I don’t believe you could get a universal system in place for that. But I do like the foundation of that idea.
I have always believed you have to build the buyout into the player’s contract.
Offer two year contracts. And have a buyout if the player wants to leave after year one.
why would a player sign a contract like that? Because you are structuring year 2 to have an escalated value available. Maybe its guaranteed, maybe its incentive based like the NFL does. Either way you are making year 2 attractive enough where the player can stay and also not get kicked to the curb by the school. Could you end up with some “bad contracts” that way? Absolutely, but you still get some continuity, familiarity with the fans, and in year two maybe you get some unexpected improvement.
And if the kid blows up after year one his opportunity at another school should be so attractive that the new school is willing to eat the cost of the buyout anyway.
Someone at the lower level has to be creative and step outside the box. Be the trend setter with an idea like this. Why not us? (I know….Just opened Pandora’s box for all those who will tell us why it won’t be us)
