stuff, and he's smarter than all of them.Lol. Florida could have hired Tom Crean and the talking heads would be racing each other to the top of the praise heap. It is a free shot at sucking up to the guy. I hope you aren't counting on that as a reflection of what the guy will do.

I get you guys giving the Gator fans a little bit of a ribbing, but seriously - the level of antagonism in the thread seems a little miscalibrated. It's not like we're talking about a Louisville hire - and if Florida is 3rd or 6th best in the conference, it really doesn't impact us. I'm actually excited for some of the good new coaching blood in the conference. Howland and Pearl going forward should give Cal a slight push many years, and the rest of the names should do just enough to maintain a couple SEC schools in the lower part of the top 25 (a couple between Barnes, Martin, Stallings, maybe Avery and the A&M staff).
Where will the new Florida guy fall? Probably behind Howland, Pearl, and Barnes, but it's not really t hat big of a deal to me.
It started last year. Donovan knew it was only going to get worse, so he jetted.
There seems to be a sense of relief here that Donovan has left Florida.
While it's unlikely that his successor will match Donovan's accomplishments, he just may surprise you. Time will tell . . . . . . . . . .![]()
Coach k will never retire.
