Not a Cal defender, but I believe he's still the right guy for the job, but things have to change. It's been 5 seasons since we made the Final Four. Since we won our first title in 1948, we have had the following 5 year or more droughts of not making the Final Four:

1958/59 - 1964/65: 7 seasons
1966/67 - 1973/74: 8 seasons
1978/79 - 1982/83: 5 seasons
1984/85 - 1991/92: 8 seasons
1998/99 - 2009/10: 12 seasons
2015/16 - Present: 5 seasons

So, 7 decades in a row, we have had years that have been [art of a drought of 5 or more seasons of no Final Fours. As for the OP's question, IMO, he gets 2 years to right the ship. If things are still stumbling along, it would be time for him to go. Unfortunately, he'll still have 6 years remaining on his contract and a massive buyout.

I’ve never heard someone pick and choose the years that could count on someone’s resume. Lol Why doesn’t 2009-2017 count? 😂 You’re ridiculously ignorant! 😂
Again, it takes common sense, which you don't have.

I'll repeat it for you, since you didn’t comprehend the first time.

Cal didn’t have 4 final fours, a title and an elite 8 when he was offered the uk job in 2009.

Here is what he did have on his resume:
1996 final four… ..vacated
2008 final four… ..vacated

So, isn't that the standard? We don't know how Eric Musselman, Beard or Brad Stevens would do at UK, but you can bet they'll accomplish alot more at UK that they did at any if their previous jobs, just like Cal, Tubby and Pitino did.

If we just SUCK again next year I'll be turning on Cal even if it's unlikely we can afford to fire him. But I don't see that happening. If we're a middling team that's getting in the tournament but losing 2nd or 3rd round and not really competing for a FF, 2 years. If we're a good, top 15 team legitimately competing for FFs, getting to a couple regional finals, I think we'd have to miss 3 more (8 straight tournaments) before I was convinced we need to do something different. We've had stretches of 6 and 7 straight years without a FF under Rupp, 8 straight bridging Rupp and Hall, 8 straight through Hall, Sutton, Pitino, and then 12 straight through Tubby into first year of Cal. Long stretches like this suck, but a coach that's taken us there 4 times deserves as much of a leash as Rupp and Hall had, as long as he has us truly competitive.

First of all don’t put words in my mouth, I had nothing in mind. You made the thread so I thought you had someone in mind and was interested to see who that might be.

The thing that gets lost in the whole fire Cal movement is who do we get when he is gone. I think of Shaka Smart after his run at VCU. He had so many thinking he was the next big D1 coach but that didn’t work out well for Texas.
LMAO, you told me not to put words in your mouth, then proceeded to tell my that I was the one that created the thread. Can't make this stuff up.

I simply answered your question, which is asked every time one of these threads comes up, but nobody likes it when I reply with "what was Cal's resume like in 2009 when he was offered the UK job?" You asked the question, I gave a thorough answer.

You are forgetting Cal got us to these level. UK basketball has not been on this level since Rupp. Why would we downgrade by hiring Musselman or Beard. That would set our program back 10 years. If and when Cal steps away, Stevens would be #1 on my list.

Well, lets go with a guy that has two full seasons and two final fours vacated. He needs to be able to recruit and probably be Italian. That’s what qualified Cal for the job.

You don't get to compare Cal's 2009-2017 achievements to everyone else in the country, that's not how it works.

But in my opinion, I think there are a lot of coaches out there that can equal what Cal has done at UK post 2015. How hard is that when you have the stage UK gives you? 2 elite 8's, a sweet 16, 2nd round exit and a 9-16 record. You mean to tell me there isn't a coach out there that can equal that? Tubby did better than that.

2009-2015 ain't happening again, Cal couldn’t replicate it himself, so it's not right to have those standards for his replacement. That’s what you had in mind though, don't lie and say you didn't.
So what are you insinuating with the two vacated final 4S? How is that relevant to his time here? Sounds a lot like opposing fans harped on when he came here.

How many more seasons can he miss the NCAAT? He’s missed 2 of the last 9

Or does matter if he never makes the FF or NCAAT again? Your sticking with him no matter how bad it gets
So you are doing “reruns” now. Ran out of original ways to ***** about Cal?

Doesn't matter what was his fault or what wasn't his fault, he had two final four seasons vacated on his watch.

We blast Bruce Pearl and Rick Pitino for the same things, but since it was Cal, it's okay? No. It happened on Cal's watch twice at two different schools, which means it could've easily happen here too. When you recruit nba talent, you invite crookedness into your program.

Cal didn’t take UK to these levels Ellen, get that thought out of your mind now. UK was great before Cal got here and it will be great when he leaves. You're a Cal fan or a troll, no UK fan says what you just said.

Rick Pitino hired hookers for kids, get out of here!! DR ACT isn’t even close to that even if Cal was involved, he was not! Lol

UK was not great when Cal got here. 😂 Your lack of intellect is showing!!

Go back to the post I replied to, Fossil, you're a smart dude, you can figure it out.
I saw it Jeff and I thought it was a valid point until you mention those two final fours. he did take those teams to the final 4 and was exonerated of wrong doing. Why you mention that seems to have no value to his coaching accomplishment other than to cast a shadow over him prior to his arrival here. That’s what other fan bases have been doing since he arrived here.

Is it possible on this website to have a debate that doesn’t include trying to make someone look stupid? Or is that where we are as a fan base after this dreadful season.

In the last four NCAA tournaments played, 2017-2018-2019-2021 - Kentucky was a last second desperation shot in a horrifically officiated game (against the Cats) and an Overtime from going to two Final Fours.

By comparison, Mike K at Duke went FIVE tournaments from 2005-2009 without advancing past the Sweet 16. He never got close to a Final Four. Then he won two more titles in the next six years.

When a coach has a long track record for getting to the Final Four six times, and coming close many other times only the truly short sighted wants to change until there is overwhelming evidence the coach has lost it.

Two very near misses in the last four years is not that at all.

We haven't been to a final 4 in 5 tournaments. Not coming up on 7.
If we go to atleast the elite 8 80% of the time we make the tournament, idc if he misses one every 8/9 years. That's todays game. To stand out and have a chance you have to be different.

That’s Jeffy. He bashes anyone that doesn’t agree with him. When you get the better of him, then he accuses you of being someone else or pulls something else and slings it. Just plow right on. He’s basically the equivalent of a recalcitrant teen.

You left out that the two vacated final fours were beyond his control, as stated by the NCAA itself. Yes, I know that doesn’t fit your trash Cal at all costs narrative. Just pointing out your cherry picked facts. Again.

Coach K usually finishes the deal once he gets there.
Cal usually chokes!
Cal should never be mentioned in the same breath as coach K and I hate Duke and can’t stand coach K!

P.S. close only counts in horseshoes.
We don’t hang banners for elite 8’s but we do Final Fours!

Rupp Rafters existed back then?

Come on man, this is such a lame comment. The fanbase had to chisel messages on a stone tablet back then and were you actually alive? Come on now.
Your inexperience is showing. There was basketball happening before you and most of us remember it.
You could learn from the past once you stop thinking you're so damn smart.

I know some of you don't like to or struggle to read, but this is a long post because I do care about our program and our fanbase and I'm tired of little shots and jabs without much fact tearing us apart. If it's too long just skip. No need for your little jabs.

There are only a handful of full-blown dolts that actually want Cal fired and keep trying to divide the fanbase. They are agenda-driven and don't want to discuss facts or use common sense. Most are just pissed after that embarrassing season which is understandable. I'm not a just Cal fan I'm a UK fan and always have been since I was a kid cheering for Kenny SkyWalker, Jim Master, and all the greats. When It's time for a coach to go I will be all for it, but this isn't it with Cal.

This was one of the most bizarre seasons of college BB I have ever seen so I will consider it a one-off until shown otherwise. Those harping on 2013 as the same thing are really reaching. That was the year after winning a title and we lost our best player to a serious injury. They finished 21-12, 12-6 in the SEC tied for 2nd. The team probably should have gotten an NCAA invite, but back then if you lost a top player to injury it really mattered and counted against you in the committee's eyes. Nowadays teams seem to get a pass on it.

Some are saying it just wasn't this past year and has been bad. When I look back at the recent years I don't see it that way.
2016-2017 Fox, Monk, Bam, and 2 guys from Ky was a team I loved and who beat Ball's *** and took down Witch St, UCLA until getting completely cheated by the Cheats. They had beaten UNC that year and would have again if not for some flat-out cheating. ARK also got cheated the game before by the Cheats. The refs seemed to be helping the Cheats the entire way that year. We lost by 2 and most UK fans still know we should have won that game, made the FF and had a good shot at #9.

2017-2018 It wasn't a great year and was a complete rebuild after losing 8 to what should have been a title team. Yet that team was fun at times once Shai took over. PJ and Vanderbilt got into a grove, but then Vanderbilt went down and that team was never the same again. However, they did rally and win the SECT. That team went the way PJ went and would lose in the SS when PJ missed 12 FTs going 8 of 20 and we lost by 3.

2018-2019 PJ returned and he and RT were great inside. It was one of my favorite teams in a while. Herro was exciting and we were a well-rounded team. They went 30-7 and beat a tough #19 Wofford team than a good #11 HOU team before falling to #14 AUB in OT after beating them in both the prior meetings earlier in the year. Down the stretch, RT got hurt and we seemed to lose some rhythm and then PJ got hurt and we got him back just in time, but they never looked like they had earlier in the year. It sucked to lose to AUB, but it was a fun year and a good team.

2019-2020 Never got a chance. Was the team most on here say they want. Upperclassman fused with a few good Freshman and a 3 guard offense that really caused issues for opposing teams. They went 25-6 and won the SEC by 4 games. They also won big matchups with #1 Mich St, #3 UL, and @ #18 TT which looked like one of the craziest atmospheres I have seen. For some reason, people on here want to say this team would have just flopped in the 2nd or 3rd round. Even though 2 of our biggest issues in the NCAAT these past years have been injuries and FT shooting and we were heading into the Postseason healthy and one of the best FT shooting teams in the country. Definitely Cal's best. Pretty nice when your 7 footer goes to the line and you know he is going to knock both of them down. Quickly won SEC POY. I really liked this team. They won 9 of their last 10 including a huge comeback @FL.

So when I look back at the last 4 teams before this year I liked them. I was excited during the season and always felt like we had a chance. That's usually what I'm asking for, a chance. To believe we can get to the FF and win it all and I did most of these terrible years some of you keep marking as the bad times. I'm not making excuses for these teams, but injuries haven't been kind to us and we have had some cap breaks.

This year was inexcusable even in the perfect storm and unlucky times. It showed me Cal does need to make changes to get us back to those FF's and title shots. But when just the year before we were right there I can't see a complete overhaul or firing our coach. I do think Cal saw it too and is making changes as we speak. There were some really nice players out there on the transfer market and we haven't gone after them unless they are a guard for the most part. In the past, we wouldn't go into a year without trying to have at least 3-4 bigs. We have 2 and only one player over 6ft9.

I want back to the FF and to hang #9 yesterday. I feel like this upcoming year will be very telling and if it is anything like this past one there are no excuses and maybe it is time for Cal to move on. But I think we will see another FF in the next 3 years and if we don't I will be let down. I know it hasn't been perfect but if you haven't enjoyed UK BB from 2016-2020 I think you may want unrealistic production. I feel like we have had some really good and likable teams over that stretch. I'm still proud to be a UK fanbase even though this year did fracture it some and I look forward to the days of old where we are united and going after trolls and rivals as one like we use to instead of each other.

Kentucky should never miss the NCAAT...I'd be ok with a F4 every 4-6 years and a title every 7-10 years.

he needs to have a team that is in the convo for a F4 almost every year (ranked top 10)

Blame for the last 5 or 6? Are you saying that the last 6 seasons have been bad compared to KY's historical standards?
Where did I mention “historical standards”? Whenever anyone mentions Calipari’s record they talk about what a great job he’s done even though the lions share of accomplishments occurred the first 6 years. There's no denying if his first five years mirrored the last five then this is a very different conversation. So the point is there’s a trend and it’s not favorable. Should he get a chance to right the ship? Absolutely. But I’m not confident because he no longer gets elite players and he needs them.

Thinking about who is out there if Cal retired today who do you think would be better?
I see this argument all the time and it always makes me chuckle. There are a bunch of coaches who are better X and O guys. There was a time when Cal was an elite recruiter and that set him apart from many other coaches, but I’m not sure that the case any longer.

I really do not have to be a Cal defender to look at (facts) about each season. This was a terrible year using any type measurement you choose. It was a bad year.
You seem to have an endless supply of Cal hate posts that you are asking others to agree with you about . My question to you , How many more repetitive posts do you start before you realize that most on here think you are somewhat insane? You are no more a UK fan than anyone else but you seem to obsess about putting out a new question to get people to talk about their dislike of Cal. I know I can choose to pass them by like I usually do but this is mid April. You have been at it for months. Get a f**king life.

I noticed you mentioned posters as crazy that wants Cal fired and they keep sowing division. Your novel means nothing because you refuse to address the handful of Cal supporters that go thread to thread hurling insults at those that expect better from our coach. So you did a lot of typing for naught. If you refuse to mention both sides, then this long post is nothing but a sunshine post, meant to divide even more.

I was answering the OPs question and explaining why I felt that way. You know, staying on topic, or maybe you don't know. SO that post you live on about wanting Cal out of here. He isn't going anywhere so your 1000+ posts on just that one thread are for naught.
