Hobb's blunders

Former season-ticket holder, Long-time reader and long-absent poster but here are my 2 cents. Hobbs blundered the hire in 2015 and made matters worse by blundering the 2019 firing. By not firing Ash at the end of 2018 his only real choice was to play out 2019 where the possibility of 2-10 or 3-9 now feels almost respectable. Instead, he miscalculates and 4 weeks hence has made RU the laughingstock of college football on its150th anniversary no less. And a 7 pt dog to Liberty of all teams to boot. All his fund-raising and good hires in bball and other sports will not have earned him enough capital to survive. His margin of error is so thin that I'm not sure any candidate so far mentioned can bail him out with the exception of Greg Schiano. Joe Moorhead? Please.

Umm, virtually everything Hobbs has done with regards to the football program since last December has been a complete and total blunder.

-Not firing Ash when he had the money to do so and donors asking him to do so last season.
-Then firing him 4 games into this season, essentially turning it into a lost season where the school is giving away extra tickets to P5 opponents. (Fans can only take so many lost seasons).
-Fired McNulty. Nunzio could very easily have been interim HC with some semblance of Art's progression via McNulty as OC.
-A muffed punt of a press conference, in which he explained why he fired McNulty, something that raised eyebrows in the coaching community.
-Not having a search firm in place and bidding them out for a full two weeks after the firing was done. Sorry, this is business, he should have had his ducks in a row and could have had someone assembling a list of search firms as a pet project while Ash was still here.

These aren't rumors, it's what happened. I know some folks on here personally know the guy and share a kinship with him, but football drives everything in the P5. Lots of ADs can probably do a nice job with baseball, soccer, fundraising, etc. Really, the guy gets so much praise for that around here but as others have mentioned, no one even knows who's the AD at Texas, or LSU, or Ohio State, or Michigan. They know who the coaches are. Football drives the bus at successful programs and Hobbs has fumbled 5 times over on football already.

And as far as the GS rumor, we have multiple millionaire donors putting pressure on Hobbs on Twitter to strongly consider Greg Schiano. What does that tell you about what Hobbs knows about our football history or what made the one coach successful in our history here? It tells you he does not know much.

The only true “blunder” you list is not firing him last year; can’t nor won’t argue that one. The rest are all opinions that many don’t share with you regardless of how often you, and others, keep typing them.

The reason why he wasn't fired last year was already given, and it made sense.

Considering how this Season is going it should had been done last year, but it was NOT done to save money or anything stupid like that.

Appreciate the grammar correction.

As for my narrative if I'm wrong, I am all ears to hear a credible alternative. However, college football is a results business and the results of the last three weeks have been shocking and even shameful to Rutgers. Hobbs' job has to be - at a minimum - to not have made a bad situation that he created worse. But he did.

When I sit in that empty stadium week after week, I don't blame Ash, I blame Hobbs. It was his hire and his mistake not to fire. He saved $1M in buyout money and flushed 2019 down the toilet, tanked the 2020 recruiting class and cost the school about $7-$10M in lost revenue from football. By tripling down on Chris Ash.

It's beyond an embarrassment at this point. I am rooting for him but he might not survive.

Oh but Hobbs did such a great job making sure the 150th Celebrations are a success!

Let's also not forget his brilliant decision to cancel the UCLA series and instead play....BC!

And we had to pay the swim coach to fire her!

I haven't seen anyone claim the 150th anniversary is being handled successfully. Who's fault is that botch job?

The first blunder was last year and the second was firing ash and OC after game 4 this year . That’s two blunders. I also said back in 2015 that he blundered the hire, but that happens so if you don’t want to count that fine, but I will . I am not that smart but even I could see ash was a bad fit here.
Even though Hobbs may be to some the greatest fundraiser ever, he has bungled this . But he gets another chance, let’s see what he does.

I can’t believe how many people want Ash as HC still.

You think the board is bad now?
Imagine Ash was still HC?
How many threads would there be every week calling for AshEra to be fired?
Just like after Iowa....and BC....and Michigan......

Ash couldn’t have been fired soon enough.

But do we know if Hobbs had the green light to fire at the end of last season? Nobody seems to know that for sure. If he did not, then it is on the BOG/Barchi too.
Everybody wants someone to piss on. Hindsight is 20/20.

The guy who went 1-11 last year and 8-32 overall?

At least now we have definitive proof - Ash is gone.
No more guessing “Will Ash be fired? Why isn’t he fired yet? What will it take for Hobbs to stop screwing around and fire Ash!!??!!?”

For me, it's not that I still want Ash, it was bringing him back to essentially fire him after Iowa. It should have happened last year. Bringing a 1-11 coach back to fire him within the first month (if rumors were true the decision came after the Iowa game) is certainly a blunder.

Hobbs said decision was made on plane from Michigan. I think Hobbs sucks as far as a football AD, but I am not going to label him a liar and not on the up and up .
What are the Iowa rumors ?

Hobbs is a joke & a typical politician. Think about it, he was the Seton Hall AD lol. Christie recommended this clown & Urban convinced Hobbs to hire ASH lol. If Rutgers wasn't so cheap after some success we would not be in this predicament. Top 25 team every year if Schiano was given what he needed after 2006. Would have made us alot of money for investing in Schiano. He was tired of the political BS that runs this school & therefore left. We were really close to something special & just threw it all away. God forbid NJ has a great college football team

You can’t be the best AD ever when you are responsible for a total and complete dumpster fire with the once proud football program.

The team was 1-11 last year with blowout losses to Kansas and Buffalo and now an underdog at home to Liberty. It is so sad how far this program has fallen and he is responsible for for all of it.
