That's the crux of why he looks so bad in retrospect.

A coach who demanded absolute loyalty and discipline who has basically proven to have none of either.

Woody Hayes, who was clearly a huge influence on Knight, at least had the dignity to realize that he had placed his employer in an untenable position, and accepted the blame for how his career ended. Knight, OTOH, has spent 20 years metaphorically throwing up 1 finger salutes to anyone who dares criticize him, while also finding all kinds of petty reasons get in spats with a lot of people who helped him succeed.

Knight was horrible and never could stand him. I'd also give a vote to Dean Smith as I never could stand his stall ball tactics and, after all, he did usher in the cheating at UNC that they still get away with. Don't know that he treated others like scum as Knight did though.

I don’t know about Dean Smith ushering in cheating at UNC. Remember Dean was an assistant coach under Frank McGuire who became known for his setting up his “Underground Railroad” from New York City to Chapel Hill using shady recruiting tactics.

After McGuire left UNC said they wanted to clean up the program but instead of actually cleaning house they hired Smith, who again was part of McGuire’s staff. (Only at Carolina would they have the audacity to hire the assistant and then claim that everything was cleaned up.)

And of course Smith continued using the pipeline to New York for many of his recruits over the years. Smith may have been the architect of UNC relying on fake classes but it appears cheating at the school was probably already going on when he first got there.

There's a difference between a coach you don't like for perceived cheating or because they win at a high clip. It's another when a coach is caught choking a player. Cheating is nothing compared to physically assaulting a player or covering up a murder. Those are actual series acts.

Yep. Cheating is low and detestable, but at least you're trying to win. Physically and verbally assaulting players and people is a whole different level of wrong and makes you a POS coach and person.

His style of leadership wasn’t really that uncommon in yesteryears. Times have changed, he didn’t, but I’m not sure it wasn’t better before. I’d guarantee guys like Rupp had a pretty firm grip on their operations and kids walked a fine line too.

The difference is, Knight got busted on tape physically hitting players (right about when times were changing). IU gave him a slap on the wrist and a last chance, and Knight was too stubborn to change. I agree with the hard line mentality, to a certain point. But Knight ultimately leaped over that line, and was really just a POS individual. His legacy became his shortcomings as a person, not his achievements as a coach and leader.

I'm just curious, did this "great American" ever return to Puerto Rico to serve his six-month jail sentence for assaulting a police officer? Did he ever apologize to that guy he got into a fight with at a restaurant, or the assistant coach he kicked out of a chair and then fired, or the guy he stuffed into a trash can, or the Indiana employee that he punched out, or the secretary he launched a vase at, or all of the other countless people he assaulted over the years? What about all of the players he bullied and beat up on (especially the ones whose crotches he'd infamously grab and squeeze)?

Well surely he apologized for beating up his own son on a hunting trip, right? Pat's lucky, I guess, that Coach Knight only broke his nose and messed up his shoulder instead of shooting him in the back, like he did one of his former friends. I know that Coach Knight got hit with a lawsuit over that shooting, but were charges ever filed over him lying to the police over that incident? I wonder if it was the same shotgun that Dakich said that Knight would bring to practice after his players stood up to him.

Here's what Knight said on the court after the game, after he flipped off the crowd while his players were carrying him:

"**** 'em. **** 'em all. I'll tell you what. Their basketball is a hell of a lot easier to beat than their court system. The only ****ing thing they know how to do is grow bananas."

Then he raised his middle finger into the air when the Star-Spangled Banner was being played and continued to rant and insult Puerto Rico for almost half an hour.

Do you know how many other coaches that debacle would've happened to? None.
