I think Ole Miss got a little lucky with the timing of the AD hiring, etc. Keith Carter didn’t hire Luke, so firing him wasn’t his admission of making the wrong hire. I kind of think that’s where Cohen is at. Everyone knows he’s stubborn, that’s never been argued, and I think he’s digging his heels in and refusing to acknowledge the hire didn’t work. Which is crazy, because the hire was widely applauded. It’s not like he took a wild chance on some no name guy. I could understand his refusal to acknowledge the obvious if that was the case.
But, you see this across all sports at the D1 and pro levels. It’s very hard for successful men to admit publicly that they made the wrong decision. Their egos are too fragile.
As an outsider looking in, the question I ask myself is “if State hired a new AD two weeks ago, would Moorhead still be the coach by the end of this week?” I’d say it’s 50/50 at best. Ole Miss is a living example of how quick you can turnaround fan apathy, but it takes action. You aren’t going to beg apathetic fans into caring again. You’ve got to give them something to care about.
