HCSF Offensive Tempo

Several days ago the Denver Post had an article that stated that Colorado's offense last year was second in the PAC-12 in offensive snaps per game (76). They intend to increase that this coming year. Anyone know what HCSF's offensive tempo was at UCF (since I'm too lazy to look it up)?

Couple things that may surprise people about this offense:

1) How much they throw
2) The pretty average number of offensive snaps they post

It was 72.4 per team rankings.com.
I've read elsewhere that the speculation of what kept it from being higher was they blew out a bunch of teams, and the backups were in a lot, but the backups weren't able to go quite as fast as the starters.

Probably be a couple years before Frost has this problem in Lincoln.

My mistake. They only played 13 games because they had the one cancelled.

According to cfbstats.com

924 offensive plays in 13 games. 71 plays per game.

If you score touchdowns, then this number changes.........

If you play a team that runs 85% of the time and you can't stop them, then this number changes.

More snaps, doesn't always correlate into being ranked in the top 25, as Colorado has shown!

Score more points than 30, hold them to less than 20! Those are the average numbers that I wanna see.

It will change throughput the game for us, they won't come out of the gates going lightning fast week 1. There will be pre installed tempos but will likely at first be determined by how much the team can handle mentally and physically.

Central Florida was 58th with 72.4 offensive plays per game. It is a bit of a misconception that Frost's offense is all go, all the time. Yes, they can and do run tempo at times, but for the most part, they like to control the clock also. There are other factors that can skew these numbers too. Big plays on offense is one. If a team is scoring on a lot of big plays, that will keep their number down. If you have a bunch of 4 play, 80 yard drives, you won't run a ton of plays. Or if the other team tries to play "keep away" from your powerful offense, then it may affect the number of plays.

They line up quick, but they utilize alot of pre-snap motions and check with me's, so they were actually middle of the pack in terms of how quick they actually snap the ball.

Not as many as most people think...though I do think the fact they won some games big cut down on the numbers they would normally post.

Frost says they go fast- BUT he's not an idiot
He manages the clock and game- based on game situations and even wind
Unlike the past coaching staff- Frost DOES know that an incomplete pass stops the clock

When they have the wind Frost will go fast- go get more possessions when they have the wind in their favor. Against the wind- slows it down- so other team has less time with wind in their favor.

They can go fast when they choose to- they have a middle and slow down speed as well

In 2016 they averaged 76 snaps and 38th place record- 6-6
In 2017 72 snaps and 58th place record 13-0

This isnt just Oregon tempo tempo tempo stuff
They have pre snap reads- check with me- post snap reads etc
They also like to shift and motion- Frost plays a lot of games with formationing and motions/shifts so he can see how the defense is playing him
He has a full complement of key breakers and this guy sees the field really well

I don't know the number of explosive plays for TDs or over a certain yardage but it seemed to me that UCF had quite a few of those last year. That will also take your number of snaps down. It's a tough stat to gauge anything from because there are just to many factors? How good is your defense? If they are getting teams off the field at a higher rate than your offense will run more plays. How many turnovers did your defense create per game? What was your average yards per play? Too many things to look at.... Obviously a team can be uptempo and create a few more opportunities for themselves but there are also other factors. I think Frost and Company will handle game situations way better than we are used to from previous staffs.

Frosts running game will surprise people
At Oregon - Passing Yards to Running Yards:
.66 and 1.3
440 and 538 total yards respectively

At UCF it was 1.5 and 1.6 Passing Yards to Rushing Yards only 341 ypg year 1, and 533 in year 2

Rileys historic average was 2.5 passing yards to running yards- which of course he did as usual in year 3 with his QB and his system in place

So expect to see a lot more rushing yards than we have in the past- especially in year 2. And it will be more than just the 2 running plays- Inside Zone and Outside Zone with an occasional Jet Sweep for little gain
MUCH more sophisticated Running Game with the Frost Offense. We will see a team that WANTS to and is COMMITTED to running the ball- instead of the lies we were told about running the ball by the riley gang.
