Look how much emphasis the ref puts into making the charge call. He really wanted everyone to know he was making the call. Again their egos tell them we are paying to watch them.

This! Why refs don't have to answer to the media is beyond me. That alone would add some accountability.
No clue but SEC refs are the absolute worst.
If it was TV Teddy he would've galloped to the 3-point line before giving the charge signal.
I think officiating's been better this year for the most part. Refs love to play to a wild home crowd if they're the underdog. It allows them to gesture with enthusiasm/flex their muscles, bully the coach and generally act like some badass, and not having fans in the stands has taken that away. But last night was tough to watch.
NBA officiating is on another level. There's too much favoritism and corruption in college hoops for it to ever change.
Another thing I thought of, if a ref misses a call that changes the outcome of a game (or one could even argue betting line) then he gets suspended for a week. Second time 2 weeks then he goes under review for his job.
If I messed up on my job as much as these refs do in 1 game I would no longer have said job. Yet everyone keeps saying it happens fast and bang bang but man it seems they miss it so much you would think some improvement by now.
It is very apparent to me that 90% of refs hate Cal or Kentucky, and to that I say I don't care as long as you call it fair. But you can definitely tell they are emotionally evolved.

From a rules standpoint is this.
Another thing is Physical fitness test that included mile run time or "10 in a minute" baseline to baseline or "17 in a minute" sideline to sideline.
Also, it shouldnt take 20+ years to become a college official and then be such a small group of old officials flying all over the country. Rules are Rules. Either you understand them and can enforce them in real time or you cant/ There should be extensive written test, scenario based test, and virtual reality or game film breakdown test to get certified as a NCAA official and then you enter at the D3 level. Having a bigger pool of truly qualified (physically to keep up) officials also helps limit these big ego officials w personal vendettas against universities and coaches. Or the officials that think they are the show and instigate via following players or coaches and engaging in staredowns and dramatics. Those instances should be heavily punished.
He was not set bro, regardless it was a caught up in the moment call by the official. Just didn’t know for sure so let’s award the home team just like the touchy fouls at the end when Vandy was in bonus.
Exactly. No other profession allows such ineptitude. Not only do they allow it, they reward it. It's an extremely exclusive gig and it's rare anyone breaks into the circle.
Step 1-5 should be fix the nonsense charge calls. Unless something is an obvious charge, it's a block. If you aren't actively defending, it should never be a charge. Flopping, falling, and sliding under people is not defense.
Really that's 90% of it. Fix the nonsense charges and that immediately fixes most everything
The problem is every person has their own perspective on calls. If emotions get involved, watch out. Not sure how to fix the ref situation. Someone this morning was calling ksr on the radio and said something about how the refs make more calls against UK and as a conference, we are #1 for fouls called.
To me that looks like the guy was set. But this one of the calls where I would like to see a play on. The NCAA should be encouraging this type of athleticism not hindering it. Maybe then the games would be more watchable.
Media has it's bias's, they are human, but nowhere near what you want to act like. And the ref's get calls correct at a significantly higher rate than message board posters who are inherently biased.
There are diverging opinions in this thread which should tell you the call was close and that you can't criticize the ref for calling it either way when they're calling it on the fly.
The problem with having the refs answer questions is that they will just come out and quote the section of the rule book and say that is how they saw it at the time.
Maybe a centralized review, where other refs watch a tape of the game and mark the calls that they would have made and see how the two compare. Of course this does not account for the fact the camera is at a different angle/view than a ref on the floor.

Get rid of "conference refs". Everybody goes into one pool of refs.
Have a group of 10 or so former players, coaches, and refs grade them...
Divide them into 3 groups:
Power 5 (which get paid the most), Mid-Majors, and small.
They get evaluated every month and can be raised or lower level depending on how they do.

- Change to a quarters system like every other level of basketball.
Less disqualifications and sitting talent for long periods in foul trouble...and fewer bonus FTs since the bonus starts over each quarter so when fouls happen just side out = more game action and games decided by players not a FT shooting contest or game of attrition the college game has become and really hard to watch and enjoy at times even in years we are winning.
Now just convince the coaches to agree to it. Coach K gets 1/2 his wins playing the foul game to thier favor. So won’t happen till he leaves.

That may be the operative word, (fixed). No just kidding, but the one thing I would do to help it is encourage the zebras to get in better position to make the call. To many times the bad calls are caused because of the ref being behind two players and they are guessing what happened. That dunk was awesome!
They have to justify some of these horrible calls. Who oversees this BS... same guys .. it never improves.. they blow some many calls.
Excellent post ! This would take a lot of the BS officials no one gives a damn about. It is a absolute joke watching some of these calls.
Officiating in college should build on NBA rules. Players should be prepped for NBA calls based on calls in college. College officiating is terrible just plain terrible. Block charge is only one of the many problem. Way too much touch foul nonsense in college. NBA is a mans game. College should prepare players for that game. Yes, even the players who won’t be going to the NBA.

It can’t be fixed because the NCAA would first have to admit there’s a problem, and they are not going to.
That's my theory. Who in their right mind would want that job? So right away, you're not getting the best and the brightest. You're getting whoever is willing to take the job.
If they mess up and are replaced (which never happens because there aren't enough refs), their replacement will not be the best and the brightest, either. And they are probably sports fans, which means they have favorites and non-favorites...not to mention their relationships with the coaches.
They're human. Like someone posted, let each coach have a challenge or two.

This is an important distinction. What people refer to as “being set” often means that the defender is standing still in a spot waiting to be decked by the offensive player. You can be moving and draw a charge if you are in legal guarding position. This is more commonly seen in on-ball primary defense than the secondary defender moving over for a charge, but both are possible.
However, in this case I don’t feel the Vandy player established legal guarding position in time. He hopped out of the restricted circle as Brooks was gathering and hadn’t established position outside of the circle until Brooks was in the air.
For starters, the SEC should stop hiring refs that have been fired from other conferences. Implement a independent review board that monitor and grade refs. If they consistently call games poorly then they don’t call games anymore. Not all refs are bad but I do believe the SEC has some subpar refs that need to go. It should be like any other job, if you do a **** job you get fired.
