Both teams are pretenders on the big stage. Both would get blown out by decent P5 teams.

Just my opinion, but I have to respectfully disagree with you. The AAC is a very good conference this year.

If you are using our competitive games against both these teams as a drag to their success, I think thats an unfair assessment to all 3 teams.

We should have beaten all three ranked teams, and we suck mightily. You decide

it’s completely fair. We had smu down 30-9. Lol. And the Memphis kick? Most high schoolers make that. Those games certainly aren’t a ringing endorsement of their dominance

We are an enigma because of coaching, not talent. Against the top 5 they are not even close. Against 8-12, they would be competitive on a good night.

I have said before ECU has a very good coach. They will get better quick. Like us they have talent but unlike us they have a solid HC. I hope we get a Proven FCS contending coach for next year.

I think the top of the AAC is solid, but I don’t think we have actually played one of the 25 best teams in the country this year. SMU, Memphis, Cincinnati are all average. Michigan state would beat all 3 and they aren’t a top 40 team. That’s the depressing thing to me

I am not sure. There are definitely 5-10 programs in the country that would be difficult for others to beat but when Illinois beats Wisconsin and KSU beats OU then it indicates to me that on any given day.... After that first group there is quite about of parity among the next 30.

I understand that. But the only game that I saw us physically manhandled and abused was against MSU. And MSU has gone on to be outmanned by every decent team on their schedule. I think SMU is without a doubt a fraud. And I haven’t been overly impressed with anyone in our conference this year. It has felt like a down year in college football in general for me. Not sure why

Coming into today’s game, Sagarin had us with the 11th toughest schedule in the country. I’m sure that’s the highest in many, many years. Memphis beat Mississippi, SMU beat TCU, Wyoming beat Missouri, Cincinnati beat UCLA, San Jose beat Arkansas, etc. All 6 of our losses before today were against teams ranked 38th or higher. The AAC West is ranked higher than both divisions of the ACC. Today’s loss to #54 Tulane was our weakest loss of the year. Our conference has stepped up their game, we need to do the same.

Thanks for that info. Interesting. It’s encouraging that we are not too far away from being successful at a higher level than ever.

I’m sorry but I call Houston on all that. With little effort you can also cite to losses or too close wins to clearly inferior teams/conferences. I understand the temptation to contort the mind and the arguments to allow oneself to believe your team isn’t really as bad as it truly is, but don’t be fooled. Who cares what other people are doing or how close the loss was. Look at the program and ask yourself if it’s going to get better and what tangible improvements have been made. The fact is we keep losing close and the coaching staff’s response is nearly always a monotone “Not my fault. Keep doing exactly what we’ve been doing.” Somewhere around the 30th loss you need someone we to put you over the goal line not tell you that you are just as good for getting tackled at the one and we will score next time.

I’m not ignorant of our situation. I’m very aware of where we are at. But even with our current talent, with our current coaching staff, we should have beaten two, and maybe three, ranked teams. Our cupboard is not as bare as it has been in times past. We have some talent and some depth, compared to the Rader days or the Burns days. I get we need improvement, and a lot of it.

I have never been a fan of this hire, just like you. Even our 10-win season, I wasn’t a fan of this coach, it just didn’t feel like a fit with the type of talent and style of play we have traditionally won with.

I get that you’re cranky today; we all are. Go argue with someone else.
