the Cal nut huggers have conviced me. We should just shut the school down when Cal leaves.
The cult of Cal is an incredibly short sighted bunch. To them, Kentucky basketball didn’t exist before Cal and can’t possibly exist after.
I’ll disregard the insults and name calling, and address the substance. I can only speak for myself....I am well aware of our history, how we are unique even among bluebloods for sustained success across decades and multiple coaches. Three comments:
1. Calipari’s sheer list of accomplishments means it’s very likely we take a dip (or a dive) when he leaves. That’s not Cal worship, it’s the law of averages. Even if you think we’ll soon rebound - and history argues that’s a reasonable assumption - we’re most likely going to have a down period. The question is, how long.
2. There’s no obvious home run hire out there. This has always been the toughest job in college basketball, and in the age of social media, it’s harder than ever. I know folks think we’re immune to it, but missing on target 1, target 2 taking a different job, target 3 deciding he doesn’t want the pressure - now you’re going downhill fast, as other candidates start to attach a stigma to the job [see the Last several Indians basketball and Tennessee football searches], that trip is not far fetched. Everyone seems to think “this is Kentucky, we get who we want!” But identifying and hiring the right guy is not easy, it’s hard. Not doing it doesnt mean your AD is a dumbass.
3. Regarding that assumption that we’ll always be great in college basketball......things change. The world is a different place now. Nothing is guaranteed. Not long ago, Indiana and UCLA thought, justifiably, they’d always be powers, as did Nebraska, Tennessee, Florida State, Michigan, etc, etc. in football.
