How does this performance not get Cohen fired?

This. One donor—who doesn't donate to athletics—made a call, fronted around $8 million, and said "find the rest." They did, and canned Luke.

We laugh at Ole Miss any chance we get, but when you're one of the lead stories on Good Morning America, Today Show, etc., for losing a game BECAUSE A PLAYER FAKE PISSED, that's rough.

I hope our major donors are embarrassed enough by Tutor Gate, the Gay/Shrader incident, and this Music City Bowl to do something about it.

Do you actually think thats what unfolded??

I have no clue. I've heard some people claim Cohen got cold feet. I've heard some people claim Cohen was ready to pull the trigger and some of the boosters ponying up for the costs got cold feet. Based on how much BS was going around, it's hard to credit anything. I think it seems pretty obvious firing Moorhead was at least being seriously considered by the administration. But whether it started and ended with Cohen and Keenum discussing it, or got to the point of taking the temperature of the room of boosters that would be looked to to pay for it, or got to the point that it was the plan before changing directions at the last second, I have no clue although I sort of doubt the latter.

Cohen's only possible excuse is being vetoed by the boosters and/or Keenum in such a way that going against it would have put his job status into jeopardy. He didn't need the boosters' money to make this happen. He's put back SO much money and avoided investing in the present of our program. Today seems like a pretty damn rainy day, with the levee of our future threatening to break.

I think Ole Miss got a little lucky with the timing of the AD hiring, etc. Keith Carter didn’t hire Luke, so firing him wasn’t his admission of making the wrong hire. I kind of think that’s where Cohen is at. Everyone knows he’s stubborn, that’s never been argued, and I think he’s digging his heels in and refusing to acknowledge the hire didn’t work. Which is crazy, because the hire was widely applauded. It’s not like he took a wild chance on some no name guy. I could understand his refusal to acknowledge the obvious if that was the case.

But, you see this across all sports at the D1 and pro levels. It’s very hard for successful men to admit publicly that they made the wrong decision. Their egos are too fragile.

As an outsider looking in, the question I ask myself is “if State hired a new AD two weeks ago, would Moorhead still be the coach by the end of this week?” I’d say it’s 50/50 at best. Ole Miss is a living example of how quick you can turnaround fan apathy, but it takes action. You aren’t going to beg apathetic fans into caring again. You’ve got to give them something to care about.

I don't know, but I seriously doubt Cohen has the ability to go against Keenum in any way on a number that big without it putting his job in jeopardy. Just because funds are athletic department funds doesn't mean Cohen can spend them unless and until Keenum objects. I suspect Keenum has to sign off on a number that big and he probably at least keeps the foundation board on the loop on things like that since they will ultimately be signing checks for a lot of it even if individual boosters pony up the money. For Cohen to even lobby boosters to pressure Keenum would potentially put him on the chopping block next time there is an excuse for it.
