From 8 to 10 conference games? No inside knowledge but my opinion it would be much more likely that divisions go away and we keep a couple of permanent opponents. That way we actually play the teams in our conference.

So you need 11 votes to get entry. I think that's interesting because Florida can't unilaterally block Florida State or Miami, South Carolina can't unilaterally block Clemson, Tennessee, Vandy, & Arkansas together can't block Memphis, Georgia can't block Georgia Tech, Kentucky can't block Louisville, and most importantly Texas A&M can't unilaterally block Texas.
I'm also a little surprised it's only 2/3 (10 members) to get voted out.
Their media payout is currently in the same ballpark as every SEC school and will probably be less when the new ESPN contract goes into effect in 2023. I think each SEC school is going to see a $20 million bump when that happens. At one point, LHN was only worth about $15 million to them annually.
He's going to be outvoted 13-1.
There likely is no real "gentleman's agreement" between A&M, Florida, Georgia, Sourg Carolina to block in-state schools, and even if there is, are Florida State and Clemson going to try to become #17 and #18 anyway? I doubt it.

This has been talked about for years ... 40 years ago, I was the student representative on an SEC expansion committee ...we had a number of meeting over a two year period and what we were looking at is bringing teams in that would dominate and compete at a national level in every sport..for example, we were looking at U of Houston because of their dominance in Golf, track, and had a national brand in Basketball. We also considered South Carolina, Clemson and Louisville as there was an effort to upgrade basketball. We looked at Texas and Texas A&M because of their size and resources, we looked at Florida State and Miami. There was a ton of pushback on Miami because we only needed 1 private school to get around anti-trust legislation and federal and state reporting requirements of public institutions. That's why all the conferences have at least one private school....if one school in the conference is private, the conference and all the associated activities around athletics are considered private....it was fun but as it turned out....fruitless at that time.

will never happen for texas - maybe OU or OSU and NCState but never tu. this may be a way for OU and tu to let big10 know they're looking to make a move.
Reports are that aTm and Mizzou are against this. Only 2 more schools would need to vote “no” to cancel this move. State and Ole Miss should be those schools.

The more money that has been pumped in the SEC the better it has been for state. For as good as Bama has become (and there is no denying that) we have really closed the gap on other teams. It’s no longer an automatic *** kicking when we play LSU, Auburn, Georgia, Florida. Now I’m not saying we don’t lose those games more than we win them, I’m simply saying it’s not the automatic loss it used to be.
Besides I feel like Bama success is primarily driven by Saban. Once he’s out of the picture, I highly doubt the dominance continues at the same level.
Regardless if UT/OU join, I hope we are in the final years of there even being divisions. Time to go the route of MBB in all sports, no divisions and two teams with best Conf records play in Atlanta at end of year.
The separation has already occurred at this point though. State is not in the same ballpark with other mid-level P5 teams at this point. So what does it matter if you further separate from the Iowa States and Marylands of the world? Imagine the following schedule for State:

I think we can probably get more wins over Texas + Oklahoma in the next decade than Alabama + Auburn, so I'm fine with 2 8-team divisions
Either Texas or OU joining the SEC would mean a SEC payout cut to current members. Neither would bring enough new viewers of any kind to the SEC packages to offset the pie being sliced more times. The timing of this leak tells you everything you need to know about it. UT couldn't stand the thought of every media outlet in Texas talking about a rising SEC A&M today without them being mentioned.

Have you been lately? Serious question. The last 5 years have not been good to it from a visitor perspective, but still a lot to do there. Just now lots of homeless and what comes with that downtown. There have been a lot of tech jobs added, but I have been going a long time, and it was noticeably different last time.
They brought in all the homeless..

The SEC is about to renegotiate its tv contracts. CBS shopping in the bargain bin is over. We are about to get NFL money. Add Texas and OU and the money will be even NFL'er.

They will have voting membership and elect a representative body that will negotiate a revenue sharing plan. Recruits will enter their names into an SEC draft and money will be slotted by the pick. Schools won't be paying the players... but the SEC will.
The SEC is going to become the NFL-Lite.
And then.. one day.. everybody is going to say.. do we really care if they're students? Do we really think they should leave after 3-4 years when we've invested so much in them? Then it will finally just be a pro team wearing the jersey of a university and that is paid by the conference funding the league.

No, it wouldn’t. SEC Network would gain no new footprint, and likely TX would insist on keeping the LHN anyway (which would mean they get 100% of TV revenue from their home games, plus their SEC Network cut for road games). It would definitely be a pay-cut for everyone unless Texas made a bunch of concessions they aren’t going to make AND the SEC Network way overvalued their impact in terms of new markets.
I don’t care if it’s a footprint expansion or not (although it is with Oklahoma and I think you could make a case that more Austin and San Antonio TVs are tuned in watching Texas), Texas is arguably the biggest brand in college sports. Adding Texas is not just about getting more viewers in Texas, although it’ll help, it’s about adding more viewers nationwide.
But the SEC and all public members release financials and details each year.
What 'associated activities' are you referring to?
Adding two of the largest brands in college football with footprint all over the country would not bring in more money??
If that's true then the only footprint that Notre Dame has an is Indiana.

Consolidation is coming no matter what. Adding Texas and OU to the SEC would undoubtedly mean more money for SEC members due to the addition of two of the most storied brands in college football. I believe there will ultimately be three major conferences— the SEC, some combination of B12/ACC/Notre Dame and eastern teams and a Western conference comprised of a consolidation of Pac12 and and other western teams.
State would be a beneficiary of being part of an even stronger SEC not only in terms of money but also tv and visibility which would only further strengthen recruiting in football.
This kind of change is coming. Might as well embrace it.
