The most important part, it is not when he lifts off.

You guys keep talking about "gathering" but that's NOT what the rule states. The rules specifically says that the defender needs to establish legal guarding position "before the (airborne) player left the playing court". Doesn't say anything about 'gathering' for your shot.

I honestly think some of you are confusing this with the decision as to whether to call a foul a shooting foul or not.

However, in this case I don’t feel the Vandy player established legal guarding position in time. He hopped out of the restricted circle as Brooks was gathering and hadn’t established position outside of the circle until Brooks was in the air.

I think it's fair to ask if it's legal guarding position at all. Is it legal guarding position jumping in front of someone with the sole intent of falling down?

Also, many of our notorious scoring droughts just so happen to coincide with the refs going on a flop calling spree. See auburn as a perfect example.

Pretty sure gathering is an nba term that was started so James Harden and a bunch of other clowns in the nba could get their shot off without being called for walking every time. It’s a joke. You get two steps and no more. Go back to the Vandy game. Disu stole a pass and was fumbling the ball as he passed mid court. When he picked up his dribble he was out of stride so he short stepped and then took his two allowed steps and dunked. He walked but it wasn’t called. The question is why wasn’t it called? And therein lies the problem.
