I've been a Heck guy from the start bc our best teams have had a guy more like him than Hank at qb. Banks, Tate, CJ were all a bit more high risk high reward types and that's what we need to win games when we don't have a dominant defense with NFL talent at all levels.

Who would have guessed? The one time I don't qualify my statement, someone will jump at it. You guys are so predictable.

Yes, absent of morality, citizenship, etc issues within the program, the role of the fan is to support. You really got me on that one.

Of course support Lickliter. That's actually what made me join this site, shortly after Fran was hired. I had read the board, but never posted, for many years before that.

But I was so upset about fans having abandoned Lickliter, that I didn't want to see it happen with Fran.

So I started posting, in attempts to reunite Hawk fans.

Clearly, I had no idea what I was in for.

Was too young to remember the last of the Commings years. But again, absent any moral type issues, I don't see why Hawk fans wouldn't have supported their team. Wouldn't it be a fan's instinct to root even harder for their team when they know it's needed?

And just because you don't seem to understand what the very simple role of the fan is, does not mean you need to accuse me of worshipping anything.

Was it worship when I called out KF, after the Michigan game, for playing TB while he was obviously hurt?
LOL. Eyes - telling fans how to be fans since 2010.

Just remember boys it was a few short years ago we had ZERO ability at the QB position with Deacon Hill, Petras, Labas, Cade, Padilla, etc...now we have TWO capable QB's and yes, I fully believe you ride Heck now....he has a different mojo and vibe and TBH more of the playbook is open for Lester, that cannot be understated. I knew injecting him into the lineup last week was gonna jumpstart us a bit and the OL was pissed after two subpar weeks albeit vs. very tough DL's.

Kirk normally puts out these QB fires in the media yet unprompted I heard twice mention Heck has had very good weeks of practice, fired up the team plus is taking care of the ball, etc, etc. That tells me he is gonna maybe ride this QB and we know he hates Fleck and wants that pig...

Tell me this - The conversation about Iowa having two capable QB's is the hottest topic for fans right now. It is not the fans' fault that that is the case. So, how exactly are fans allowed to discuss this without "contributing to a qb controversy?" You make it sound like no one should mention the word "QB" so that the team isn't disturbed. Since you're an ideal fan, I look forward to your answer.
That's hilarious that you think fan discourse is some sort of priority.

This is beyond simple, so pay attention. The priority of the fan is to act in the best interest of the team.

If everyone really believes Iowa has two capable QBs, then it shouldn't be a hot topic at all. Why would anyone even care? It would sound like reason to be happy with either qb playing.

Be we know darn well it's not that innocent. We know darn well that a lot of people are going to behave like little bitches if Brown starts again. We know darn well that people will have their axes to grind and narratives to "uphold".

Was Padilla just discourse? No. That got heated really quickly. And fans got way out of line.

If fans must have some degree of discourse, so be it. But I would expect fans to have a pulse on the situation. If people start to get heated about it, don't stoke the fire.

And even better yet, remind fans to support the team, no matter who plays. And to not litter Hawkeye nation with negativity.

That's where I would expect reasonable discourse to lead to. And that's what happened, as a preventative, in this discussion. So now, my expectation is for people to be reasonable and listen.

Coaches tell us all the time that the community is part of the team. Just act like it; and what to do, and what not to do, will become very clear

Hank has gotten rid of the ball faster in every game they’ve both played. He’s also been more accurate through the season so what’s your point? Hank would have put up the exact same performance against that team.

It’s pretty obvious you’ve made your decision and you won’t accept any response that isn’t in agreement with you so I guess I’ll drop it.
Okay let’s be real, Heck didn’t get a fare shake. Hank always got the scripted plays. Heck got put out there with backups. I love Kirk, but I knew after his Kid’s day comments that Heck was not his pony. Hanks style of play will continually get you 8 man fronts. Heck pushes it down field. Washington never did sneak the safeties down into the box. Hank is a great team player and leader, but his field recognition and confidence makes him take the safe check down to often.

Three TDs to three guys that didn't have anyone within 10 yds of them. Boy he REALLY had to zip those in there under pressure didn't he. It was a function of the plays called by Lester, and pounding them in the run game AND WAshingtons DB's were crap. I'm fine with Heck, but your pure nonsense that there's ANY correlation to the way the TEAM played against OSU, (and a 10x better defense) then what we saw last night

Ok, Mrs. Brown we get it😉

Wow. Come up with that all on your own did you. If you actually have something worth saying, why don't you address what I said. Did Heck face the same issues on Friday as Brown did the last two weeks against two top ten defenses? Does the play action pass work better when we are running the ball so effectively? Any substance to add on your part, or just more nonsense?

I could answer all your questions, but you are blind. I just want to pet your dog.

If you really want an answer, watch film. Hank has struggled with ball placement and confidence in down field throws. Watch ever throw from every game.

Lolol.. Of course you didn't answer anything I said. Did Heck play against OSU or Michigans defense? When the game mattered. And its your stance that it doesn't matter if he did or not? Like if he had more pressure he would have been just as effective as he was against Washington where he had ZERO pressure and an effective run game? Maybe he would, and maybe he wouldn't. Your right, those things don't matter at all. I've never said that i'd have a problem with Heck going forward as the starter. Its the posters on here who think they've played under the same conditions. Here's the one thing that irks people. YOU don't get to decide. The guys who get paid to coach the team do, and I think they know way more then the internet posters do. Take it up with them.

Lololol.. I'm sorry when did Heck have to make any throw under pressure against Washington where he had to make a game winner as the clock was running out? Did we watch a different game? Heck played great, and i've said that numerous times. He also had almost ZERO pressure, and a BIG lead early because we ran the ball down their throats most of the game. How is that the same situation?

I've never heard of a qb competition that went into the season, not being a fair competition.

Scripted plays aren't any better than any other play. They are used 1st so the offense can see how the defense aligns against them. So if anything, Heck had the advantage of that information once he went in.

That's interesting that you knew after kids day. Because it was clear by everyone's comments that nobody knew at that time.

If Heck's not KF's style of pony, then how did he get on the team?

Hank's style of play will bring 8 man fronts? That's interesting. Because Michigan didn't load the box much.

Washington will continue to not sneak safties into the box, because that's not how they play D. They use a passive, 3 safety umbrella look.

And you must be at all the games to be able to comment on action taking place in the defensive backfield, that doesn't fit on the TV screen.

And how you've commented on Hank's confidence, I have no idea. It must have come from the same place that caused you to get every other thing in your post wrong.

Actually having a clue helps.

Support the team no matter who plays qb. This team doesn't need any part of a qb controversy amongst the fans and media

Lord, you and the HIVE-MIND crowd have all agreed on which hill you're gonna die on.

"3-3 Washington sucks and Hank would've put up 41 points on that joke of a team"

Iowa State is 3-3 and Hank put up a whopping 16 points, and ISU will likely finish with the same record as Washington.

So ... no. Hank had his chance to bury a 3-3 team and didn't do it. And your nanny-personality attacks are likely the product of losing debates in the real world.

And your one of those fricken clowns who makes ridiculous assumptions and cast aspersions about people you know absolutely nothing about. Do be you though, because that comes off as someone who's WAY more mature. By the way did Hank "put up 16 points" against ISU or did the TEAM struggle to run the ball thus limiting the play action game and Lesters option in play calling? Pretty big difference from what we saw on Friday night when we ran the ball effectively, (which did not happen against ISU) and opened up the field to play action. Or is Hank also responsible for our inability to run the ball in the other 3 games against P4 teams? Maybe i'm confused, or is football a team game?

I'll be the first to say, I don't care how we get the win, as long as we win. However, QB play does affect the run game. It is multifaceted given line play, rb ability, play calling, and QB sells. It is obvious when the pass game is no threat, your only option is to run the ball. Iowa does not need a game manager at this point, as the defense isn't what it has been. They need someone willing to take shots. If you go back and watch those games, you will see open WRs, same with Ohio State. Brown should have been pulled at half in that OSU game, and I will stand by that.

And once again I already said that Heck played well enough to earn the next start. the only thing I said was he also had ZERO pressure in the Washington game, and its pretty hard to balance that against what we saw in the previous two games. One can say he would have been the difference in the OSU game and maybe he would have struggled against pressure in that game as well. We don't know at this point. What's obvious is that there are a number of people who have wanted Heck to start since the spring game, and are going to ride or die with their belief. I just don't think it's as clear cut as that, but anyone who doesn't fall in line with the vocal minority needs to be shouted down or insulted for a differing opinions here.

I re- watched the Washington game and focused on Hecks performance.

1. Very accurate on passes...off target only once

2. Quick release....combined with decisiveness and accuracy..lethal.
3. Quick, nimble feet....on the 2nd td pass to vonnahme he had to elude the d-end to get clear on the roll-out....hank might not be quick enough to get there.

I just think the whole offense operated at a higher pace, crisper and quicker that under hank.

Heck plays like a kid who threw 50 td passes his senior year leading his large school team to state title and was georgia player of year.
Heck was born to play qb,like his dad( Bowling Green) and uncle( illinois).
It's in his blood.

Going back to that OSU game, Brown had plenty of time in the pocket early in that game. I get the nerves component, but the strip sack was on him, get rid of the ball. Even the sack at the end of the first quarter was a coverage sack.

This is stupid. Heck started out 2-6, then finished 12-13. Honestly, the TD passes were to wide open receivers. I can see why Kirk is still trying to figure who's better. KM running for 200+ plus yards had a huge hand in the win, also.
I was rewatching the game a bit last night. With 4:40 left in the first quarter, Heck threw an incomplete pass to Diaz, which put him at 2-7 for the game. And we punted. If I'm being honest, I was probably forming an opinion about Heck's overall ability at that point, as these results pretty much mirrored what we saw in the NIU and UNI games.

For what it's worth, the next play from scrimmage was Moulton's 56-yard touchdown run. That gave us the 13-0 lead, and perhaps more than anything, changed the game.

From that point on, Heck did not throw another incomplete pass. With 12 straight completions, he finished the day 14-19, topping 200 yards and throwing three touchdown passes.

Look back on my posting history, and you will see I've been a pretty strong supporter of Brown. I am even one of only a handful of people to have voted for Brown in the poll at the top of this thread (though I have also admitted I did so partially just to mess with the fanboys who have been blindly all-in on Heck from day one). I am still a big supporter of Hank, but if I'm picking our starter right now, I think I'm going with Heck.

The way I've come to look at it is this: Despite the slow start Friday night, Heck put together what has been the best performance by a Hawkeye QB all season. Yes, it was against a team that probably isn't very good. And yes, some of his receivers were wide open. But it was still an excellent performance, and as I've argued elsewhere (in defense of Brown), the results are the results. You don't get to pick and choose metrics to ignore.

Beyond the Washington game, I see two solid performances from Hank in the ISU and Michigan games, especially the winning drives in both games. He deserves credit for both performances. He also deserves credit for his play in the non-P5 games against NIU and UNI -- especially the UNI game when he didn't throw an incompletion.

But Hank also turned in what was clearly the worst performance by an Iowa quarterback this season during the tOSU game. Yes, it was against an outstanding defense. But it was still bad. And the results are the results.

Outside of the Washington game, Heck looked pretty mid in his appearances in the NIU and UNI games. Small sample size, but they still count. Then, in another small sample size, he looked great in his one late-game series against tOSU (perhaps as good a series for either QB all year). There's also the Kids Day practice, when he apparently looked sharp. Just a practice, but still part of the publicly available body of results.

So, I guess my conclusion is that Heck's best seems to be better than Hank's best, though there are good examples of both. We have also seen that Hank's worst has been worse than Heck's worst, imho. Obviously, every game is different, and context matters. So does sample size. I think we have two good QBs, and I will continue rooting for both. But for now, I think we need to keep riding the Heck train and see where it leads us.

Agree.
If hecks 1st 7 passes vs wash are analyzed:

2 completions
2 drops( rvz and ostrenga)
1 throwaway under pressure
1 to Tony was on target but Tony was clearly held on that play which kept him from being positioned to catch pass.
1 that was off target,I think.

Basically he missed one of 19 passes
Very accurate.

Yes, when the passifier game is no threat it can affect how an offense is defended.

But that has no application to this season, and is merely theoretical.

Whether operating effectively or not, when you throw the ball as often as Iowa has this season, the passifier game must be accounted for

I'd agree that the early sack and fumble was on Brown. No argument at all, as well as some of the off target throw. My ONLY comment on this has been that we have no idea what Heck would have done in THAT game against that team. I'm all for him starting against the goofs, as I think he's earned that shot. I've never said any different.

Well we do have some of an idea given that he came in and marched the hawks down the field, albeit in garbage time, but that was still most of the Ohio State first string. I don't think most on this board are insane about either QB at this point, but what we do know, is that our defense isn't capable of winning games like previous years, so that pressure will fall on the offense.

The defense isn't capable? Not so sure about that.

But if so, sounds like all the more reason the pound the rock, on offense.

We can also say pretty comfortably, that the D would have looked a little better to this point, had there been a commitment to the run on, offense

I think the D is capable as long as we aren't playing someone with OSU type skill players. Will most likely be an issue at some point IF we make the playoffs. I think it was most of OSU's starters and a few 2nds, but I think they were more sitting back and not pressuring the pocket like they did the first three Q.
